    3. Is the SSI Certificate the same as the Death Certificate or are they two sep[arate documents. Dreeny ________________________________ From: Mary D. If what you really want is some other online service from the SSA, you will find it on the following page if it exists: <http://www.ssa.gov/online/> If it's not on that page, then there is probably no way to request what you want online. -- Mary On 4/17/2011 1:25 PM, Rdpiet@aol.com wrote: > I  said  I  wanted  a  SS  death  record  not  the  SS 5  (application) > direct  from  the  SSA. > > ***************************************************************** ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NYC-ROOTS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Dreeny, Generally when people request a genealogically-oriented item related to Social Security, they are requesting a copy of the SS-5, which is the application that the person filled out in order to obtain a Social Security number. These documents can be invaluable because they provide not only the names of both parents, including the mother's maiden name, they also include a different birth name if there was one -- imagine my surprise to learn that the birth name of my husband's grandfather Irving Siegel was in fact Samuel Saminowitch. So they can also provide evidence of an earlier surname prior to a change. The SS-5 will generally also provide a street address, occupation and perhaps an employer's name. A death certificate may provide some of the same information, but then again it might not, especially if the informant does not know the information. These are two completely separate documents. To be honest, I really don't know what sort of record the other person was seeking to find that wasn't an SS-5. I have never before heard of such a thing as a "death record" being provided by the Social Security administration. Perhaps they exist, but if they do, I have no knowledge of them. -- Mary On 4/18/2011 10:30 AM, Doreen Jackson wrote: > Is the SSI Certificate the same as the Death Certificate or are they two > sep[arate documents. > > Dreeny > > > > > ________________________________ > From: Mary D.
