    1. Death Records
    2. Bob Landon
    3. After having some problems locating death records in the Broome County area, the thought occurred to me - are the Town of Binghamton records in a different place than the City records? If they are, where are the Town of ... records available? Second question: If someone was in the State Hospital (off Fairview Ave.) when they died, would those death records be in the Town, the City, or in Albany? Any help would be appreciated.

    1. Changing servers
    2. Vicki Titus
    3. Over the next few weeks (months?), I will be converting over to a new server. Since it will require that I change all the e-mail tags and other links to my personal web space on all pages, it might take a while. I will be starting with Broome County, as it has half as many tags. During the same process, I will be adding an e-mail form for queries that will hopefully standardize the function. There will also be an e-mail address specifically for queries. My new e-mail address will be vtitus@cox-internet.com The query address for Broome will be broome@cox-internet.com.... Cortland, when implemented, will be cortland@cox-internet.com. I will notify, or at least try to notify everyone when I turn off IPA, but that will be a LOOOOONG time away. Vicki

    1. Hurlburt Diaries
    2. Tim Doyle
    3. Hello all: You may have seen the link from the Broome Co., NY GenWeb pages to the 1862 diary of Isaac Hurlburt. This diary has been completely transcribed and is online for everyone to read. I also have the 1874 diary of Isaac Hurlburt and the 1904 diary of Jennie Hurlburt. Both are partially transcribed and online at the same site at http://www.gentree.com/hurlburt/ I just returned from a research trip to upstate New York and uncovered four more Hurlburt diaries! I now have the 1871 diary of Isaac Hurlburt and the 1905, 1908, and 1914 diaries of Mary Ellen (Holcomb) Hurlburt. All of the diaries (except the 1908 and 1914 diaries) were written by people who lived in the New Ohio / Colesville area. Many neighbors and family members are listed. I hope to have all of the diaries transcribed and online as soon as I can. Note: The 1908 and 1914 diaries were written after the family had moved to southern California. 1. Francis Rulison (1829-1907?)
    2. Bob Landon
    3. I've been searching this family in Broome County for a while and have run into a wall. Francis Rulison (my gg grandfather) is listed in Conklin Forks (census, newspaper notes) through at least 1896. He also appears in the city directories from 1900-1906, living at 31 Margaret Street. Neither he nor his wife Deborah are listed in the 1907 directory, but Deborah is listed in the 1908 and 1909 Directories at 31 Margaret Street, as "wid of Frank". She died in 1910 (I have the obituary, and have seen the interment record at Floral Park). Francis's Grave Marker says died 1907, but the interment record says September 1910. Anybody have a suggestion as to where to go next? I suppose I could read the newspapers for the entire year 1907, but I'd like find a quicker route to his death certificate. Here's what I know in general: Subject __ ___ ____ Francis RULISON Birth __ ___ 1829 NY. Marriage 03 Feb 1854 Deborah C. MEEKER Son: c__ ___ 1855 Nelson James RULISON; NY. Son: c__ ___ 1857 Elisha S. RULISON; NY. Daughter: c__ ___ 1859 Alice Sarah RULISON; NY. Census __ ___ 1860 Deborah C. MEEKER; Conklin, Broome Co., NY. Milit-Beg 16 Jul 1862 Conklin, Broome Co., NY; enlisted as a musician, served in Co B 137th NY infantry regiment. Milit-End 14 May 1865 Muster out Milit-Note Jan 1866 Francis Rulison listed in Conklin Forks, Broome County, NY receiving a pension of $24 per month for a gun shot wound to the right thigh since January 1866 on certificate # 56,779. Daughter: c __ ___ 1866 Frances RULISON ; NY. Daughter: __ ___ 1869 Lois A. RULISON ; NY Census: 14 Jul 1870 Deborah C. MEEKER; Conklin, Broome Co., NY. Son: 01 Aug 1874 Ralph W. D. RULISON; Conklin, Broome Co., NY; Census: __ ___ 1880 Deborah C. MEEKER; Conklin, Broome Co., NY. Death __ ___ 1907 Burial 16 Sep 1910 Floral Park Cemetery, Johnson City, Broome Co., NY; Section G, lot 41. Any leads or suggestions would be appreciated. I have quite a bit on the Meaker/Meeker line and the Rulison family in Broome County that I can share. Bob

