A five-car Brooklyn Rapid Transit Brighton Beach line train, just entering the Malbone Street Tunnel (because of this accident, Malbone Street later renamed Empire Boulevard) on the evening of Nov. 1, 1918, derailed, obviously out of control, and the resulting crash killed 97 persons, mostly women, on their way home from work, and injured many more.
