Thank you Marie, for sharing this information. When I composed my post, I drew upon my journalism background and intentionally documented specifics and locations...in case, someone in the future, were to deny that the terrorist attack of the Unites States of America occurred on 11 September 2001. With the death of newspapers, and the expansion of news communications to hyper-text format, when we who lived it are gone, perhaps someone will read what we've posted and interpret them as eye witness accounts. Who ever expected that someday to be 13 years after the event? and this page has some other options as well. There are tons of things to choose from regarding what category your suggestion falls under. I must say this is nicer than the other ways I have been told of in the past to make suggestions. This one actually worked for me LOL BUT there is no way to submit unless you take a one question survey rating how much you like the website. It is a simple "rate ancestry" on a scale of 1-10 so don't let the survey part throw you off. Here is the link for suggestions: http://www.ancestry.com/cs/suggestions So, if you have things you want to see changed, this seems to be a good way to ask for it. Of course whether we see results may be something totally different LOL but it sure seems better than their attempts in the past of being able to submit suggestions. -- Researching Stephenson/Stevenson, Fleury, Heald, Lindelof, Young, Rubino, Cammarota, Mandracchia, Vaiarelli, Mulhern, Johnson, Haight, Erickson, Munson, Northrup, Sears, Camp, Gunn, Allen, Gorham, Plumb, Beard, Rogers, Eliot, Briscoe, Bradley, Mix, Wilmot, Pritchard, Mew, Stone, Sparke, Bayley, Bailey, Redfield, Redfin, Howland, Tilley, Sturgis, Hinckley, Kirk, Norton, Gerard, and many more...
I have tried several times with people I know are there, but cannot seem to get it to generate results. I need others to test drive this so I know it is just not me...makes sure the record for someone is there to start with on a regular search and then use the narrow search function to try to find them. I am working with Sr VP over there to try and tell her bugs I am finding...but I don't know if this is me or if the narrow search thing just does not work. Please let me know whether it works for you or not. Thx. I quote a post from the NYC Roots site of today. Charles nails it. We are being used as test monkeys. Throw it up against the wall and see what sticks. The whole thing is sickening. _________________________________________________________________________ "One thing that has made it even easier for bad decision-makers to dump poorly developed software releases on the public like this is the preferred software development methodology now called Agile. While it can be decent if the project is managed well and it works great for web-based apps centrally hosted (SaaS), this also enables lazy, poor planner management to fly by the seat of their pants, figuring it out as they go along before dumping a half-baked, poorly researched software update. But, not to worry (says the incompetent management), we'll just come back after the fact with a series of many smaller releases (patches) to fix the mess (that they've created), fix what should have been right the first time before it ever went out the door to the public. In the old Waterfall development days, you had to do really good up-front planning, including nailing down the business requirements and doing expert analysis to develop a good software engineering design because once you launched into the software release development project, to go back and to rework mid-stream was very costly. This forced stakeholders and managers, basically held their feet to the fire, to get this right the first time around, forced them to make decisions and plan. It took a little longer to get the release out but if the project was managed right, including the QA work to make sure all the major bugs were found and fixed before general release, as well as some pilot or beta testing to get live end-user feedback to make the design was solid, functionality was good, etc. Using this feedback loop, any other needed changes were made as needed so when the release was launched, it was usually quite good. No development process is perfect but it all comes down to how well these things are researched, planned and then executed. This Ellis Island update is a prime example of people making decisions in a vacuum to drive an agenda (probably money-driven) and now using us, the end users, as their "test monkeys" to sort out all they should have gotten right the first time around. Get ready for what will likely be many months of a long series or smaller releases to "fix" things but it may never be as good as it was before. Just another classic example of the poor leadership making major decisions and weak, incompetent management running not only big companies that affect many peoples lives but the same thing in government too at all levels...where has the good, wise leadership gone? Who knows... -Charles Marshall"
