    1. Re: [NYC-ROOTS] Social Security Applications
    2. Melanie Egan
    3. I think the problem will be that you don't have a death certificate for her. I have two grandfathers who both died in the 1940's, so are not listed on the SSDI. Earlier this year, I requested copies of their Social Security applications, without knowing their social security numbers, providing just the name, date of birth and date of death. (I assumed that both had Social Security since their widows had applied prior to the deaths of their husbands). Social Security was able to produce the application for one of the grandfathers - said they couldn't find the other. But they required a copy of the death certificate, even through my grandfather was born in 1878! So even if they find your application, they may not provide it for you without this proof that she is no longer living. 2. Do you have her date of birth and/or the marriage record to your gf ?? If u have a first name and DOB yu should be able to find her. don't know why I didn't think of this before...does anyone know if I could try to get a copy of my grandmother's Social Security application (if she had one) knowing her maiden name, dob and parent's names? She was divorced from my grandfather in 1953 and I have tried to locate her with her maiden name and the name she had when married to my grandfather in the SSDI...and no luck. I have a feeling she remarried (she was only 45 in 1953), but I have hit brickwall after brickwall and many of you have tried to help me find her through SSDI for which I am grateful. I thought if I could try to get a copy of her SS application, I might find her.

    3. Hi Everyone. I don't know why I didn't think of this before...does anyone know if I could try to get a copy of my grandmother's Social Security application (if she had one) knowing her maiden name, dob and parent's names? She was divorced from my grandfather in 1953 and I have tried to locate her with her maiden name and the name she had when married to my grandfather in the SSDI...and no luck. I have a feeling she remarried (she was only 45 in 1953), but I have hit brickwall after brickwall and many of you have tried to help me find her through SSDI for which I am grateful. 3. Hi Everyone, I think I found a possible lead...can sks do a look up for Emma Heine in the 1920 census? She was born 1887 and on the FHC site I saw an Emma Heine in Erie, NY. If possible, I am also looking for Mary Heine, who is listed on the FHC site in the NY 1905 census born in 1893 and residing in Brooklyn. I am trying to see what info might be on these census to see if these are the Heines that I haven't been able to find. 3. This weekend Turner Classic Movies [TCM] will air the silent movie "Speedy" starring Harold Lloyd. ["Speedy", Sunday, July 11, 8 pm in NYC.] I have never seen it [or heard of it] before. My interest in watching this movie now has been prompted by the promos I have seen, including "fascinating views of NYC as it looked in the late 1920's", and to paraphrase another, you're looking at people living their lives back in time. My interest in family history research goes beyond the names, events, dates and places. I am interested in my ancesters' lives, and the environments they lived in, among other things. I am sure that I have plenty of company in this respect. The time period of this movie is of particular interest to me because it was when my immigrant grandparents were raising their families in NYC. -- Maria

    1. [NYC-ROOTS] Assessing Strangers' Death Notices
    2. Assessing Strangers' Death Notices [SEE: Post of 8 July 2010 titled "DEATHS--mid Feb 1906 NYT--Pt. 1." References will be made to that sample newspaper listing of deaths. You may want to print it, and cross reference it, while you read this post.] It's efficient to eyeball alphabetized surnames in Death Notices seeking only known family surnames, and then dismiss the list when none appear. "Why should I read death notices of strangers?" you think. Final Answer: Death Notices offer clues that may advance your own genealogy! Now, let's look at yesterday's post of 20 deaths, for general observations. Isn't it amazing how many died outside of NYC? If you haven't found a death certificate for your ancestor, this is your prompt to not only "think outside of the box," but to search outside of NYC for that DC. Not all notices give as many specifics as the one for LANCE, which tells other cities that will publish the notice. If your ancestor had family living out of town, or their occupation required traveling, or they summered in the same place each year, or they died during summer vacation time, it's wise to search other locations for that missing DC. What can we surmise from deaths in the burbs, or out of state that are posted in a NYC daily, as with BELLOWS, CANNON, CLARKE, HOLBROOK and KITTREDGE? Perhaps they emanated from NYC. Perhaps their progeny or siblings resided in The Apple. Perhaps immediate family own a business or commute for daily business into NYC. Obviously, each family had a reason to post the passing of their loved one in NYC newspapers. What is it? Only documentation can resolve this question. What other facts can be gleaned from Death Notices? Church addresses in 1906. The LONGACRE notice tells us that the Madison Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church was at the corner of 60th St. and Madison Avenue in Manhattan. The MILLER notice tells that the West End Collegiate Church was located at 77th St. and West End Avenue. Since the CLARKE notice tells that the deceased died in NYC, but was buried at New Haven City Burial Ground. Perhaps this will lead a CLARKE to seek a family plot there. We learn 1906 funeral practices. Wakes and funeral services predominantly continued to be held at "the late residence" or in a family private homes, especially by non wealthy families. YES! Grandma might have laid out on the dining room table for a couple of days, while mourners engaged condolence bearers. Kind of scary to the young ones living there. 