Hi: I am trying to get some information on the life of a Magistrate Judge in Brooklyn or New York City in the 1940s - Charles E. Ramsgate. He was appointed to the bench in 1940 by mayor LaGuardia but that is all I am able to find. Anyone have any ideas as to how I might found out about him and his life???? Any help greatly appreciated. Hi Gladys, I've done a little google searching. There's quite a bit about Ramsgate's cases online. He seemed to have quite a sense of humor on the bench. In the NYT archives, I found that he was appointed to the Domestic Relations Court by Mayor Wagner in 1954. He was a court judge before that time, of course, and very likely was appointed by Mayor LaGuardia. I found an obituary for his 3 year old daughter, Nancy, who died in 1937. At that time, he and his wife had two other children. His mother died two years before in Cos Cob, CT. What I do find strange is that, I haven't found an obituary for him. I not very knowledgable on the court or legal system. Hopefully some other kind person who knows a lot more than I do, will help you out here. In the meantime, my suggestion is that you contact the County Clerk's office in Brooklyn, and perhaps they can steer you in the right direction.
