    3. Hi Dorothy, There are sooo many books. Check out the Tenement Museum site. It's a .org and if you haven't visited the museum itself in NYC it is so incredible. It's located at 97 Orchard St on the Lower East Side, where many immigrants wound up. At least one of the families profiled there was German. They researched all the actual families who lived there, and made one apt based on the actual history of each. Not reconstructed, just tells their story, along with genuine artifacts if any were available. I was blown away. They also have a bookstore which is a GREAT place to start looking. I will try to find the site and send it, but you can Google "Tenement Museum Orchard" and I'm sure the link will pop up. Irene - feel free to write for more from me. And check out the movie Hester Street. -------------------------------------------------- From: "Dorothy Colwell" <paws6430@cox.net> Sent: Monday, August 23, 2010 10:42 PM To: <nyc-roots@rootsweb.com> Subject: [NYC-ROOTS] Book Recommendation Request > Would anyone on the list have a recommendation of a book or books, either > fiction or non-fiction, dealing with the subject of what life was like for > immigrants arriving in New York City, (or any other large city for that > matter), say between the period of 1860 thru the early 1900s. 2. My all time favorite is historical fiction titled Forever by Pete Hammil, Brooklyn's native son, NYC newspaperman, and former escort of Jackie O. It is the best condensed version of NYC's history and with a focus on immigrant life. 3. Would anyone on the list have a recommendation of a book or books, either fiction or non-fiction, dealing with the subject of what life was like for immigrants arriving in New York City, (or any other large city for that matter), say between the period of 1860 thru the early 1900s. I'm particularly interested in reading about living conditions, occupations, any discriminations encountered, etc. I recently learned that several of my female ancestors were employed as domestic servants upon their arrival from Germany, and the subject has piqued my curiosity. Thanks in advance for any recommendations. Dorothy

I would also like to find any living relatives on or near Staten Island, I have the death cert. 3. If you arrive by 10AM you should have no trouble getting a machine to work with. But I suggest you get there as close to 9AM as possible as the time Flies when you are doing research. Use http://www.stevemorse.org to print Out all the possible birth, marriage and death index items that you may need To search as this will save you hours of going through their indexes. This Way you can go right to the certificates. You also have the option of having the staff make you a copy of the vital Record for $11.00 each or just copy by hand the information you find.
