Ancestry is not expensive at all if your library has access to it and you can use it at home -----Original Message----- From: Mary Kyritsis via <[email protected]> To: NYC-Roots List <[email protected]> Sent: Sat, Jun 6, 2015 5:56 am Subject: [NYC-ROOTS] Ancestry No, I do NOT like the new setup, and I told them so. The old system had a certain intuitive way of leading you from one thing to another, and this one simply sent me to a pedigree that has nothing to do with my family. I tried with a known person where I have found a great deal in the past, and none of it came up. Useless. Can I live without Ancestry.com? Very likely, if it continues not being a useful site. A lot of my money goes to them yearly which they will miss. 3. I haven not gotten that far yet Barb--but I do intend to find out...I know somewhere in my travels yesterday on the old version I ran into a way to contact corporate but did not look at that link. This morning I discovered that they have info on LIVING PEOPLE listed. On my mothers page (who is deceased) they have made a note in her file for every time she had a child so they are listing on a PUBLIC PAGE of a deceased person, not only the names of the living children but their exact birth dates. ID thieves will have a field day with that once they figure that out! I did find a feedback forum this AM and I left a scathing review there, recommend others do the same...BUT unless they hear from us in very large numbers I would not expect anything to change. Right now you have the ability to go back to the "Classic Ancestry" but when you switch back to classic you see a note that says pretty soon the New Ancestry will be the ONLY option... I wonder if they are trying to keep people from having large trees and they are trying to save space on their servers...you cannot find folks in a large tree the way they have it set up...and the tree view is awful only showing 1 generation at a time. The ONLY thing I have found so far to leave feedback is the suggestions link http://www.ancestry.com/suggestions I used the General feedback <https://ancestry.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_bEi2G4scYqbsntP&ucdmid=005f7a38-0003-0000-0000-000000000000> but there are several other options that would fit the bill. Site navigation <http://ancestry.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_5nX2T2C4tFV0NE1&ucdmid=005f7a38-0003-0000-0000-000000000000> might be another place to put your remarks as they certainly have messed that us also. I'll do some digging to try to get a corp address...This is worse than what they did the the Ellis Island site BUT it has the same look and lack of function--I wonder if it was designed by the same people? Someone commented re having to do with the fact the site is up for sale...I thought about that...making it "modern and techy" looking...It is quite clear that nobody involved in this had a clue about research and all the things that were added to the "Classic Ancestry" over the years to improve functionality. They have set the site back 10 years and unless they hear from a LOT of us that is the way it will stay...so if ever there was a time to use networking to get everyone you know informed and also to get them to complain, we may be stuck with this mess, which makes a LOT of things just too cumbersome. When you look at a person's page, the Census data is off to the side as are the directories...over the years I have painstakingly copied the addresses I found in directories each time I attached one so I could follow their movements easily in their timeline...That is now ALL GONE...You virtually get NOTHING in their timeline except when their parents died and when their kids or born...for any other info on them you have to poke around in various places And of course FEEDBACK has a limited # of characters you can use in your "suggestion" so one cannot even tell them everything that is wrong with the site. I was on the news site for about 30-45 min trying to understand how it was set up--but when I tried to search for a new person that had a lot more stories etc so I could see what that looked like the search function did not work. I am worried that is I switch back to new version again that at some point I might not be able to get back to the old version but I am going to have my work cut out for me making stories for descendancy for everyone I possibly can as that function is gone too...while you automatically see your relationship to someone, you can no longer see the lines that got you there This is 10 x worse than Ellis Island--at least that only affected one small portion of documents...THIS affects your entire tree. Finding a way to get them to listen is going to be difficult as many people are not even going to realize this new version exists until one day they sign on and are in this strange new site... I suggest we all network as much as possible and get as many people to file complaints as possible... 