    3. Hi Anne, Some additional questions for you. In the 1830's, was it typical for people in NYC to be buried near (or the nearest) cemetery to their home? What's the benefit of knowing the sexton's name? I sent an email to both the Cypress Hills and Greenwood cemeteries. Hopefully they'll be able to tell me something. I will call the Metropolitan-Duane Methodist church tomorrow. Thanks Angela On Jun 27, 2010, at 1:00 PM, Anne W. 1. [NYC-ROOTS] Look up for Heine
    2. Elizabeth Martinez-Gibson
    3. Hi Everyone, One more look up from sks? I may have a lead on my Heine family. My greatgrandfather was Frederick Heine and the census record (the only one I found for him was 1900) indicates that he arrived from Germany to the US in 1881. In the Castle Garden browser, I found a Heine family that came in in 1881. It seems the father was named Gottlieb, the mother Marie and several children (Friedrich-11, Gottlieb-8, Marie-7, Albert-2 and Robert 6m). I am trying to find out info about my Frederick Heine between his arrival in 1881 and prior to 1900. I also lose track of him after 1900. Since Frederick's son, John (my grandfather) was born in Rocky Point, L.I. and they are there in the 1900 census, I searched a directory at the Suffolk Cty Historical Society and found a Fred'rk Heine listed as a farmer. Since the family I found in castle Garden records is listed as farmers, I am trying to see if there is a connection. Since there is no 1890 census and they came to the US in 1881, this leaves me with little to search. By 1900 census, as I said, Friedrich (listed as Frederick Heine) is married (perhaps a 2nd or 3rd time). I haven't been able to find a Gottlieb Heine, but I did find a tree Marie Heine in connection with Friedrich, but no one else. If anyone has suggestions or would look up this family, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Liz _________________________________________________________________ The New Busy think 9 to 5 is a cute idea. 1. [NYC-ROOTS] Look Up for Dewar
    2. Elizabeth Martinez-Gibson
    3. Hi Everyone. I was hoping someone might be able to do a look up for me? I am stll looking for John Benjamin Dewar. I have him in the 1900-1930 census. I also have his marriage certificate and death certificate. The problem is that the info on the marriage certificate and the info on the death certificate for his parents and place of birth are different. On his marriage certificate he is listed as having been born in Vermont and his parents are listed as Constantin Dewar and Margret Bird. On his death certificate he is listed as being born in California on March 15, 1868 and his parents are listed as Edwin Dewar and Margret Hendrickson (both born in the US). All of the census records (1900-1930) where I have found him, indicate he was born in CA. On one of the census, he is listed as Benjamin Dewar. I know that the marriage certificate and death certificate are my John Benjamin Dewar because his wife's info (Ann Eliza Dayton) is consistent. Since Ann and John benjamin had a son, John E. Dewar, I am assuming that John Benjamin's father was probably Edwin. My problem is that I have not been able to find John Benjamin prior to his marriage to Ann Eliza Dayton. Would sks look up John Benjamin Dewar born March 15, 1868 (that's the date on his death certificate and the only date I have at this point)? I was hoping to find him in 1870 and/or 1880 census. I don't know when he came to NY, but I know he was there by 1892 when he married Ann Eliza; and I know he died in Glen Cove in 1933. All of their children were born in NY. They did move around between NYC, the Bronx, Queens and Long Island (possibly Brooklyn) I am trying to go back to find out who his parents were and where he was born. siblings, etc. I have been hitting a brick wall with this family. I appreciate any help on this one. Thanks, Liz _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail has tools for the New Busy. 1. Re: [NYC-ROOTS] Methodist Episcopal Cemetery?
    2. CW Marshall
    3. C. Pope is more than likely the name of the sexton, the man in charge of the cemetery, including recording burials in their records. If you can't nail down the exact cemetery name and location, this name and occupation could be a very helpful clue. Use this to try and locate him in old city directories, anything you can find after 1832 or maybe even in census returns (maybe even tax or marriage records?), anything that might list his occupation around this 1832 timeframe. If you can figure out where C. Pope lived, the odds would be pretty good that he lived close to the cemetery if not on the actual grounds so he could keep an eye on things and manage the cemetery affairs. If you find this cemetery in uptown Manhattan above where Central Park is today (especially if it's in the Harlem area) and the ME church is nearby or on the same grounds, please let us know. This might even help me too. 3. Dear Angela, Carolee Inskeep's "Graveyard Shift" lists about a dozen Methodist Episcopal churches and cemeteries on Manhatan, so it would be worth your getting the book. Many didn't have their own burial grounds and jointly used a cemetery - now long gone - that was in the block between 1st, 2nd, !st Av , and 2nd Av. After the final earthen burial ban in 1851, 15,000 M.E. burials were removed to Cypress Hills on Jamaica Ave., Brooklyn. They came from both the 1st St. cemetery and individual church yards, so you might want to try Cypress Hills. The 1829 city directory lists three Popes: a grocer, a rigger, and a carpenter. Concentrate on the carpenter, since he is Charles Pope, 216 Duane St. Carpenters made coffins, of course, so being a sexton was a fitting sideline. The 1833 Hooker and 1834 Burr maps show a Methodist church on Duane between Hudson and Greenwich. If the street numbers haven't changed much, that's right near #216. In her disussion of the Bedford St. M.E. Cem & Vaults, Carolee mentions Bedford being absorbed by another church, which you could contact if you believe Mr. Perry lived near Duane Street: Metropolitan-Duane United Methodist Church 201 West 13th Street NY NY 10011-7795 212-243-5740 Good luck with your search - Anne * * * * * * * * Anne W. 1. [NYC-ROOTS] Methodist Episcopal Cemetery?
    2. Hi Angela Munro, Many of those reinterred from cemeteries in New York City (then included only the Island of Manhattan and a few small islands in the East River) were taken to Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan Great Falls, MT & Jericho, NY </HTML>

    3. Hi Angela, >From the date you gave burials were still allowed in NYC. A law was passed (I think about 1850) that no longer allowed burials in lower Manhattan. That is when Queens became the "cemetery place." Many graves were dug up and reinterred out of the city in order to free up valuable land. There is a book you might want to try to locate. It is called "The Graveyard Shift: A Family Historian's Guide to New York City Cemeteries" by Carolee Inskeep. Possibly you can get it on Inter-Library Loan. A quick search on the Net shows a "Methodist Episcopal Cemetery" in Ridgewood Queens, and another in Flushing Queens. Maybe you can find more here.. http://longislandgenealogy.com/LIGRecords.html#QueensCounty There is also a Hauppauge Methodist Episcopal on Long Island.

    2. Have you tried Findagrave.com yet? It has a search feature that might show the cemetery or the person you are seeking. In a message dated 6/26/2010 7:52:59 P.M. 3. As long as the veteran is alive he will have to order it himself or give someone a power of attorney to do so on his behalf. That is to get the full record, through FOIA you can get a record but much will be blackened out. He is still alive. Does the person your requesting the military records for have to be deceased if its next of kin applying for them? Actually my dad wants them but Im helping him out. My grandfather doesnt know were doing this. Do we need his permission if he is still alive or is it only if you order online? Thanks.
