For Naturization records in NYC try NARA. Don't have the URL but found complete records on a family members there. They have a form where you order the complete record for a fee. No actual records online. Since you have data on name dates and records numbers it may be very easy to get the file. Good luck. theclown16

Hi Dianne, yes, that is his family! I do have several more census data, but none provides any hint towards Herman Otten's birth place (just Kingdom / province of Hanover). seems like all that has to be done is get one birth cert for his kids such as George which will give the mothers maiden name. Since both Herman and his wife are from Hanover getting Herman's wife maiden name would get him that much closer to finding point of origin for Herman and his wife........ I checked familysearch.org and the birth records of a couple of Herman's kids are listed. I thought there might be copies of naturalization docs online but haven't found any so far.
Walter ~ I found one indexed as "Harman" Otten in the 1880 census, age 50, with a wife Annie age 47, and children Annie, age 21; Mary, age 18; Emma, age 12 and George H.age 9. He and his wife and their parents were all listed as having been born in Hanover. He was listed as a retail grocer. Source Citation: Year: 1880; Census Place: New York City, New York, New York; Roll: 880; Family History Film: 1254880; Page: 158D; Enumeration District: 282 Do you think this may be the one? Dianne
Or find the naturalization docs. One of my German ancestors was naturalized in 1855 and papers showed arrival date and general place of origin. From arrival date u can search passenger lists online...which may give more info on origin plus who he was traveling with. ...Kim Sent from my iPhone On May 18, 2011, at 2:43 PM, Rdpiet@aol.com wrote: > seems like all that has to be done is get one birth cert for > his kids such as George which will give the mothers maiden > name. Gail, Driving from Bay Shore to the Queens Borough Public Library's main branch would be a better option, in my opinion, than taking the LIRR to Jamaica and either taking a bus or walking. Regards, Walter Greenspan Great Falls, MT & Jericho, NY </HTML>
There are several naturalization index cards for Otten on Footnote.com, including the following where Herman is a witness for a John Wintjen: W532 Wintjen John court: Common pleas court, NY County date of naturaliz: Dec 8 1863 Bundle #286 page # [-]. Copy of record # 35.1 address of naturalized person: 6 Roosevelt St., NYC Former nationality: English Witness: Herman Otten 14 Franklyn St. NYC There are 2 index cards for 2 Herman Otten's, one dated 1855, one dated 1882. There's also an Otto F. Otten naturalized 1854, very close to the 1855 date of one of the Hermans... I checked familysearch.org and the birth records of a couple of Herman's kids are listed. Don't know if you've tried this but I was able to find my German ancestors from the emmigration records in Germany. Thank you Don for your thoughtful questions. Yes, I do want to know the circumstances because there were varying stories in the newspaper and my mother told me an entirely different story. The father of these children was killed in an auto accident almost exactly two years after the first child died. He fell off the back of a truck while working for the NYPD. There were many moves between the time of the children's deaths and the time of the father's death 2 years later but there were many moves prior to the deaths also. Can anyone who has been to the Queens Borough Public Library tell me the best, safest way to travel to the library to do research? The 2 options I am considering are car or train. I was not sure how close the station is to the library. Would I walk, take a subway or cab? I am staying at my Mom's in Bay Shore, LI, NY. Gail
