    3. Hi Veronica, This is one of those things where the first question you need to ask yourself is do you really want to know? If so, I see 2 potential avenues of investigation. The first is obvious legal one. What are the legal steps which might have been taken and which if any would have been recorded. For instance, perhaps there might have been a coroner's hearing which would have left a public record. You could contact a criminal attorney with a New York license to ask a few questions. Or if that proved too expensive, you could contact someone teaching in one of the law schools in the state and put your questions to them. The 2nd avenue is to find out what happened to the remaining members of the household afterward. This is likely something on which you already have a start. But from this point of view I would look for signs of emotional distress, for example lots of divorces, psychiatric hospitalization or criminal activity. 3. The microfilms containing the manifests covering this period for arrivals at Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York are free online at the Internet Archive. I've created an index by date so it's easy to find the correct reel; you can find it at [1]http://Guide.DonsList.net Just click on the link for the port you want and the index by date will appear in the upper frame along with a link for each date. Scroll down the list to your date and click on the link to open the correct page on the Internet Archive for the microfilm containing manifests for that date. You can then download a pdf of the entire microfilm or use the Internet Archive's online reader to browse. The links for both are to the left side of the page. I hope this is helpful. 3. I am not sure what might be on the marriage certificate, it can vary. However, can you find him on a ship manifest at immigration? Often at the very least last residence is listed, sometimes place of birth will name the town. Also, a declaration of intent if naturalized will give birth place. Be sure to look for a WW1 draft registration, sometimes the town of birth is listed there too. May also have needed to register for WW11. 3. I am hoping that someone can help me. I am trying to find the record of a fire at my grandfathers store in Far Rockaway, NY (I am asking here because the resources for Far Rockaway, Queens would be similar in Manhattan and Brooklyn AND the Queens list is not active like both of you two are) Since the only fact that I know is that the store was operational in 1930 (1930 census has my grandfather listed as an entrepreneur. My Mom was born in 1930 and remembers hearing about the fire when she was a young girl so I am deducing that it happened between 1930-1943. I just tried to call the local number for the Far Rockaway fire station to ask if records are still in existence for that time period but since they are both volunteer stations, no one was there to answer the phone. There was a local Rockaway paper during that time period, The Rockaway wave but I want to wait until I can narrow the time frame before I search papers. Any ideas how I can find fire records for NY City? Thanks in advance, Gail -- Gail Schinnerer Jorgensen cell - 623-466-2669

    3. Hello Julie, www.familysearch.org The above website used actual county records and stated in their database "NY Birth and Christenings 1640-1962: John Broun Gender:Male Baptism/Christening Date: Baptism/Christening Place: Birth Date:13 Dec 1894 Birthplace:Manhattan, New York, New York, USA Death Date: Name Note: Race: Father's Name:Charles Muller Father's Birthplace: Father's Age: Mother's Name:Frances Broun Mother's Birthplace: Mother's Age: Indexing Project (Batch) Number:C00513-7 System Origin:New_York-ODM Source Film Number:1322308 Reference Number: However, you have stated you sent for the birth record and the name was spelled as Braun, not Broun. Did you see the actual handwriting? The name Braun is the German form of BROWN. I checked for the spelling of BROUN, and it is certainly a surname in Manhattan in the same period. I would like to point out that Frances could be: Broun, Braun, Brown. All three spellings are possible. Also, be aware that the female name Frances may in fact be listed in census or other records as FRANCIS. Many men are also listed as Frances, just poor spelling by census takes. So don't over look any possible record. Because the birth is recorded in the name of the mother, this would mean that there was no marriage between Charles Muller and Frances. Thus, the baby was recorded in the mother's name. I looked on the same website and found that the 1892 census of NY had several Frances Braun/Brown born 1876-1878 , and living in Brooklyn. I also found many more Charles Muller, born 1871-1874 period, also in Brooklyn. I am thinking that the parents may have both lived in Brooklyn, but the baby was born in Mahattan. This is a common occurance. Brooklyn is KINGS COUNTY, but Manhattan is NEW YORK COUNTY, but people tend to go back and forth bewteen the 2 and treat the place as one, even though the counties are different. I also suggest you search the 1880 census of Manhattan and Brooklyn for a Frances Broun, Braun, Brown with a birth date 1876-1878. Make sure you take plenty of notes to refer back to. This will take patience. Go through the New York marriages on the same website, and the stevemorse website, and even italiangen website. See and list out marriages for Frances (surname spelled all 3 ways) in the time frame of 1894 to 1905. You could take it further to 1910 if necessary. There is a possibility she never married and remained single, so you can look for her in 1900 census, 1910, and 1920. Should be listed single. If she married after the 1894 birth, then you really must find the marriage record to further follow her life. Go ahead and post here the actual address she gave on the 1894 birth. Using that info we might have more ideas. I was involved in another Orphan Train child. He was born to parents in Long Island. They were married and had other children. The father had income, but for some unknown reason just one child was singled out and put on the Orphan Train and he was taken in by a family in Missouri. His parents and siblings all lived long lives in Long Island, but he never was part of their lives. It is such a sad story. I would like to help you or at least advise you and I know that others on this list would like to do the same. Some people have access to subscriptions , like www.ancestry.com, which I don't, and may be better able to help you. Let's keep working on this. That's what the list is for, to through out questions and hope for answers. 3. Hello, I am pretty new to this geneology stuff. Here is what I have found and maybe someone can point me to the next step. My grandpa came to MN on the orphan train from NYC. I recently located his birth certificate by contacting the hospital and having them look at records to get names to order a birth certificate. We were always told that his name was Francis braun. It turns out that his mother's name was Frances Braun, she was 17 when she had him and Charles Muller was listed as the father with an unknown address. Her address is listed. His real name or birth name was John Braun. On one website it is listed as Broun. Dec 1894. I see that he is in MN when he was 5 with the Bruggenthies Family on the 1900 census. How can I find any more information on his mother? Maybe she didn't list her real name? I do have an address for her on the birth certificate. Any ideas? thanks Julie " We're lost, but we're making good time!" -YogiBerra