1935 was the last one of these in my NYC clan. The CLARK and WOOLVERTON funerals were held at exclusive apartment buildings of the day. The LAIGHTON death notice reflects more about funeral traditions of 1906, and the era. Since the 1850s burials in Manhattan proper became illegal, thus promulgating burials in Kings, Queens, Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties. "Motor cars" were not the familiar transportation of the day; horse drawn vehicles still monopolized urban transportation. Ferry service from Manhattan's East side carried funeral processions up the East River to Newtown Creek, and directly to Calvary Cemetery. Trains came into play in the 1870s, thus it was not uncommon for published death notices to include the time and location of train departures for those interested in paying tribute to the deceased, as depicted in the LAIGHTON notice. Finally, the phrase "interment at convenience of family" may remind you of Norman Bates in the movie "Psycho," but wasn't the case. Telegraphed messages conveyed death data to newspapers in 1906, and speed was the priority. Thus, funeral details may have been specified in the next edition of the newspaper, or the family was yet making arrangements. The next time you see a list of Death Notices in historical newspapers, perhaps you'll read them from the vantage of how they can assist your genealogical research. 3. Thank you for this wonderful site -----Original Message----- From: nyc-roots-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:nyc-roots-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Don Krieger Sent: Wednesday, July 07, 2010 9:13 PM To: nyc-roots@rootsweb.com Subject: [NYC-ROOTS] The Address Project Hi Everyone, I have begun placing complete Census reels up on the site for a bunch of cities: Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Baltimore, Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cincinatti, Cleveland, Newark. The reels from 1900 are almost complete and those from 1910 are about 1/2 done. I have two machines running 24/7 doing the work. I plan to do 1900 through 1930 for these cities and to then go back and add the other major cities: Denver, LA, St. Louis, Chicago, etc. I also have created a tool which allows anyone to add information to the searchable index for each reel. The idea is to use this to enter the address ranges and street names for every page. This will allow someone who has an address to find the census page corresponding to that address quickly. The best that exists right now is the Enumeration District <--> Street Name index at stevemorse.org . Here we will have an index which you can search on an street name. The results will show a list of pages matching the street name with the address range shown for each page. You will then pick the page you want to view, click on the link to view the page. The key is to have access to the Census page images, a tool which enables entering the information, and lots of people who are interested in helping. You can find it at http://census.evendon.com . I've placed a choice in the SEARCH selection menu to search all reels for a state. That will make the searches much faster, but we must enter the information in the index first. Each Census page now includes a link entitled: "The Address Project: Add/Edit the Index." Clicking on this loads the tool into the upper right frame. There you can enter the address range and street name, e.g.: 245 285 Palmetto Street Or you make multiple entries if the page covers more than one street, e.g. 245 285 Palmetto Street 1010 1015 Howell Avenue Of course try to be accurate but don't worry about making spelling or other errors. It only takes a moment to load a page and enter the information and the potential value of the effort to all of us and so many others is quite large. This is a way of creating address directories from the census. I'm hoping that many of us will be interested in the project, will participate, and will provide good criticism and ideas for moving it forward. Please let me know what you think, either on the list or via email. 1. [NYC-ROOTS] The Address Project
    2. Don Krieger
    3. Hi Everyone, I have begun placing complete Census reels up on the site for a bunch of cities: Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Baltimore, Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cincinatti, Cleveland, Newark. Don Krieger Pittsburgh, PA http://DonsList.Net http://www.evendon.com akadonnew __AT__ verizon.net Everything on the site is free and permanent. Loading is very fast. Each page includes a highlighted copy/paste link which you can use for easy online citation. Please support us by letting others know about our site
