My brother lived in Brooklyn and died at the Battle of Esperance when his ship went down during WWII in 1942 That was six years after the family had moved to Queens. The announcement of his death was in the Long Island Daily Press on the front page with a picture of George and my sister on his last visit home in June 1942. The death was October 12th, but the family only received a telegram around Thanksgiving telling them he had died.
