    3. This is great news! Thanks for sharing Mary. It will help a lot to know what's there in some detail, and hopefully this includes at least search indexes for these records, but then getting access to actually acquire copies of these specific records, without paying an arm and a leg, could be a whole different challenge but I guess time will tell... -Charles At 12:00 AM 9/18/2015, you wrote: >Date: Thu, 17 Sep 2015 18:26:06 -0400 >From: "Mary D. 3. I think that the Italian Civil Registration records have been digitized, and are listed online, but last I checked you had to be logged in to an FHL computer to access them - logging in with my account didn't work. I don't know why the Italian government stipulated those restrictions (probably has something to do with putting the records up on their own website, Antenati <http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.it/en>), but that's just an example of the restriction imposed by some of the organizations the FHL partners with. 3. I'm attending the New York State Family History Conference here in Syracuse, and noticed today at the NYGBS table that they are developing a new research guide, along the lines of the research guide for the state that they published in the last year (that one is described at <http://newyorkfamilyhistory.org/global/store/new-york-family-history-research-guide-and-gazetteer>). The new research guide has the title "The Municipal Archives of New York City, An Authorized Guide for Family Historians". There was no indication when the new item would be available, but I added my name and email address to the sheet for notifications when it will be published. They had a flyer describing what the contents will cover, and it includes the following: -- Birth, marriage, and death records and certificates -- Marriage licenses -- Geographical indexes to births -- New Netherland material, 1647-1674 -- City, town, and village records from the pre-borough city, 1663-1896 -- Almshouse records, 1758-1953 -- City directories -- Civic directories, aka Green Books -- Police census of NYC, 1890 -- Jury censuses, 1816, 1819, 1821 -- Court records 1684-1966 -- Coroner and Chief Medical Examiner records, 1823-1950 -- District Attorney records 1895-1971 -- Assessed valuation of real estate 1789-1979 -- Department of Buildings, 1866-1975 -- NY County Court of General Sessions and grand jury indictments, 1879-1893 -- City council records, 1647-1977 -- Civil [Service Employees] List, 1883-1967/68 -- Bodies in transit -- New York state census microfilm -- Photography archives I didn't think to ask how close to being done the publication might be, but there is currently no direct mention of this item on their website that I could find. If I remember to ask when I go back tomorrow, I'll try to find out if they have an estimate for when it might be ready. -- Mary

    3. Hi, Frances, The censuses before the 1870 2nd enumeration of NYC do not give house numbers. Those are the consecutive building and household numbers created by the census taker as he went from house to house. You need to check city directories for a couple of years each side of that census to find out where the relative lived (if it is a working person or widow). If the years are not provided yet by Ancestry, you can find them on fold3 or from LDS (familysearch.com) perhaps on line, certainly by renting film. If you are in NYC, they are available in a couple of different institutions.
