Virginia These are the two I found in New York about the right age. I don't have a definite date for John, just going on what is written on the headstone and his age on the Scottish census. One aged 19 living in New York > Westchester > Mount Pleasant - day labourer. The other aged 18 in New York Ward 6, District 4, New York - a clerk - he was in New York Prison according to what is written along the side of the schedule. 2. Hi Sharon, Since you've been at this for 20 years, perhaps one of your facts is incorrect. What is your source for the death date of your John GORDON in New York City in 1862. When handwritten in cursive the number "2" can be mis-transcribed to "5" Sharon, since you are new to researching in the USA, today NYC is comprised of 5 counties, but in 1862-1865 it was predominantly one, New York County. However, Kings County aka Brooklyn, which is today part of NY City, was a separate city then. Here are the results of Family Search where I entered John's name, no birth date or place, Brooklyn as place of death in range 1861 -1865. . https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=75&query=%2Bgivenname%3AJohn~%20%2Bsurname%3AGordon~%20%2Bdeath_place%3Abrooklyn%20%2Bdeath_year%3A1861-1865~ -----Original Message----- From: Sharon Jameson <sharemslie@iinet.net.au> JOHN GORDON d 1862 Born in Aberdeen Scotland abt 1841-43. 3. If he died in New York City, you can look on Family Search for free. There were no death certs in 1862 but there were death records kept in ledger books. FS has brief summaries of each of these ledger book death records.  Don't forget wildcard spellings such as 'G*rd*n'.  In a quick look, I did not see him in 1862 but it's worth checking a few years each side.  You can also search the 1860 US census for free on Family Search.  It's a common name unfortunately, but you do have some info so worth looking.  If you have an international Ancestry membership, you can search there too tho not for the death. Good luck. Phone and ask them the grave location, as if you are planning to visit there. -----Original Message----- From: Gail Schinnerer Jorgensen <gailjmom@gmail.com> I would call the cemeteries and ask. Most of the time they will give that information over the phone. 2. Transcriptions are open to errors. -----Original Message----- From: Lisa Thompson <pupsnpaper@gmail.com> Has anyone else ran into this situation? According to the Familysearch transcription of the death record for my great-grandfather, William LEBRIGHT, he was buried at Mt Olivet Cemetery. (The family lived in Maspeth, Queens at the time of William's death.) While doing some research tonight, I found a BillionGraves record that indicates William and his wife, Louisa, are buried in Calvary Cemetery. Is it possible that they are buried at Mt Olivet but the headstone at Calvary is just a memorial? A few things to note: The Calvary headstone lists William, Louisa and their grandson, Walter (and no one else). this seems odd to me.William died in 1940, Louisa in 1943 and Walter in 1942, so it was probably erected after Louisa died in 1943. The Famillysearch record for his wife, my great grandmother Louisa Murray LEBRIGHT, does not specify a place of burial. Calvary is a Catholic cematary. The "original" religion of my German LEBRECHT/LEBRIGHTs isn't clear , but Louisa most definitely not Catholic. She was born in England and followed the Episcopalian religion in America. I do not have a copy of the actual death certificate for William, but it seems odd that the cemetery name would be transcribed incorrectly. Any insight appreciated. Lisa