3. This new site is AWFUL...DO use it--try to run it through the paces--I could not even get search for a person on this tree to work... No more being able to view your pedigree No more being able to view HOW you got the relationship you have with a person...The ONLY benefit I see is that you are readily able to see if you have alternate birth-dates that should not be there For now you can switch back to the old site in a matter if seconds and leave feedback about what you don't like about the "new and improved" site. It reminded me also of Ellis Island... Nothing useful re research was done..all they did was make it pretty...in the process they made it pretty useless...I have 10,000 people in my tree---what they have done is made it impossible to get around my tree... Is there ANYONE here who can remember 500 names let alone 10,000? Anyone with an ancestry.com account NEEDS to go to the new site, run it through the paces and then tell them everything you don't like. At the MINIMUM we need to be able to choose which view we prefer at will...but the way it sits right now it looks like they are planning on leaving it this way. It is GREAT for the "2 week free trial wonders" LOL TOTALLY useless for any serious researcher!!! Register your complaints before it is too late and we are stuck with this mess...UGH I could scream................. AND they rolled it out before it was totally ready to go--you cannot even add a story right now...you cannot see at a glance where your ancestors were on every census in the timeline They took away anything that was good in favor of "pretty"... When what they SHOULD have been working on was all the transcription errors. Spread the word to ALL your geni friends---if enough of us complain maybe they will see the light I WOULD usually say Have a good day...but they ruined mine and they are going to ruin yours if you take a look. 3. I finally got to the bottom of this for those who were puzzled as I was and I did determine the picture is who I thought it was. After a Fulton Postcard site search was fruitless I decided to do a directory search on ancestry.com using last name Wynn and the address. I found the photographer was a Charles G Wynn and the ONLY years I could find that he was in operation at that address were 1902-1904. This does seem it could fit in with the "mourning" theory as Isabella lost her son in 1903 to a strangulated hernia. Thanks for all your help folks...more than one way to skim a cat and all the pieces of the puzzle folks HERE provided helped me figure this out without question. I can be sure now this picture is who I thought it was and the "mourning attire" may indeed be on target...OR since she has flowers in her hat and a white blouse on perhaps she bought new clothes for the funeral and decided to have her picture taken since she had a new outfit that looked "smart" That hat is SURE not like anything I saw on websites for that time period BUT this was a 70ish year old lady and undoubtedly was more conservative than the "young belles" we see on the various historical clothing sites. One thing I DID notice on the various site for historical clothing was that most of them seemed to focus on wealthier folks who wore fashionable clothes...too bad there are not better sites out there for what "every day" folks were wearing :-) Have a great day everyone and thanks again Joyce -- Researching Stephenson/Stevenson, Fleury, Heald, Lindelof, Young, Rubino, Cammarota, Mandracchia, Vaiarelli, Mulhern, Johnson, Haight, Erickson, Munson, Northrup, Sears, Camp, Gunn, Allen, Gorham, Plumb, Beard, Rogers, Eliot, Briscoe, Bradley, Mix, Wilmot, Pritchard, Mew, Stone, Sparke, Bayley, Bailey, Redfield, Redfin, Howland, Tilley, Sturgis, Hinckley, Kirk, Norton, Gerard, and many more...

I've been a bit nervous about that "playing hardball" bit, which is why I haven't even tried to order this record before - it seemed too complicated to essentially have to comply with the requirements for receiving a recent death certificate when the one I want is almost 70 years old. 3. Gail, I did not request an extended search, because I was *pretty* sure of my information, but I suppose if she had, for example, died in a hospital in Manhattan, I could have been wrong. However, the form they sent back didn't indicate that they had failed to find the certificate after a search, but that they hadn't looked ("couldn't process your request [because] . . . one or more of the required fields was not filled out.") The fields that were highlighted were father's name, mother's name, social security number (would a housewife in 1949 have even necessarily had an SSN?) and "CERTIFICATE NUMBER (if known)." I get the feeling they're not clear on the definition of "required field." I did leave all of the above fields blank and wonder if I would have had better luck if I had written "unknown" or something like that. I have half a mind to just do that and send it back, risking the price of a stamp before paying for an extended search when I'm pretty sure I know when and where she died. (The other issue was that rejected my ID, not for being expired, but for having an expiration date that was coming up soon, which seemed absurd. If they'd just processed the request, I'd have had the certificate before it expired! But now I have to wait for my new drivers license to show up before I can resubmit the request.) BUT when I looked at her kids deaths one died in 1897 and one in 1903 so she probably was in mourning for one of them...the picture certainly fits what her age would have been during that time.. Sure seems like a strange time to have your picture taken though LOL I wonder if photo technology was pretty new to them OR it was the first time she could afford to have her picture taken. We'll never know. I'll have to research tintypes as I think that might be the kind of picture it is. Thanks for ALL the responses. 3. Jim, If memory serves me correctly, they are now in Room 191 next door. These books were in Room 121 when I last used them. They definitely had the book for 1949 (one year's book, 1968, is missing). This will get you the certificate number - however, if the folks at the DOH want to play hardball, having the certificate number may not help. They make the rules, and even though we should be able to get death certs from 1949, they may not agree.
