The 1830 census shows an ancestor living on Clarke St. , ward 8 manhattan some of the other streets on subsequent pages are Sullivan, McDougal, Varick, I can find those streets but not Clarke St.. I have tried looking for historical maps on Google but they are too small and unreadable. Does anyone have a sopurce to find where Clarke St is (or used to be)??
David, If you follow this link to Google Maps (http://bit.ly/ClarkStreet), you'll see the running next to Sixth Avenue is a little spur road that has the Chelsea Career and Technical Education HS and the HERE Performing Arts Center. Today, those buildings are numbered as if they are are nearby Sixth Avenue, but they are actually on Clark (no "e") Street. The name disappeared when Sixth Avenue was rammed south -- I forget when that happened. The great website www.italiangen.org has just updated its death, groom and birth records. Death records now begin in 1862 for Kings County (Brooklyn et al) and 1868 for Manhattan. Records for grooms begin in 1864 for Kings County (Brooklyn et al) and 1866 for Manhattan. Birth records too have been updated, now beginning in 1880 for New York City. This free website is a true gift to all of us and is not limited to Italian genealogy, in case anyone is new to the site. It's all-inclusive. Many marriages and births were never recorded and so are not here but just one record can be a breakthrough. Italian Gen has solved many a mystery for me. They accept donations and certainly deserve them for this valuable project.
Thank you for your responses. Knew I could count on this group! Evy

Thanks Bobbi, I don't find the name on the ggg.org/Suffolk index. I did find it in a SUffolk Cty newspaper. I suppose I can request it based on the info in the paper. Hi Elizabeth, You can find the index here: http://www.theggg.org/Suffolk.stm You can find the form to request a copy here: http://www.theggg.org/Suffolk_Request_Form.pdf There will be no charge to get it if it is available. Hi Everyone, I think I may have found a lead on a naturalization for my great grandfather. In one of the newspaper link that Virginia Dunham sent the other day, I found a blurb for a naturalization in 1893 for a Frederick Heine in Riverhead. Although one of the census records says he was naturalized in 1886, it is worth a shot (sin ce I haven't been able to find him). Can someone tell me how I might go about getting a naturalization record from Riverhead and how much might it cost? I suppose I would like to have the petition and the actual document for naturalization. If I went in person, would I be able to get it while I was there or would it be the same as if I did a mail request. A number of years ago I went to SUffolk Cty and they brought out the huge book with my grandfather's birth date written in it, and they gave me a copy of his bc on the spot. A few years ago, I tried to get one for his half-brother and I had to leave the form and they mailed it to me. Not to mention it was $10 more expensive. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Liz
Does anyone have access to the book "Bishop Loughlin's Dispensations, 1859-1866" by Joseph Silinonte? And would be willing to do a marriage look-up for me? I don't live in NY and my library can't get it for me. The internet says names in the book are in order by the groom's name but I have not seen it so can't be sure. The groom is my gg grandfather PATRICK MCCAW. Bride is my gg grandmother ELIZA KELLEY. They were married in Brooklyn probably in 1863. These dispensations have a lot of information and I am most hopeful they will, if present, have county or even townland, of origin. I've tried everything else I can think of. Thanks very much. Virginia
Thanks very much, Velma. I found some names in Hartford through the url you gave. Mary in Greece You wrote: Google www.evendon.net There are several collections there. Hi, Velma, I am still unsure from what you write before if the obituaries say they lived in New York CITY. So many people who live elsewhere use the term "New York" to mean the state just as likely as the city. I am sure they were still making buckets in NYC at that time, but it does sound as if they were not in a city from everything you gave us. You do not state specifically if you looked at city directories for NYC for 1851-1855 [I would look that far because of age of eldest child's birth in Ohio]. If you did look at them, what did you find? IF they lived in NYC, finding William on the city directory is the best chance you have of finding where they lived, which would lead you to the church, which would lead you to the marriage. Did I mention German newspapers in NYC of that period that might list the marriage also? I know I seem disinterested in the family in Germany, but I think those few years where you have not located them might give you the clue you need. Doesn't this look like Henriette though? Name: Henriette Stahl Arrival Date: 8 May 1848 Age: 23 Port of Arrival: New York Port of Departure: Bremen Place of Origin: Deutschland Ship: Emma Family Identification: 889103 Microfilm Serial Number: M237 Microfilm Roll Number: 71 Elizabeth >I am very satisfied that I have researched the family in America. I just know nothing about them when they were in Germany. The information for the NYC reference came from the two obituaries. I had thought originally that they went directly to Ohio. Altho the two obituaries differ in many places they both say that they lived for several (2 o3) years in NY. Some of the things that I have for the American time period. 1. All of the census records - these give different places such as Prussia and Nassau and I have researched how that might have changed. 2. William shows as a bucketmaker (Ohio) in the first census that I have for him. That sounds more like farming area to me. Not too long after that he opened a shop (Ohio(. I have no idea of what he did in NYC.

Hi Janice, If your library has inter-library loan, go there and ask them to send a request to the library that covers that area. If not, then try calling the library that covers that area yourself, and see if they will look it up for you. Good afternoon everyone, This question may have been asked numerous times, but I am looking to obtain the birth certificate of my grandfather, whom was born in NYC in 1914 in Manhattan Borough (the family lived right off of Canal Street). Unfortunately, it appears from the NY Vital Records site, I can only order online if the person ordering the record appears on the birth certificate itself. Since this is my grandfather, this would not be the case. So it seems that one must send in a written (notarized) request, but again, since I would not be named on my grandfather's birth certificate, would my request still be processed. Would appreciate information from anyone that has successfully obtained birth records from the NYC Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene (since they cover all 5 boroughs for births after 1910) and if I will need to provide any additional documentation to show my relationship. All I have is an old address from where the family was living at the time (not far from the Holland Tunnel and Our Lady of Vilnius church) and I do not know the hospital. Thanks in advance! Richard
