    1. [NYC-ROOTS] Patrick Mundy & Nora Sullivan
    2. Bill Mayrose via
    3. Hello, I am helping a friend who has limited information about her parents and no information about her grandparents and beyond. Her father, Patrick Joseph Mundy/Munday was born in Co. Donegal, Ireland and he arrived in NYC in 1926. He married Nora Sullivan (born in Co. Kerry, Ireland). Patrick’s SS-5 (signed 11/28/1936) shows his DOB as 1/1/1905; parents Terence Mundy and Alice (Kerrigan) Mundy; living at 292 Cypress Ave in the Bronx; working at Tishman Realty Company located at 136 East 57th Street in NYC. The 1940 Census shows Patrick, Nora and Alice (age 3) Mundy living at 307 83rd Street in Manhattan. Based on the SS-5 info, I believe that I have found Patrick’s family in the 1901 and 1911 Ireland Census but am hoping to access other U.S. documents to support this possible connection. I have not been able to locate a NYC marriage certificate for Patrick Mundy and Nora Sullivan (believed to have married around 1936 and were Roman Catholic). Are the groom and bride indices at IGG/GGG complete or should I order microfilmed indices from Family Search? Any other suggestions on confirming Patrick’s parents’ names and finding out who Nora’s parents were? Thanks for any help. Bill

    3. Robert, The law was changed in 2014. Part of the budget bill that was passed included language that bars public release of Social Security death data that is less than 3 years after the death. The law took effect in March, 2014 so it will be 2017 before any deaths begin to be added to the "master file." The wise politicians and bureaucrats decided that limiting the information would reduce identity theft and fraud which outweighed --in their minds-- any use genealogists and other researchers might have. They also created huge subscription fees/programs for companies and individuals to gain access to the master file...all politics and money. 3. Ok, Thanks for the replies. 1. No he wasn't a priest.....Protestant Irish lol and no sister Eileen. "Was this James Cunningham by chance a priest, with a sister named Eileen? ...Kim Danielsen?" 2. I do not know the name of the Aunt he is referring to in his letter to his mother in 1938. He only mentions her daughter Anne and a George Hendren by name. Think George was only a friend of the family. He does say that his Aunt (who was buried the day he wrote the letter) was now resting in a lovely cemetery in Brooklyn along-side her husband. Can't find any other close family who also went to America. Also he may have called her Aunt but she may have been a close friend of his mother's as well.....will try and check this with my mother-in-law who is 93 and still has all faculties. "She, the poster has to track the family she referenced as his Aunt as perhaps were the Aunt and cousins are buried maybe James is at the same cemetery" 3. His full name was James McCullough Cunningham but he seems to have dropped the McCullough after arriving in NY, except for official documents. i.e. Application for Social Security Number, Application for Citizenship etc. 4. Can't locate him in the 1940 Census-unless he wasn't in NY for some reason.....or he just dodged the census taker. 5. His social security number was definitely 092-05-0614 I have a copy of his original application. So if you find this number in the SSDI it only gives Oct 72 and New York as death information, no address or zip code. "Name: James Cunningham State of Issue: New York Date of Birth: Thursday July 16, 1908 Date of Death: October 1972 Est. Age at Death: 64 years, 2 months" This is the correct one. 6. Don't know if he ever married, that's another reason I'm hunting for his Death Certificate. I did apply to somewhere in NY with the SS number and Oct 72 for death certificate but the one I received wasn't the right one and numerous emails to the place with no replies....so guess they aren't interested in fixing it.....then again it may be the wrong place for where he died and the one I got the only James Cunningham died Oct 1972 that they had on record. Why can't you guys have a central repository per State for official BDM records like we do in Australia (per State) and England, nationally? Thanks for any input. Kate Cunningham

    1. [NYC-ROOTS] Death of James McCullough CUNNINGHAM 1972
    2. Kate Cunningham via
    3. Hello everyone, I'm hoping someone can help or point me in the right direction. I have managed to put together a Time Line for James McCullough Cunningham based on online records. James was my husband's uncle and we would dearly like to know where he is buried. 1908 16th July James born Newry, County Down, Northern Ireland 1911 Census of Crobane, County Down, Northern Ireland 1929 28th Sep James leave for New York aboard SS Transylvania - have passenger list 1929 6th Oct Certificate of Arrival 1930 8th April Appears on the 1930 Federal Census living at 77 W 118th Street 1936 24th Nov Applies for a Social Security Number living at 2032 5th Avenue give his place of work as Union Dime Savings Bank cnr of 6th Ave and 40th St Social Security Number 092-05-0614 have copy of application so know I have correct number. 1937 11th Jan Applies for Naturalisation Petition number 276155 1938 Letter home where he is staying with his Aunt and cousins (HENDREN) in Brooklyn 1941 Land transfer deed for land in Northern Ireland where it shows his address as 240 East 24th St Not sure if he served in the military during WWII..have a possible military record but can't definitely assign it to my James. 1972 James dies according to the SSDI records for 092-05-0614..but all it gives is New York (no suburb or county) and date as Oct 1972. Don't know if he ever married, lost touch with his family in Northern Ireland after signing land deed in 1941. Sad thing is his mother was still alive in 1972 and she didn't know he had died. Now if you have taken the time to read this saga, thank you very much. Any ideas of how I can find out where he was living at his time of death so I can apply to the correct place for a copy of his death certificate? I added all know addresses as it appears he stuck around the mid-town region..please correct me if I'm wrong. I'm in New Zealand and don't know NY at all. Hoping someone can help. Cheers from a very chilly and overcast Wellington NZ Kate Cunningham

    1. Re: [NYC-ROOTS] Death certificate - Town of Hempstead (Nassau County, NY)
    2. metronycancestry via
    3. If the DC is more than 50 yrs old, you are entitled to it, even if you are not a directline descendant. However, you really need to know the exact place of death. LDS lists a Death Index for NYS in the 1960s. Warning: Lately many municipalities have refused me actual DC copies; instead they've sent me typewritten transcriptions that omit key information, but they charge full price. Another point is that there is a Village of Hempstead, Town of Hempstead, Town of North Hempstead. -----Original Message----- From: Debbie via <[email protected]> I need to request a death certificate for a man who died in the late 1960s in either Long Beach or Atlantic Beach. It appears that both are located in the Town of Hempstead in Nassau County. 1. Where do I get the death certificate? I looked at the website for the Town of Hempstead and they only seem to list marriage licenses. 2. Can I request the record? I am not a direct descendant.... 3. Is there any other source for obtaining the record that might be more affordable than requesting it from the gov't? Might the LDS have the record? TIA! Debbie
