Hi Everyone. I just found this website by googling. Someone put this up for those of us reseraching. Hi Everyone, I have been reading messages from listservs about St. Joseph's Female Orphan Asylum, Bklyn, Kings Co, NY and I was wondering if anyone knew whether there was some kind of list of who might have been here in the early 1900s? I have unsuccessfully looked for family members who seem to disappear after the 1900 census. I find some of them listed in documents in 1919 and I have recently found descendants of some, so I know they did not die. They would have been between 8 and 13, in the early part of the 1900s, so they had to be somewhere. I have looked at census records for 1910 and cannot find them. My great grandfather had five children before the two he had with my great grandmother. I cannot find out what happened to their mother, my great grandmother was their stepmother and she remarried sometime after 1900 (when my grandfather was born), so something happened with the marriage (death or divorce?). I found her in the 1910 census remarried and listed with her children from ! my great grandfather (my grandfather and his sister) and two children from her new husband (born between 1904 or 1906 and 1908), but I cannot find my great grandfather nor can I find his other five children from his previous marriage. So when I saw this orphanage, I thought maybe I would try to check records. If a child was in this orphanage, would they have been listed on census records? If so, how would I go about looking for them? I have tried by their individual names without any luck. Could they be listed under the name of the orphanage? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Liz
For everyone's information: Steve Morse's uses the information that is found at the Italian Genealogy Group. All the vital record & naturalization indices found at the IGG is identical to what is found at the German Genealogy Group. What the GGG has that the IGG doesn't have, are records from German speaking churches in New York. To check it out for yourself go to the GGG and click on "Databases" to see exactly what they do have. Both are constantly having public records being added to the databases- at the same time. If u want them to look up a name and get a cert number u have to send a request using a film number that encompasses the date of death. Once u get that u can order the certificater number using another film which coontains the certificate. They dont have an index to look up names. either way u have to use request form. **************************************************************************** ************************* I myself, would do one of two things. Either I would try sending for certificate #6230, > thinking perhaps they left the "0" off the end of the number in the index, or I would > send the names and ask them to look up the record in the index and see what I got.

Thank you Bobbi. I will try that film first. I got the certificate number from Steve Morse's site so it could be a transcription error. As far as the index films are concerned, how do you do that?
