    1. [NYC-ROOTS] 1910 census -- looking for 193 Osborn St in Brooklyn
    2. Mary D. Taffet via
    3. If Steve Morse's site were functional right now, I'd go there to find the enumeration district for 193 Osborn Street (Brooklyn) in the 1910 census. But until his site comes back online, I'm trying to find that address in any other way I can. I think I've narrowed it down to Ward 26, which shows other streets in that general area, but there are many enumeration districts within Ward 26. I'm trying to go back and forth between Google maps and the enumeration district descriptions that show up if you go to browse the records in Ward 26, but can't find all of the roads mentioned on the map, so I don't know which set of images to start with. If I have to, I'll go through all of them, but that will take a very long time. So I'm hoping that somebody else might already know what enumeration district I would find 193 Osborn Street in. -- Here's hoping, Mary

    3. Hi Joyce, I'm more than a little confused.  First of all I didn't realize that there was an update on Ancestry.  I'm not having any problems and everything seems to work fine for me.  I can print out a descendancy chart just fine and dates are all there.  I would like place of burial in the individual info but that wasn't there in the previous version.  Am I missing something? Barbara Kiersh On Saturday, June 6, 2015 2:01 PM, Joyce Presnall via <[email protected]> wrote: I am probably going to shoot myself for volunteering to do this BUT it is the best way I can see for all of us to ID the problems we are seeing with the New and NOT improved version of ancestry.com. I am asking for everyone's help in ID'ing issues they see. PLEASE do not respond with 1 complaint at a time--that WILL drive me crazy LOL Put the NEW ancestry through every pace you can think of, try to use every function you are used to working and email me ONE consolidated list of all the issues you find. Once I have a consolidated list I will be happy to email you the WORD doc so when we register complaints you can easily remember all the problems to tell them about. In order not not clog up the lists, please email me off list BUT USE THE SAME THREAD sop I can easily find all your comments. Here is what I have come up with so far---it takes a while to find everything that is wrong with NEW site..so really put it through the paces and try to check everything. Thank you Joyce NEW ancestry problems Formatting in Stories is useless as when you look at them ALL the text runs together ---this makes various things very hard to read---If you have a long story and it has NO paragraphs-it becomes a nightmare to read and understand…Paragraphs were invented for a reason—it breaks up the info to make it more readable. Copying the descendancy chart is useless now as it does not come out with spacing between the various people in the line. It runs them all together making it difficult to tell one generation from the next NO ages in the chronology in Fact View—It is important to to show people’s ages at the time of various things happening ESPECIALLY with the birth of a child.  It used to be easy to see if there was an error in some ones birth date or something if you noticed on the timeline the person was 11 years old or something just as crazy --- You cannot see how old a person is when they die---I have seen some trees that have people 119 (or in one case I saw someone who was 300 years old at time of death.) We NEED to be able to quickly see how old a person is all along the timeline!!! NOW we have to take out our calculator for all those events to see if it makes sense—you USED to be able to tell at a glance—THIS is going to CREATE a lot more mistakes in trees if we cannot readily see how old a person was at various events—it used to be quite clear there was an error of some type—now we cannot tell so there are going to be a lot more trees showing up where someone had a kid at 11 years old OR lived to the age of 300… Can no longer print a tree view of a family unless you want to use TONS of black ink—also when you print and the background is such a dark gray it is not as visually pleasing…Black text with a white background is the NORMAL way of printing things.  I don’t want to spend a fortune on ink to be able to print off family views so my tree makes sense to the person who will inherit all my genealogy info.  I am in the process of making paper copies of many things so the person who takes over my work when I die will have a clue of who it who---It will cost me a fortune to print off all the gray--- There is NO way to do a quick edit on someone.  I have a person marked UNKNOWN for date of death.  I want to change that to a blank  as ancestry techs told me a while back that one should NOT put unknown in a field as the computer searches for a death date of “unknown” BUT there is no way for me to edit this as his death date of “unknown” does not show up in the timeline.  I want the ability to do a quick edit in the header portion of the profile page...There is NO WAY for me to get this entry of UNKNOWN off his page . ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. You are missing a LOT if you have not signed onto the NEW ancestry which they tell us is going to become the permanent ancestry. WE ALL need to speak out if we want to have the option to continue using what that are calling "Classic" ancestry. The NEW site is horrible as far as I am concerned. MANY of the features we used to use are GONE. To see what a mess they have made of things you need to go to the NEW ancestry view. You will be able to switch back to Classic right now but soon the NEW version will be the only one unless we speak up. They kept this NEW thing VERY quiet. I only know ONE person who was notified of the coming changes--and luckily she told me about it so I was able to see for myself. I have been trying to put the site through it's paces and there is SO many tools that have disappeared it is crazy. To sign on to the NEW and NOT improved version you need to go to the upper R corner and click on NEW...you are in for a shock. So far I have compiled a 2 page list of things that have either disappeared OR don't work right. I