Are all the records that the LDS library have appear on Family Search or do I need to rent the record and search myself. My ancestor Margaret TAFFNER appears in Family Search as being born in Morbach Prussia. None of her brothers, sisters or parents appear on Family Search. I would say order the films. I could be wrong, but I think what shows up in family search is merely what other people have found and deemed relevant to their tree, and then uploaded. It represents just a fraction of the records they've filmed. For instance, if I search on all of my surnames, I find only a NYC marriage record for my great great uncle. (Which was a NYC municipal record, anyhow, not an LDS filmed record.) But in renting the appropriate films, I've found birth and marriage records for him, his siblings, his parents, and so on. I can't speak to the other parts, but "ancestral file" is one component of the search, and they describe it as: "Ancestral File is a collection of genealogical information taken from Pedigree Charts and Family Group Records submitted to the Family History Department since 1978. The information has not been verified against any official records. Since the information in Ancestral File is contributed, it is the responsibility of those who use the file to verify its accuracy."