    1. Walter Whitbeck
    2. Milquet
    3. Hi everyone, I am looking for more Walter Whitbeck information. WALTER WHITBECK I was probably born in Holland. He married ESTHER UNKNOWN (possibly VanTwilliger?). He immigrated to Albany County, NY. WALTER WHITBECK II was born 1773 in Albany County, NY. He died 1836 in Chenango, Broome County, NY. He married LYDIA TOWNSEND. She was born 1778. Both are buried in Townsend Cemetery, English Farm, Chenango, NY. Does anyone know where this cemetery is located? I have a note for Walter II that "with his horse and sleigh he moved to Stillwater, now the town of Greene and settled on the farm where A. Dunn lived." WALTER WHITBECK III was born about 1821. He died March 18, 1873, Cohoes, NY. He worked for Daniel Simmons in 1835 as an overseer of the polishing dept. He was a Cohoes, NY town official for many years including: 1853 Assessor, 1856-1857 Trustee 3rd Ward, 1863 Treasurer, 1864 Treasurer, 1870 Alderman 3rd Ward Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks Mary Kay Milquet Green Bay, WI

    1. Re: RECORDS
    2. An additional thought: If anyone is looking for records for Chenango Forks, please note that Chenango Forks is in two counties, Broome and Chenango and is in four towns: Barker, Chenango and Fenton in Broome Cty and Greene in Chenango Cty. Sure makes it crazy for anyone calling me for a Chenango Forks record. First I try to determine where the person lived, then I can point to the correct municipality. Chris, Town Clerk of Barker

    2. Just a correction to Susan's list, which is very helpful: Afton, Greene & Smithville are in Chenango County. Candor, Newark Valley, Nichols and Owego are in Tioga County. Deposit and Hancock are in Delaware County. The Village of Deposit is in Broome and Delaware Counties. Chris, Town Clerk of Barker since 1974, Town Historian since 1988

    1. MERRILL>LINDSAY>TARBOX
    2. jwilley
    3. Hi Everyone in Broome County, I was in your beautiful area for a few hours and did a little research. Thanks to the wonderful people who were so much help. Mary Cable of the Historical Society in Deposit and Shirley Houck at the Clerks Office in Delhi. Alas!! I was not able to stay long enough to really do much good, but did find a few things. Can anyone help me further. I am still searching for informaiton on my JOHN TARBOX FAMILY while in Deposit I learned that his wife DEMARES LINDSAY was the daughter of JAMES LINDSAY and SALLY MERRILL LINDSAY. Sally was born 20 March 1797 in Ticonderoga. She came with her mother and father, SHUBEL MERRILL and JERSHUA JONES, to the area around 1809. Shubal and Jershua lived there until their death. James may have been the son of Peter Lindsay b. 1755 d. 1818 Brattleboro Vt. and his father may have been Daid 1737-1797 (thanks to Cindy) Someone related that there may have been an explosion and that Demares(Demarius) may have been killed. Does anyone have information on this story? I find the John Tarbox family in Sanford in the 1855 records and after that they just disappear. I have been unable to find any record or information leading to the birth or death of John or to the death of Demares (Demarius) I find records of some children by the same names and birthdates living with different people in Susquehanna county in the 1860 Census. John Tarbox may have been born around 1817. He and Demares, according to census records were possibly married around 1840. They had the following children. Sally, George, Charles, Francis, Homer, Henry and John E. I find deeds for a JOHN AND BETSY TARBOX in the area. Could this John have been the father of my John? If anyone has any information on either the TARBOX OR LINDSAY family I would appreciate hearing from you. I have quite a bit on the Merrill family.(Thanks to the good people who have sent me informaiton) Thank your for any help you may be able to give me. Janice in Indiana

    1. Peter Grodevent (Grodevant)
    2. Marilyn Angelo
    3. Donna, death certificates are filed at the town level. Do you know where Peter died? Also, 1884 is rather early for death certificates in NY. I don't remember when the law requiring death certificates was passed, but it was ignored for a long time. You may be lucky though and find out that there is a death certificate for Peter. Donna asked: >Could someone lead me to the address of the county office? I would like to >send for a death cert. of Peter who died May 31,1884. Also would someone be >able to look up an obit on Peter for me. I would pay you for the copy and >your trouble. Thank you. Donna > Marilyn Angelo mangelo@binghamton.edu
