Jackie, For your #3... I looked at _www.intelius.com_ (http://www.intelius.com) and found an ALLEN BUHL, Jr. with relatives listed, Staten Island, NY, plus many more Buhl's living in the state of New York. I suggest you take a look at that site - plus take a look at _www.zabasearch.com_ (http://www.zabasearch.com) . I found a FRED BUHL on Staten Island on Zaba. You can also go to 'white pages' and check out what comes up for Staten Island. I also looked at US Public Records Index, Volume I and II on _www.ancestry.com_ (http://www.ancestry.com) and found a couple of Buhl's living on Staten Island (with many other Buhl's listed in the NYC area). For your #2, I see that MizScarlett listed the url's for Orphanages from the great Brooklyn pages for you, so try and see if you can find something there. For your #1... I sent you some of the death certificates numbers to you already, but here is the SSDI information for Anthony and Margaret again: Anthony BUHL - 42 yrs. old - 19 Nov 1921 - Cert #26326 Manhattan - FHL #2027764 Margaret BUHL - 40 yrs. old - 13 Jan 1922 - Cert #85 Richmond Co. - FHL #2200687 If you need someone to get the death certificates from 31 Chambers Street, NYC, I know someone that is dependable and reasonable. Write me off-list. I have found many other certificates also. I found a NORMAN A. BOYD in the 1930 Federal Census for Baltimore, Maryland that you might want to take a look at. It's a longshot, byt hey, you never know. 2ED, McDonogh Institute. I already sent you the 1920 Federal Census (Richmond Co.) information for Margaret and the children, with Margaret listed as married. I believe I have found her husband, Anthony, in the 1920 Federal Census (Manhattan) listed as a patient at the Manhattan State Hospital on Wards Island n Heritage Quest. Check out: 18 AD - Ed 1305 - Sheet 4A - Stamped #242, Line 13 - 6 January 1920. I also found Anthony's parents and grandparents on census records and some certificates. You never told me if you are a member of Ancestry, so if you are not, I suggest you go to your local library and spend the whole day getting all the information on Ancestry that there is. Use Heritage Quest too. Bring a lot of dimes and quarters for the copy machine as there is so much information on your family. I'm sorry I'm not related! Finding my family should be so easy! Hi Marge, Do you know you should be able to order that one from the LDS? Copies are normally $2 a piece, but when you only order one it is $4. If anyone is going to the archives anytime soon - I would love someone to check on a death certificate for me. Maggie McLaughlin, died 12 Jun 1892, Brooklyn, cert #9016. I would like to see what is on the death certificate for the family etc. Thank you SO much - I greatly appreciate it. ~~ Marge

If Norman was already in the Navy in 1930 this is still good info. If Richmond County did a 1925 scensus AND if these districts didn't change, you could search the 1925 census for your Norman. Dear Jackie, Here is a listing of orphanages and instituitions in Staten Island according to their enumeration districts in the 1930 federal census, from the Brooklyn homepage>>> http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Census/1930/1930.ED.Richmond.Orphan.html For those seeking institution listings in 1930, in various counties, see the bottom of this page, a page dedicated to orphanages and institutions>>> http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Orphan/index.html Barb NYC Researcher
Bill, In 1859 my shoemaking trio of brothers had shops on Catherine and Mott Streets, in Manhattan. In later years they had a branch on Greenwich Street. You are probably aware that the general population lived below Chambers Street until approx. the Civil War. The wealthy began moving first uptown to the 20s-40s. North of that was farmland in Manhattan 1855. As the have-nots moved north, the haves built their mansions further north in Manhattan. There is this organization you might try: _http://www.childrensaidsociety.org/_ I am told they have access to records from other orphanages in and near NYC, plus their own operations. They are pretty slow to respond to writing so a phone call would maybe get you to them sooner. Lamont, There were two orphanages on Staten Island that are possibilities, St. Michael's Orphanage and Mt. Loretto. Mt. Loretto is still open, but not as an orphanage. St. Michael has been torn down and is, I believe, a housing community. Google yields many hits. There is also _http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nyrichmo/_ (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nyrichmo/) for S.I. info. Jack Langton
I tried to respond but the email bounced. . L
Jackie, Sorry about repeating information that you have already received. I have been gone most of the summer, so I've been backed up on reading emails, and I started reading them with the most recent, so I haven't seen previous postings. I don't know what's worse in quantity... emails or most of the snail mail I get! The reason why I did so much work on the rest of the family, after not finding anything significant on Norman, is that most of the time, you need to do 'cluster' research to get closer to the person you are trying to hone in on. You never know where it will take you and what you will find by clustering. Addresses of relatives can always help in this way. Have you sent away for all of the children's birth certificates? Did you check for all orphanages on Staten Island and New York City for the 1925 census? If not, that's what I would do next. Check out Directory information on Ancestry or www.Footnote.com . For the 1930 census - I did find the son, Anthony, living with a family on Staten Island, as a boarder. Then there are Edward and Albert, living with their cousin on Staten Island. So that leaves Norman and the two young girls, Rose and Rita. So here you go with clustering again. Start looking for Rose and Rita too. There is a good chance that you will find Norman wherever the girls are. I just checked and did find a Norman A. Bahl on the 1930 census for Philadelphia, PA, 39 WD, ED 194. I believe the enumerator spelled it correctly and the transcriber saw the 'u' for an 'a.' He is listed as a US Marine in the Navy Yard. All other information is correct. Do you have this? Lamont, you may want to try a free week trial at footnote.com. They have New York City Directories there and you may find some relatives. In general, my relatives seemed to move from Lower Manhattan "uptown" on the west side by the 1850's. I encourage you to share a name. Many people on this list have access to databases and are happy to search for you. --- On Tue, 8/17/10, Lamont <Theshadow8418@verizon.net> wrote: From: Lamont <Theshadow8418@verizon.net> Subject: Re: [NYC-ROOTS] 1855 census To: nyc-roots@rootsweb.com Date: Tuesday, August 17, 2010, 5:54 PM David Thanks for your offer of help. I'm looking for some educated guesses. I'm searching the 1855 census for a shoe manufacturer; he probably lived on Duane Street in 1854. He turns up in Brooklyn in 1859 &1860. To date I have searched Manhattan Wards 1-8 plus 10 &14 without success. This fellow appears to have been successful because he kept his business in Manhattan and moved his home to Brooklyn. Does anyone have an educated guess as to where his 1855 home might have been? Checking all these films is getting expensive not to mention time consuming. I have already looked at all the Brooklyn Wards surrounding his 1859 address. I suppose I'll need to look at Manhattan Wards 13, 9, 15, 17 and 11 next. Which one should I choose first? Thanks. L
