When searching online, go to the front pages or last few pages of the directory. You can achieve this by choosing an "A" or "Z" surname, and working away from it. If you are using Ancestry.com, you will notice "hits" for an ancestor, that do not appear in the alphabetized list. This usually means that your ancestor's name will appear on that page, perhaps even as an employee not owner, of a company. In this case, you have to scan the whole page for your search name.
