    1. [NYC-ROOTS] Visit to NYC Municipal Archives
    2. Bill Mayrose
    3. I'm thinking of making a trip to NYC - maybe next week - to spend a day at the Municipal Archives. Haven't been there in many years and hoping for some feedback from the group: 1) Any weekdays (Mon-Thu) better or worse than others - availability of readers, etc.? 2) I'll by arriving at the Port Authority Terminal around 8:00am. Best subway to take to get to the Archives? 3) I have a newspaper article from July 1897 about a Manhattan homicide in which one of my ancestors may have been involved. Would either the District Attorney Records or the Court Records at the Municipal Archives have detailed information about the incident and subsequent criminal process? Thanks in advance for answers to the above or any other information that might contribute to a successful trip. Bill - Massachusetts

    1. [NYC-ROOTS] FYI - Southside of 135th Street - Vinegar Hill
    2. First of all, I would like to thank all of you who wrote me privately and supported my adding the article on Arlington Cemetery in Washington DC to the Brooklyn and NYC lists on July 30th. I appreciated all of you telling me that you knew it was for genealogy purposes only, like every posting I send. Well, today, I was googling for something on the computer, but with never knowing where the computer will take you, I came across the following. I started reading it and it is a goldmine for surnames that might possibly pertain to you, if any of your family lived in the 135th Street area. Hey, ya never know. 3. Hi Loreen, yes TMG does not run under LINUX. I don't have any experience with this, but found the following alternatives: http://www.familienbande-genealogie.de/en/index.html http://gramps-project.org/ which you can't get to work, I understand http://genj.sourceforge.net/wiki/en/introduction http://www.phpgedview.net/de/ Maybe this helps? 3. Many thanks Walter. I will look at these. It may be that I haven't spent enough time with GRAMPS. I likely just need to take some time to explore these possibilities. My FTM is on my old laptop that is kind of dying so it would behoove me to get up to speed. I sure do like Linux. 1. [NYC-ROOTS] Many thanks for your prompt reply about your Genealogy selection
    2. Thank you very much for your suggestion about using The Master Genealogist as my Genealogy software as the ideal selection. I will contact and ask if I will have problems converting FTM Version #10 to TMG. software. I am not satisfied with FTM programs (Had progressed each time FTM introduced a new version.) My purpose was to hope the newer version would be easier and improved vs the earlier version. Thanks again "Genie helper" Jerry

    1. [NYC-ROOTS] 1860 Address
    2. Jane Fouraker
    3. My thanks to all who replied to my query regarding addresses in 1860. Though I have not yet located them, I am hopeful as I move ahead. The districts are not delineated very specifically. And, of course, there are no addresses on the Census. Special thanks to Walter Greenspan who sent the Manhattan Address Locator which I have printed and will save for future reference. Jane

    3. Only use the website that includes ssa.gov. Here is a link - the actual form you're completing is SSA-711 Internet Request. They have been responding pretty quickly if you have the SS# http://www.ssa.gov/foia/html/foia_guide.htm#Available Melanie Orlando

    3. Hi Loreen. It's $27 if you have the SSN and $29 if you don't. There's a website I found where you can fill out the info online and pay. I was hesitant because I didn't know if it was a legitimate site. I want to make sure.
