Hi Bobbi, Thank you. I will look into this before my next trip to NYC L
This question has come up before. If I remember correctly, there's a copy at the New York County Clerk's office. It was not microfilmed because of its condition, wormholes or something. Does anyone know where Ward 17 of the 1855 census can be found? Salt Lake does not have a copy! L
>From Google search try http://www.wpi.edu/academics/Depts/MilSci/Resources/saratoga.html Scroll down to where it has the units that were involved. That might work, otherwise, try a query to the New England Historic Genealogical Society at americanancestors.org As I recall, there is also a Historical Society at Saratoga, so they might know. Jean
Dan, First of all, let me congratulate you on having found an ancestor who fought in the American Revolution. Secondly, let me invite you to join the Sons of the American Revolution (the SAR). We're like the DAR, but not as large, and not as well known. The soldier Amos King was awarded a pension. His individual pension file is designated as S10954. In this pension file, it clearly states that the soldier was at Cherry Valley. The pension file offers other details of his service as well. I have downloaded a pdf file of this pension file, and would be happy to send it to you privately, i.e., off-list. There may also be a compiled service record for Amos King, but I have not had a chance to check for you. The pension file and the compiled service record are primary sources. There is a widely-used secondary source you may also wish to consult, 'New York in the Revolution as Colony and State' by James A. Roberts, first published in 1897. I'm sure there are other secondary sources that put forth rosters of men who fought at Saratoga. If you would like the pdf of the pension file, or if you wish to join the SAR, let me know. I can refer you to an SAR chapter in your area. Take care, Joseph W. I found in the wallet a packet of newspaper clippings, 2 Brooklyn Ferry passage tickets, and a letter hand written by Amos's grandson John F. King of Hillsdale, Hillsdale County, Michigan. The letter explained the significance of the wallet and told of Amos's participation in the Battle with Burgoyne at Saratoga and briefly mentions Cherry Valley. I am wondering if anyone can tell me how to prove that Amos King was present at the Battle of Saratoga? The DAR has already agreed that Amos was at Cherry Valley and the pension that he earned from that battle. Thanks Dan

To clear up the question you can do two things. 1) Document the birth. 2) Document the marriage of Sarah farmer to Isaac. The early Vedder families seem to be in Schenectady and then move slowly west. Check your maps for a sense of where they were and where they went. Sometimes this helps. From Kinship records of the First reformed Church of Glen, Montgomery County we have the birth of Jacob Sudam b. August 12, 1818 bapt. March 7, 1819, parents Isaac Vedder and Sarah farmer. From Caughnagwa Reformed Church, Fonda, NY there is a Bapt. of Elenor b. 20 Aug. bapt. 1806. The record incomplete dtr of Isaac Vedder and Sarah Farmer. theclown16

She believes Jacob's parents are Isaac Vedder and Sarah Farmer but that ISAAC's father was an Albert Vedder. No sources are listed for him, but she has a web page for Van Eps and cousins. Nothing seems to have been updated in four years, but there are contacts to try. Farther back, her sources for the Vedders are: Title: Genealogies of the First Settlers of Schenectady Name: By Jonathan Pearson Type: AUTHOR Date: BET 1873 AND 1982 Publication: Title: Genealogies of the First Settlers of the Ancient County of Albany Name: Jonathan Pearson Type: AUTHOR Date: 1870 I have both Vedders and Suydams marrying into my tree, just not together. I did not even think of that possibility that Sarah might have been a widow when she married my Vedder. Now to figure out the discrepancy in the name of the father of Jacob Suydam. I also have Van Alstyne's from New York state. Adrian
Hi Adrian, The thought occurs to me that perhaps Suydam was Sarah's maiden name. Possibly Isaac married a widow "Sarah Farmer"? Hello Adrian, If this is Germn surname, you might try spelling it VETTER, WEDDER, or WETTER. Best wishes, Barb > Jacob Suydam Vedder
Hello everyone, In case the post I just sent with names changed in the Sessions Law in the State of New York index couldn't be opened, here's the link. It was posted by a lister on the JewishGen listserv. Hope this helps someone find a missing relation. The Huntsville Daily Times published in: Huntsville, AL Date: March 30 1930 Page/Column: Page 1, Column 3 EDEL’S SENTENCE CHANGE TO LIFE OSSINNING, N. Y., March 29 (AP) – His death sentence commuted to life imprisonment today by Governor ROOSEVELT, Fred W. EDELl, alleged slayer was in the Sing Sing hospital tonight recovering from a case of nerves brought on by his ordeal of 14 months in the prison’s death house. Only the supporting arm of a keeper prevented EDEL from swooning to the floor when he was informed of the governor’s action. He was able to stammer out only a few words of appreciation. Four times had EDL been prepared to march down the corridor to the death chamber and once his doom was only fifteen minutes away when word of a reprieve rescued him. Another time he had been dressed in the black suit that condemned men wear when they die but again the preparations were halted less than an hour before the switch was to have been thrown. EDEL is alleged to have killed Mrs. Emma HARRINGTON, an actress and intimate friend who was found beaten to death in her New York apartment in December 1927. He has maintained his innocence. http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/link.php?action=detail&id=82803 SOURCE: http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/link.php?action=detail&id=82803
