    1. Re: [NYC-ROOTS] Question regarding FHL microfilms and how to find a record
    2. Debbie
    3. As others have already said, it really depends on how the locality recorded the record. I know that for some of the records I've accessed there is an index either at the beginning or end of the film (Italian birth/marriage/death records). With others there is an index in a separate film altogether (i.e. NY Land Records, Probate records). Others are sorted by name, or date, or a combination of the two (i.e. NYC Marriage Index). Still others by date, locality and certificate number. Which Irish records were you trying to access? Perhaps we can figure out how it might work for that specific record. :) Debbie > On Oct 30, 2017, at 1:24 AM, Gail Schinnerer Jorgensen <gailjmom@gmail.com> wrote: > > This question is not specific to either of these groups but I thought > perhaps someone here in my be able to answer my question or give me a > suggestion as far as where to go for an answer. > > When searching familysearch.org and a record lists the microfilm number > that the record was transcribed from, is there a way to figure out how to > narrow things down to find the record that the transcription comes from? > > For example I have a film for the quarterly returns of births in Ireland > and the microfilm number - 101148 was given. 3. It would depend on how the municipality recorded them at the time. Each locality, country, year could be different. For example Germany was very organized very early — being German! Try to find if there’s an Index for that film. Or just enjoy scrolling! 1. [NYC-ROOTS] Question regarding FHL microfilms and how to find a record
    2. Gail Schinnerer Jorgensen
    3. This question is not specific to either of these groups but I thought perhaps someone here in my be able to answer my question or give me a suggestion as far as where to go for an answer. When searching familysearch.org and a record lists the microfilm number that the record was transcribed from, is there a way to figure out how to narrow things down to find the record that the transcription comes from? For example I have a film for the quarterly returns of births in Ireland and the microfilm number - 101148 was given. I was in my local family history Library and pulled up the film the other day. There were 559 images on that microfilm and because I was in their local library I was able to see each image. I could not however figure out how things were organized so that I did not have to individually look at every single page. So basically my question is - is there a way to be able to narrow down which image range Irish records are organized or does anyone know who I could write you or call to get the answer? Finding an image when there is a certificate number or other definitive way of narrowing things down I know how to do. It's the Irish records that I'm having an issue with. I have been searching but so far no luck. I wrote to archives@elca.org, which is an email address for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to see what they would say and I am waiting for a reply. I would not think that I am the first to seek out Lutheran records. There are some (multiple) church films available through familysearch but none that hit the nail on the head so I think I may have to go to my local FHC and read through (one by one) any that fit the year I am searching, 1863. 1. [NYC-ROOTS] NY Archdiocese records being digitized now
    2. VLB
    3. FindMyPast is digitizing all the records for the archdioceses of New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore.  Some Philly records are already online on their site. They include images--I got one from Philly.  No NY online yet.  The downside is that this is a pay site but they have to get their money back--very expensive project. I too always ask for photocopies. It's hard as the books are large and fragile but so far, so good.Virginia From: Jeanne Torre <jtorre@prodigy.net> Barb, It would be so lovely if the RC churches would scan their records and make them available since guessing at the parish can be a long shot and some churches just don't reply.  I'm still seeking another of my Irish lines -- have drawn a blank at the 8-10 churches I contacted for their children and their marriage.  Ah well, it wouldn't be fun if it was easy!