will forward this list (which is in WORD) to anyone who wants it- I suggest EVERYONE take it for a thorough test drive and see what I am talking about. MANY tools I use are gone...like being able to make comments. I use comments on my profile page to make notes about links I have found for various things that I am not sure belong in my tree, I use comments to remind myself of issues to check into. When I am confused about something I make a comment and sometimes other folks have left ME a comment that helped me figure something out...You can no longer make comments on stories. When I upload a story from an outside source I use the comments to put a link to that info on the web as if you put it IN the story, most the time the link gets broken. Stories no longer have ANY formatting. This means anything you add as a story is going to be one non stop long story...I often paste the info on records I find on familysearch for birth, marriage and death. On family search it is nicely laid out...when you put it on ancestry now it is one long paragraph, making it difficult to ascertain what the familysearch docs says. Comments on anything are a thing of the past...member connect is gone except on the home page which it not very useful when you want to see what other folks have on a specific person. SO many things are gone or are not working at the current tine. Things that are not working correctly are not as much of a concern as they will probably get those things fixed as long as they are informed about it. It is the research tools which have vanished that are scary. I used to have all kinds of comments, links etc for people etc--that helped me stay on track with people and know from a glance what issues remained to be resolved---GONE with the new system. SO I have 15 years worth of various notes to remind myself of things I will never see again. We are only going to be able to keep the ancestry we know, if we can convince them we want to be able to have the choice to view out trees and do research under either option. Right now, the ancestry you are currently looking at is going away=FOREVER It will only be through LOTS of us voicing our displeasure that we have a CHANCE of them keeping the ancestry version we prefer. I will be happy to email anyone the WORD doc I have made so far--I have not explored everything and YOU might find things that YOU like that I don't know of gone also... If we are to have any hope of keeping MANY things that help us do out research we need to speak up. The ONLY good thing I can say about the NEW version is that is shows you all the alternate DOB's, DOD's and names. You can no longer edit any field for birth death etc that says unknown...there is just NO way to delete that entry (which ancestry told me years ago should not be done as ancestry did NOT program their computers to read "unknown" as a blank space. There IS a quick programming fix for this ancestry COULD make --and it should have been this way from the start to treat all boxes that say unknown as a blank...right now they don't--so anyone you have written unknown for the ancestry is searching for a birth or death date of UNKNOWN--You will NEVER get a hint as to the birth date on those folks unless it comes from some other doc that shows up as a hint on your tree. There are SO many things wrong with the way the site is set up now that I cannot go into them all. I will be happy to email a WORD doc for the things I have found so far---and I have not even scratched the surface. Everybody should check out the new version and see what you think--but to find things that no longer work right you are going to have to try to do things in your tree that you used to be able to do. JMHO the new version, which they were VERY quiet about, so most folks will be blind-sided when they log on one day and find all their comments, and a LOT of their stuff missing they are not going to be happy. If they hear from enough of us (and there are several methods of dong this, I advise using as many ways possible such as FEEDBACK calling them and also writing to Corporate. Right now they WANT to hear from us...and they need to hear abotu every single thing you don't like so they either give us back those functions OR let us keep Classic as an alternative. If we DON'T voice our opinions NOW-one day we are going to wake up and find a LOT of things we have put on our tree either gone or messed up. DO sign on while you still have the ability to switch back to the old AFTER you have explored the new site and seen the changes that YOU don't like--they have taken away a LOT of valuable research tools. Since most the site is dark gray or black now it is going to cost you a fortune to print off things for your personal files... I hope a LOT of people help me find all the things we don't like so we can let them know. That is the ONLY shot we have of getting the site to be usable as it is now...MANY things are going away. I imagine they planned on sneaking these new changes in on us...MANY people are mad as a hornet about the changes. Let me know if you want a copy of the 2 pages I have found so far--I haven't even looked at many parts of the site yet. I am a little afraid to to be honest..so many things are messed up now. 3. Hardly the venue to talk about what you do not like about ancestry when ancestry is the owner of the Message boards. 3. No, I do NOT like the new setup, and I told them so. The old system had a certain intuitive way of leading you from one thing to another, and this one simply sent me to a pedigree that has nothing to do with my family. I tried with a known person where I have found a great deal in the past, and none of it came up. Useless. Can I live without Ancestry.com? Very likely, if it continues not being a useful site. A lot of my money goes to them yearly which they will miss. Mary in Greece

    1. [NYC-ROOTS] I am working on a consolidated list of things that don't work or we don't like w/ New Ancestry-Please help
    2. Joyce Presnall via
    3. I am probably going to shoot myself for volunteering to do this BUT it is the best way I can see for all of us to ID the problems we are seeing with the New and NOT improved version of ancestry.com.
