    1. [NYC-ROOTS] Death Record for Manhattan, New York - 1890
    2. In 1890, NYC was the county of New York, which, at that time, included Manhattan and other small islands in the East River, as well as the western part of what today is known as the Bronx. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan Great Falls, MT & Jericho, NY </HTML>

    3. Hi Roberta, He might have lived in NYC up until his death. But his death could have been anywhere. If he worked or was visiting relatives in, Brooklyn (Kings County) , Jersey City (New Jersey), White Plains (Westchester County), or somewhere in CT, it would not show up in the NYC death record for 1890. In 1890, NYC was the county of New York (Manhattan.) Any time you have a chance to search an index, no matter how unlikely, try. That is how I found my German Gr-Grandparents married in London before returning to Germany. 2. You are saying your grandfather died in 1890 and your great grandparents married in 1881. That does not add up very well if your grandfather was about ten years old at the time of his death...Is the date your great grandparents were married a typo ?? What are the name ?? ************************************************************************ Hello List: My great grandparents were married in New York City in 1881 and my grandfather and his brother born there. According to information I have found on a 1901 census from Denmark, my grandfather died in 1890 in New York City. Have sent a request for death record info but nothing was found. Am looking for other suggestions, alternatives, etc to find info. The residence address shown on their marriage certificate was 206 9th Street, NYC. Thanks for any input that can be offered.

    3. List: Sorry for the problems with the e-mail - Have new Windows 7 computer and it is giving me fits. Will start over: Hans Wilhelm Westergaard was born in Denmark, married in New York City in 1881 and apparently died in New York City in about 1890. His wife and two sons left New York in 1894 for Kobenhavn and remained there. A later record from Denmark indicates Hans Wilhelm died in 1890 but with no location of his place of death. Believe they attended St. Marks Church as my grandfather was christened there in 1882 as well as his brother in 1885. The family returned to NYC from a visit to Denmark in 1889. This was the last actual verified record that I have found. 1. [NYC-ROOTS] Recommending Award for Brookyn Site @ One Great Family
    2. Sorry for the duplicate, I forgot to change the subject line Miz Scarlett contacted me about how to recommend a site for an award at One Great Family...luckily I had saved the email I got which had a link to recommend a site, as I don't think the form she thought was for recommendation is what we are looking for to recommend it. Here is the email address that comes up when I clicked on the email link from them to recommend a site for the One Great Family Award ogfmarketing@onegreatfamily.com I think to be effective folks probably need to write a bit more than "this site is great" LOL Anyway, if you love the site Nancy has created as much as I do, email these folks so perhaps we can get her the credit and recognition she deserves for putting such a great site together. For those who don't have the site address for Nancy's site handy, here it is http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/ And if you are researching NY, and haven't looked at this site, you really should! It has tons of NY info. Joyce

    1. [NYC-ROOTS] A link for many award winning general purpose genealogy sites
    2. http://links.onegreatfamily.com/links.asp I ran across this and thought is was a nice list to peruse...I nominated the Brooklyn Website http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/ for this award a while back, but I still don't see it :-( But I think it really deserves to be on this list. If you agree perhaps more submissions for the site to get this award will get some attention. Anyway, I have not heard of a lot of these sites before, I hope you find some on here you have not been to either. Joyce

    1. [NYC-ROOTS] New York Irish History Roundtable - THE HIGHBRIDGE IRISH - A lecture by Kate Feighery
    2. Jim Garrity
    3. On Saturday, March 26, from 2-3:30 p.m., the Roundtable will host a talk by Kate Feighery on the Irish community in the Highbridge section of the Bronx. The program will be held in the Columbia University Law School, Jerome Greene Auditorium (room 101) at 435 West 116th Street in Manhattan. A reception will follow. The nearest subway station is for the Number 1 train at 116th Street and Broadway (Columbia University). The Law School is west, across the campus. Highbridge, the neighborhood in the southwestern section of the Bronx, took its name from the massive stone bridge (spanning the Harlem River) constructed there in the 1840s to carry water to the island of Manhattan. The history of the Irish in Highbridge can be traced from the mid-nineteenth century, when homes of Irish immigrant workers building the Croton Reservoir first began to replace earlier farmlands and sprawling estates. It wasn't until a century later, however, that the true strength of Irish connections to the neighborhood reached its peak, a time when the neighborhood has been described by its former residents as made up of anywhere from seventy-five to ninety-nine percent Irish and Irish Americans . While the ethnic makeup of Highbridge has changed drastically since the late 1960s, remnants of the once-pervasive Irish community can still be found today; both in the physical sense, through the buildings and churches that stand as testaments and, more powerfully, in the memories of those individuals whose families were once a piece of this Irish community. Utilizing archival, census, and church records, as well as oral histories and memoirs of former residents of the neighborhood, Kate Feighery’s talk will focus mainly on the twentieth century Irish experience in Highbridge, and its connections to the larger Irish communities of the Bronx and other parts of New York City. Kate Feighery holds a Master's Degree in Irish and Irish American Studies from NYU's Glucksman Ireland House. She currently works as a Project Editor in the College Department at W. W. Norton & Company, while continuing to pursue her interest in the history of the Irish in New York. Attendance to this program is free, and all are welcome to come. There is a suggested donation of $3.00 to cover the cost of refreshments.
