    1. Re: [NYC-ROOTS] 1842 naturalization US District Court New Haven
    2. Lilly Martin
    3. Hello, I wanted to share my experience. I found this past summer, online, from an offical website from Centre County, PA. my own ancestor's 1840 Petition for Naturalization, and his Naturalization Certificate. It stated his name, age, where he was currently living. The date he entered into USA, the Port, the name of the Ship he arrived on, his birth date and place. It did not mention parents, siblings, wife or children. It does say who he is denouncing allegiance to, for example: King George of Britain. I will caution that some information will be false, either planned, or by mistake. For example: my ancestor mis-stated the exact date he arrived on ship. But I had previously found his exact passenger record, so I knew it was wrong. I think many immigrants could not remember when they arrived in USA exactly. Or for some reason they lied a bit. I have found that most of my relatives did apply for Naturalization exactly 5 years after arriving. The Declaration of Intent to Stay in the USA, or so called "First Papers", could have been filed anywhere previously, when they first arrived in USA. 3. Lilly, I found out that the record I am looking for is in the NARA in Massachusetts. They advised me that Connecticut records of the period typically held little, if any, information. The individual I spoke with told me that their procedure was to locate Connecticut records and advise customers first. I will know in 8 days whether I should request the record or not. Almost any additional information could tell me if I have correct record. Thanks, L

If the autopsy was performed by a hospital, only the hospital has the records. If the death certificate indicates an autopsy was performed AND it bears the signature of the medical examiner then you should be able to find a report issued by the OCME. No medical examiner signature, then it was performed by the hospital. OCME reports for the years 1918 - 1946 are available by mail from the NY Municipal Archives. http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/collections/collections_coroner.shtml -- Maria

    3. Hi Kim, I am not aware of any general online database showing those 2 families in Hessen. And a database in English language is another "challenge"! Margaret Suter most likely came from Darmstadt, not Dermstadt. Although I am not familiar with Hessen research, I believe, there is neither an online database not a printed book with the data for Darmstadt. Darmstadt is a town within Hessen with a 100000+ population - see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darmstadt The German researchers typically collect and document their research data (to be published) for a single parish. There are some online data bases for Hessen: http://www.ortsfamilienbuecher.de/ Scroll down to the "Hessen" group and select one of the parishes. But there are much more printed books for the Hessen federal state: http://wiki-de.genealogy.net/Kategorie:Ortsfamilienbuch_zu_Hessen So you first need to find out, where exactly your ancestor came from and then try to get the matching book (if available). Probably your best chance to find your ancestors is to join a specific Hessen mailing list, but again, sorry, only German: http://list.genealogy.net/mm/listinfo/hessen-l Maybe this was of some help? 3. Hi Kim, I have MANY family members buried, in St Michael's Cemetery, and to find out where they are, will cost you $25.00, for each person!!! I know because I asked. I have several members that I was able to get their death date, from their death certificates & that they were buried in St. Michael's. To find out where, I would have to send $25 for each inquiry. They say they have to go down into their vault to find the info, as they do not have it on line, yet. 1. [NYC-ROOTS] how do i find a madam?
    2. Barbara Kiersh
    3. Hello all listers, I recently had a wonderful brick wall breakthrough. My new-found third cousin told me that it was believed my grandfather's sister, Hulda/Hilda Lazarus was a madam, and possibly rented out rooms to "clients". I find this extremely amusing, and would love to find out more information about her. My Lazarus family lived mostly in the Bronx and Manhattan. She came to America in 1884. At the time she came she was 13 years old, and obviously developed her business after she matured. I've looked at the Fulton History website hoping to find some newspaper article with her name, but no luck. I haven't found a death for her, but she could have married and would have had a different surname. She could also have had an alias (or two), something sexy and American sounding. Any ideas? 2. Robert Campbell
    3. As a result of following through with a witness on the 1917 marriage certificate, Walter KENT, who arrived at Ellis Island in 1916, the record shows Walter was the half/step brother of the groom Frederick Anthony Carter. Walter Kent it seems was at Queens in time to be counted in the Federal 1930 census. Details of which are below:- Walter, his wife and son are on lines 43 to 45 located at Queens, New York, 227 street, Laurelton Walter Kent (head) age 30, married,(age 20 when first married ie around 1910), born England, became a US citizen in 1916, (immigration date) occupation Policeman, he was also a veteran of the US Army or Navy during WW1. Walter's wife is shown as Mabel age 32, (married when she was 22) born in Sweden There's a son Edward F. age 8 (1922) born in Delaware. I have checked out the New York indexes and it seems the 1922 marriage did not take place within New York, the clue perhaps in Delaware where their son was born? If Walter Kent was a New York policeman in 1930 are there records of his service available? Walter states he was in the US military for WW1 so wouldn't his draft papers be available? For the marriage and birth of their son in Delaware is there another Rootsweb message list I should join and ask questions about possible records within that State? cheers Bob
