Why don't you transcribe and the Birth Certificate so that we might help you. Have you searched historical newspapers? It could help if you have a street address for the family, and use that to search also. -----Original Message----- From: Julie Bruggenthies via <[email protected]> I haven't contacted the Children's Aid society because my grandpa came from the Foundling Hospital - the Catholic kids. We have his records from the nuns. I would now like more information on the parents listed on the birth certificate. Julie Bruggenthies Menomonie, WI
True, there was no fire of New York Foundling records. It is/was common for nuns to slightly alter children's birth names in the name of "privacy." Please clarify, WHERE did you finally get the Birth Certificate? -----Original Message----- From: Julie Bruggenthies via <[email protected]> My grandpa came on the orphan train from NYC. We spent 50 yrs trying to find his birth cert. We were told that all the records at the Foundling hospital were destroyed in a fire. We later found out that wasn't true and I was able to get the microfiche records from his file though they weren't very legible. I finally contacted the lying-in Hospital in NYC and asked to look for his birth on the date we thought his birthday was. Turns out we thought his real name was Francis Braun - that is what the nuns led everyone to believe. His mother's name was Frances Braun. She named him John Braun and BINGO I got the birth cert. Took 50 years. He was "Indentured" in MN. I have been told you couldn't adopt back then. We thought he came when he was 13 since that is what the indentured papers said. BUT he is on the census at 5 years of age so we assume he was small when he came. From my research there were Catholic kids and protestant kids that came from the Children's home so! ciety. The catholic kids supposed already had a family where they were going to. The Protestant kids were loaded up and displayed at each train stop and people could pick a child. There is an Descendants of Orphan train gathering here every year still in MN. Julie Bruggenthies Menomonie, WI
I remember this case from long ago. No immigrant group merely sent children away; it had to be for the child's welfare. About fifty different NYC "charities" participated in the Orphan Train movement. New York Foundling was the key participant and is cooperative w/ providing records. The Catholic Home Bureau is another key player. Contact both of them. Since the "adoptive" farm family was not native English speakers, they may have confused the surname. We don't know my great-grandmother's original birth name, but we assume that it could be Caroline LORAN, based on the 1880 census, which also showed "adopted", "state of New York". All other subsequent records show her name as Carmelitta "Carrie" ROOS, born in New York City on June 1, 1876. The name Carmelitta Mary ROOS was apparently given to her by the ROOS family, and later shortened to Carmelite or Carme. Valentin and Magdalena ROOS were already in their 60's at the time of the 1880 census, and they had two grown daughtes still living at home with them, and so we assumed that Caroline could have been an illegitimate daughter of one of these two, but research has not been able to prove this, and all records show New York City as the place of Caroline's birth in 1876, while the ROOS family had lived continuously in St. Clair County from the time of their arrival in this country until the 1880 census, and subsequently. The 1880 census of St. Clair County, Illinois, also shows several other children from "New York" who were "adopted" by local farm families. No local adoption records have been found so far for Carmelite/Caroline LORAN or for ROOS. We have checked Orphan Train records and have researched through the Orpahn Train Society, but with no luck. The ROOS family did not tell Caroline/Carmelite much about her origins (maybe they didn't really know themselves). One time they told her that her biological parents were killed in a "car" accident (assuming that this meant streetcar or railroad car). Another time, they told her that her real surname was GORDON, and another time they told her JORDAN. One time they told her that her ancestry was Irish, and another time they told her that her ancestry was Spanish. She married at the young age of 19 to Louis MAURATH and had 3 children. So, I just thought I'd throw this out there again, and maybe someone is researching for their ancestors young sister name Caroline LORAN who was sent away from the family, for whatever reason. Or maybe some new leads have appeared? So, if anyone out there has any other ideas or suggestions or can help in any way, I'm open to hearing from you, and would really appreciate it. There's a bit of a debate about white gloves, but one school of thought (the one I subscribe to) is that while gloves are necessary when handling photographs, documents on paper are at a greater risk from gloved hands (because you lose dexterity when wearing gloves and are more likely to tear them) than from clean, dry, bare hands. I had posted a query about the VCA to the list some time ago and have just found a more amplified explanation on the New York History Blog/New York City's Evacuation Day Planned (http://newyorkhistoryblog.org). *"In the years immediately following 1783 there were apparently spontaneous demonstrations and parades around Bowling Green on Evacuation Day, which were largely led initially by Revolutionary War veterans. It was on Evacuation Day in 1790 that the New York Veteran Corps of Artillery (“VCA”) was formed as a company of soldiers designed to defend the City."*
Bernard, An article about the accident in 1911 in the Port Jervis Tri-States Union states the undertaker was C.L. Terwilliger & Son & internment was at Pond Eddy. Article said that he hadn't worked for the Erie railroad very long & little was known about him. Charles L. Terwilliger's business later became Terwilliger - Woolsey & was in Port Jervis. Perhaps the business still exists? Might they have historical records? It looks like Pond Eddy might only have three cemeteries: http://www.newyork-genealogy.com/Pond-Eddy-Genealogy.cfm Perhaps contact each one to see if Owen MORGAN is there, if there is a headstone, if the cem office has any other info? I would map out the town where he died and adjoining towns in both states. Then I would find and get the contact info for three sources--the local public library, the local historical society (it may be on the county level), the person in each town who is the unofficial expert on local history. There is always such a person. Ask the librarian and the historical society who it might be. Then I would telephone each of those sources, being courteous and friendly, and tell them in brief what you describe below. It will take patience and follow-up emails but establishing that personal contact is really worthwhile. It makes the world go round. In non-genealogical historical research, I have done this many times and it usually is most helpful. This is a story with local interest and there should be newspaper articles and other info available. Good luck--Virginia From: Bernard Morgan via <[email protected]> I am trying to find my great-grandfather Owen Morgan parents. I have been trying for 25 years now with little luck. Hello, If he was working for the railroad, have you tried to see if he was a member of the railroad union? There might have been a death benefit paid to his widow. Also, if the accident occurred on the Pennsylvania side of the river, you could try the Pike county library to see if any of the local newspapers published a story at the time. hope this helps. pete greene From: Bernard Morgan via <[email protected]> To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, November 12, 2015 4:06 PM Subject: [NYC-ROOTS] NYS records?? She died in 1928 in St. Louis, MO at the young age of 52. You can see her wedding picture at ... http://zither.us/zitherist.louis.maurath This is one of those dead-end brick walls, as I've been researching for Caroline/Carmelite's origins since I was young, for over 30 years, and even hired researchers a couple of times, but with no luck. Julie, have you contacted the Children's Aid Society - http://www.childrensaidsociety.org/ The archivist, Victor Remer, that I dealt with years ago was so helpful in helping me locate records on my husband's grandfather and his 5 siblings. They had a record for each child which included dates of departure from NYC to Kansas. In a few instances, they had pictures, letters, etc. Victor Remer has since passed away and I have been told that the New York Historical Library has the records now. The Protestant kids were loaded up and displayed at each train stop and people could pick a child. www.familysearch.org has them but you have to pay 7.50 per film and view at a family history library or affiliated library. my local public library is an affiliate so it's very convenient. enter your zip code on the familysearch site. remember marriage records available to the public only go up to 1937.Virginia From: Bill Mayrose via <[email protected]> To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, November 9, 2015 10:01 AM Subject: [NYC-ROOTS] NYC Marriage Certificates I am interested in viewing a number of NYC marriage certificates from the 1930s. Is there a location where I can view them before deciding if I want to purchase? Thanks.
