    3. Hi Janice, Do you have a birth date for Jacqueline? That would be very helpful. Since she was born about 1923, she likely has a paper trail extending into the period covered by services like veromi.com , which can be searched (a bit laboriously) by birth date and first name. And have you searched the New York City marriage records for a marrage for Jacqueline Ruppert? Of course she may have gone elsewhere but it's worth a try. It's possible that there is a record at the Veteran's Administration which would help you pick up the trail. And finally, have you tried to find the living relatives of her brother, John Kaiser, to ask them? 3. Hello Kathy, I think I have found your grandfather for sure! 1905 NY state census, Bronx, NY. He was 8 years old and in the Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum of NY. You can see this free of charge at: www.familysearch.org You will also see the 1930 census of him and Catherine, at North Bergen, Hudson Co NJ. (If this is the right couple? John b. 1898 NY and Catherine b. 1893 NY.) You will know if that is them in 1930 by their kids listed. If that is your Catherine, then go ahead and put her into the search on the same website and you will see several possible records for her. If the 1930 census is correct, then Catherine's father was born in the Irish Free State (meaning Not in Northern Ireland) and her mother born in NY. Based on that info, if true, you can find her with her parents in 1900 or 1910 census, and don't forget the 1905 NY state census. You can do all of this research at home, on your computer, alone, and FREE of charge. Let me know if I can help more. 1. [NYC-ROOTS] DEATH IN NEW YORK (addition)
    2. Hi Doreen Jackson, It may be useful to know in which village or hamlet in Suffolk County was ALICE LOUISA DAVIS residing at the time of her passing? Currently, there are 10 towns (as well as 2 Indian reservations) in Suffolk County and the 10 towns are further sub-divided into 33 villages (incorporated municipalities) and 124 hamlets (unincorporated areas), yielding 157 communities (33 + 124 = 157). I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan Great Falls, MT & Jericho, NY . Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.

    2. a death which matches.....People visit others and go to hospitals in other areas. Most likely is hardly definitive. I have been searching as best I can online for the death of a Gt.Aunt in or after 1930.  I have contacted many sources that have an email but nothing found.   I have tried other things like random "Google" searches but no luck. Going through Vital Records seems the only avenue I can see now, but it is a rather complicated process outside the USA. Therefore, before doing this I thought I would run it by you good people on this list in case anyone had another suggestion. In 1930 Alice Louisa Davis was 61yrs of age so I would think not too many years to search.  Doreen in the UK ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NYC-ROOTS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. I decided to call Salt Lake City and spoke with Sister Ann - she pulled my request and said that based upon how I ordered it - index film, #, person name, location, date, they should have been able to find the index information which would have contained his cert number. She said that there are some newer folks working there and understanding what an index request is all about is difficult for some to learn. She will take a look herself tomorrow and let me know what she finds. Thanks folks Gail On Wed, Jul 27, 2011 at 12:16 PM, Gail Jorgensen <gailjmom@gmail.com> wrote: > If I need to explore an index to find a cert # so I can eventually > order the cert, how do I best do that? > > I would prefer to do it via the order form with the family history > library in salt lake but I must be doing something wrong. 3. Donna - I don't follow you? If I only have a name location and date, don't I first need to go to an index to get a cert number? Gail Sent from my AT&T iPhone. 3. Thanks for the reply. I am sorry I was not clear. I do know how to find the film for the index. How to do it is where I am confused. I listed the film no, the person, the date and location of the event. I was expecting to receive back the cert number. I know my info is correct and that they are there because I found them in a listing on family search. Does this make sense? I am listing the request on the photoduplication form from FHL - in the middle section. Gail Sent from my AT&T iPhone. 3. You can search the New York City marriage index for them. You can find it in the "Vital Records" pull-down menu at http://www.stevemorse.org I took a quick look at the 1900 census and see him living with his Uncle and family in Queens, assuming it's the same John Barrett. The census shows him as born in September, 1898. The orphanage my grandfather went into is in brooklyn. I would do this myself but I live in Oregon. And I am disabled. Any info would appreciated. My email address is: ugmug1944@yahoo.
