Hi Jane, In midtown (the area between 14th Street and 59th Street) the street numbers begin east and west of Fifth Avenue. Street addresses west of Fifth Avenue are spaced 100 numbers apart between avenues; addresses east of Fifth Avenue are divided by 50 numbers between avenues, until Third Avenue when 100 numbers separate each block. Street addresses with odd numbers are always located on the north side of the street; even numbers are on the south side. Now, the Manhattan Address Locator: Crosstown Address Chart. Im happy to tell you that there is no Bertha Hanover in the 1920 census that I could find on ancestry. There is a Bertha Hanover on the 1930 but I dont think she is yours as she is the daughter of Wolf and Sarah Hanover living in Tennessee and all were born in Poland. I did find Bertha Hanover on the SSDI born July 28, 1908 and died July 28, 2005 last residence is Elmont, Nassau, NY and SS card was issued in New jersey. Have you tried getting a copy of her SS application or looking in old newspaper archives for an obit? Good Luck. After having read over 1,000 pages of the 1850 New York City 11th Ward 1200+ pages before finding the family I was seeking, I thought that it might be possible to get some help from this list. I am now looking for that same family in the 1860 Census. The name is Andrew Heinlein and the address is 323 8th Street. Last evening I located what the various districts in the 11th Ward cover. What I don't know is where the address numbers begin - do they start at the East River and head into the city or go from the city toward the East River. If anyone can tell me, I believe I can narrow my search to just one or two districts. I will be most appreciative. Jane (mjfour@comcast.net) He is not in the 1860 Index, did not die until 1865, was listed in the 1850 as "Henbran". I was able to identify him by place of birth, age and children's names.
Hi Everyone. Many of you have heard my story in searching for my grandmother. I may have found a breakthrough, so I was hoping sks might be able to do a lookup. I am working with process of elimination. My grandmother, Bertha Eliza (nee Dewar and her married name in 1953 was Hein) born July 28, 1908 in the Bronx. She divorced John F. Hein in FL in 1953 and no one has heard from her since. When one of her sons died in 1977, the other son tried to find her (even hired some private investigator in FL) without success. I have spent a number of years trying to find her too. Anyway...yesterday on GenealogyBank (somehow I got a preview search) I did an SSDI search for Bertha's born in 1908 and last place of residence in NY. Now, I don't know if that was her last place of residence (the 1953 divorce was in FL.), but she was from NY and lived in NY up until this divorce (and her entire family are NYers), so I thought I would check NY. I found a Bertha Hanover with the exact match dob (July 28, 1908) with a death date of July 28, 2005 (how ironic...she was also married to John Hein on July 28 in 1928). This was the only exact dob match in NY. Since this search has been like finding a needle in a haystack and I have tried many things, I thought I would try to find a Bertha Hanover before 1953 in NY/NJ (the SS was issued in NJ). Would sks check to see if there was a Bertha Hanover in the 1920 and 1930 census? The last address listed for Bertha Hanover on the SSDI is Floral Park, NY and the SS card was issued in NJ. If Bertha Hanover existed prior to 1953, then she would not be my grandmother. If not, this is a possible lead. I appreciate any help you can give. Thanks, Liz
I am seeking information on a Clark family who lived 4032 Jackson Heights, NY during 1960s. Arthur Clark was born 1901 and died 1966. He had a twin brother Charles Patrick Clark, attorney and lobbyist in Washington DC 1940s through 1960s. I am searching for descendants of this family who may still be living in the area. Thank you, Annie
Ancestry has manifests up to/through 1957. Does anyone know where later years can be found? Gabriele

Fully aware of the topic of the article. Seems to me that I have read on these mailing lists the "slamming" of many cemeteries nationwide. From poor record keeping to no record keeping, from no maintenance and gouging of relatives seeking info. on paid for plots and care. It goes on nationwide.Arlington is not an exception to misuse and corrupt dealing by whomever it is big or small. Thinking through this more, it is certainly worth trying, as hopefully they already have some record of the death. It may also possibly depend on the person doing the research. Melanie
