    3. For those of you with access to Ancestry.com, they just expanded the info they have from the Social Security Death Index. They now have the place of birth and the names of the parents.     3. ​It is not an expansion of the SSDI database. It is a totally different database of applications and claims filed with Social Security. It is a much smaller database than the SSDI, but it contains a lot more genealogy information, including in many cases birthplaces, parents' names, and name changes (e.g., after a marriage). I have located a number of people in the new database who, though dead, are not listed in the SSDI, because they died before the SSDI was established in the early 1960s. Also, though you cannot do searches on maiden names in the SSDI, you can do so in the new database. The name of the new database is "U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007." It's a very useful database. It's helped me break through brick walls for several people I am researching.
