    1. [BKLYN] [NY-IRISH] Irish resource
    2. Hi Folks, There's another rather unique resource for those with ancestors of County Monaghan, yet useful to all searching 19th century Ireland. Title: Melancholy Madness: A Coroner's Casebook by Michelle McGoff-McCANN, 2003 paperback ISBN:1 85635 424 5; Mercier Press. It can be purchased online from Ireland. William Charles WADDELL, Esq. began in 1846, and covered northern Monagahn. Since these were famine days, they appointed Hugh SWANZY, Esq. as coroner to work out of Castleblayney in southern Monaghan. WADDELL, from a wealthy Presbyterian family, kept a journal of cases during his career, 1846-1878, in three volumes. The first and third volumes are missing. A descendant named Jimmy WELLS, saved the 2nd volume covering 861 inquests and inquiries from Jan. 1856 - March 1876. There is a searchable name index in the back of the book. This is the sort of book that anyone of Irish extraction can learn something about the era, culture, inheritance, poorhouses, workhouses, courts, and the preciousness of land ownership and tenancy.
