    3. Sorry, I know how clunky family search catalog place name use is, and I have just tried that to no avail. I used Joyce's link that took me to a list of NY counties, chose New York County (for Manhattan), and got a list of probate reels. Near the end was an index made later for volumes up to the 20th century, I used that to get the vol. number. Then I clicked on that volume number. Of course I do nto have Joyce's link handy and am rushing at 7 AM to leave the house. Her link will be saved of course on this mailing list. 3. This has been an excellent exchange with great instructions on what to do. I know the wills on line (and also land records) are not of much use to people researching recent inhabitants of New York, but always at least look to see if there are records. It was my failing to do so for my supposed great grandparents (also supposedly poor) that kept me from knowing my grandmother was adopted for so long. More recent work on Wilkinses and DeWitts in the early 19th century has been very productive. I repeated my search for Peter DeWitt (d 1810 Harlem) in New York County recently to see how easy it was to do on line and discovered there was an index that covered all the volumes from late 18th century up into the 20th. Only three Peters, only one in 1810, vol. 48, and then the number that turned out to be the original page number of an older volume (Liber) because these volumes had all been transcribed, by hand, at a later date (so no original signatures). But that original page number was written into the left column of the transcribed volumes whenever the transcriber turned the page of the old volume. So it took only a couple of minutes of clicking around in the familysearch.org scans to find Peter DeWitt's will again with both his sons' names. And remember that the filmed records of LDS are still available by rental at a Family History Center even if they do not have them scanned yet. Also eventually one will be able to search these images the way we search typed ones. Since the work is all done by volunteers, the outcome is free. 3. Joyce and all, This is not exactly true. If you read the entire court document, hopefully you will see, as I did with the 5 that I found, the details of the will spelled out after the proving is done. In other words, the beginning of the documents prove that those making the claim and the contents of the will are true and then the wishes of the deceased are spelled out. 3. In any of a number of places. I think the original post was about Familysearch. Documents are constantly being transcribed there, and the work is amazing, but it would be a miracle if they were all there. Individual counties across the country are beginning to digitize old records of varying ages, some recent, some very old, and you will find them on the county web sites; sometimes the specific department such as deeds or probate. Google can often find them. They're occasionally at Ancestry. Brief overviews of probate contents for some areas, like Pennsylvania Dutch areas of settlement in Pennsylvania, have been available for a long time; they were on CD and many are now at Ancestry. 3. While searching yesterday I noticed New York County is not set up like the other counties I have looked at. For them, will seem to be arranged a few years at a time in alphabetical order, so check the lists for wills in the time frame and last name you are looking for. The index at the bottom that says will index, is not an index for the wills at all. It is a list of testators. It probably won't help you. Newer wills (from about the 40's to present) are not indexed BUT many have index cards with a different type of numbering system. Those newer wills probably need to be obtained on a local level. It probably has to do with NY State privacy laws OR familysearch just does not have the newer stuff in their files yet. Many people die without a will, so checking the probate files might help you also when you search. There are a lot of different types of files on the page I sent out, so explore the others a bit too. The files are huge BUT you won't always find the person you are looking for. Happy Hunting Have a great day Joyce -- Researching Stephenson/Stevenson, Fleury, Heald, Lindelof, Young, Rubino, Cammarota, Mandracchia, Vaiarelli, Mulhern, Johnson, Haight, Erickson, Munson, Northrup, Sears, Camp, Gunn, Allen, Gorham, Plumb, Beard, Rogers, Eliot, Briscoe, Bradley, Mix, Wilmot, Pritchard, Mew, Stone, Sparke, Bayley, Bailey, Redfield, Redfin, Howland, Tilley, Sturgis, Hinckley, Kirk, Norton, Gerard, and many more...

    3. Sometimes someone in the locality will go look it up for you, but it sounds like not here today. Maybe everyone is busy. ;) There used to be a random genealogical acts of kindness web site, and you could find someone in your area and request one. The owner had to give it up, but it might have been regenerated. Also, I think there's an excellent chance that a local genealogist would charge less than $75 a document to go get your documents for you. I've had them charge me really reasonable fees for that sort of thing. Usually they get a bunch of peoples' documents together so it is worth their time. I'd like to have those wills, particularly Ray's, as I didn't know she had one. It could reveal some interesting information. But, I also can't pay $75.00 per will either, so I'll just have to leave it at that. Thanks for the information and I'll consider it if I ever get to Brooklyn. 3. These old documents are steadily being digitized by the counties themselves. Several years ago I worked at one of the companies that contracts to do the digital conversion, doing indexing . Not every county nor every area is yet involved, though, and every locality chooses what they will digitize. Sometimes it's by department, such as deeds, or probate. I was able to find a whole bunch of documents about a three times great grandfather in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, on the county web site. I learned who were the daughters who lived - and the names of their husbands, and that my 2x great grandmother's mother was a second wife.