Glad to hear they're planning to make improvements per genealogists' comments. Seriously, they've wiped everything pre-2010? Pretty sure that's when I did most of my research on their site. I just got a call from Ellis Island and they assured me they are listening to what we have to say and will make changes as fast as they can. If you are on Facebook you can go to the Ellis Island page and post what issues you see so they can get everything fixed. They WANT us to put the site through the paces and try to identify problems we find and post them on Facebook. Please pass this on to all the lists you are on. They know the search function is not working well right now and are working on that. They are also going to make the "list" function (rather than the "postcard" view) easier to find. Unfortunately any people you saved before 2010 are gone...they don't have room to store it all. They had thought that our email addies and sign in info had previously been brought over, but found out they were not...but it will get transferred over. Unfortunately I now have a crazy website assigned password and can find no way to change it... So the good news is they are listening...the bad news is they are not going to give up this new website and the changes that make it not very user friendly. They were advised to combine 4 websites into one which is a big part of why the site is so confusing now. They know the pages on documents are showing up in reverse order and apparently there is nothing they can do to fix that either. I am just glad I found most my folks before these changes, but I do have one person I am trying to find now and don't know if I ever will the way things are going... This may just be one website I don't use at all anymore...but I did not use it a lot before...But I have one person now I am trying to find and these new changes are slowing me down a lot. :-( Have a good day and I hope everyone gets pro-active with posting facebook--that seems to be the best way to contact them right now. Same thing happened to me. I have been trying to log in for 3 days and it won't let me. It won't let me change my password either. How did you get logged in? I don't want to lose my saved files either so I want to log in as usual not with a new account. I have gone to their facebook page and shared my complaints. Also am mailing a letter of complaint to their Board of Directors. How do they take a wonderful web site and make it useless. Another complainant emailed me a copy of the letter she is sending. She said I could share it and/or change it to my own words. If you want it let me know and I will forward it to you. The more complaints they get, the more likely they will change it back to the great site that it was. Dolores In a message dated 9/8/2014 11:51:05 A.M. And the small thumbnails will have Image numbers. You can simply click on any of the other 3 images shown there to see it. If you click on the up arrow, it will show you the previous 4 images on that right-hand side. If you click on the down arrow, it will show you the following 4 images. You could use that to page through the passenger manifest. Barb, here's a bit of what I found: HISTORICAL INFORMATION Calverton National Cemetery is located in eastern Long Island between the towns of Manorville and Riverhead in Suffolk County. When the National Cemetery System constructed Calverton National Cemetery in 1978, the cemetery became the third national cemetery to be located on Long Island. The other national cemeteries situated on Long Island are Cypress Hills National Cemetery, in Brooklyn, N.Y., which was established in 1862 and Long Island National Cemetery, in Farmingdale, N.Y., established in 1936. I looked for my grandparents on Ancestry and they were found (just where they have always been) arriving on the CALIFORNIA in May 1901 [image 549; lines 11-13] tabbing through the rest of the CA there are 108 images. The last 9 pages [images 648-657] are for the detained aliens. My grandparents and uncle are on the last image/page of detainees. Going back to the Ellis Island site they appear on the CA [image 285] Today there are 4 thumbnails and arrows. Going to the end of the CA [image 313] there is only 1 page for the detained aliens. EI site only has 28 images to the end of the CA then starts with the BARBAROSSA. The "old" EI site had the missing pages. On both sites there are images of the Capt signing the arrival. Somewhere EI dropped a whole bunch of pages. I did send them an email to ask what happened to the other pages. OK, I looked at my 1901 passenger manifest and now it has the thumbnails to scroll through the list. I didn't go all the way to the Detained Aliens because it was hard to read the pages. That's on my "to-do" list for later today. Dear Friends, I found the site for the National Cemeteries Administration but cannot find the date that NY cemeteries opened for burials. Does anyone know about Calverton, Long Island National, Cypress Hills Albany Rural Appreciate any leads. Barb
Albany Rural is limited to Albany County. This cemetery itself is over 150 years old (opened 1844 for general public of City of Albany) - opened to soliders of Albany 1862, closed 1897, only 0.16 acre for the purpose. Bath National - open (opened Dec 25, 1879) Cypress Hills National is closed to any burials. Opened 1862 Calverton National - open (opened 1978, largest of all national cemeteries) Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National - open (116th, 6th in New York, opened 9 July 1999) Long Island National - cremation only (opened 1936) Woodlawn National - opened 1861, oldest David Samuelsen On 9/8/2014 12:04 PM, mizscarlettny via wrote: > > Dear Friends, > > I found the site for the National Cemeteries Administration > > but cannot find the date that NY cemeteries opened for burials. > > Does anyone know about > Calverton, > Long Island National, > Cypress Hills > Albany Rural > > Appreciate any leads. > > Barb > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NYBROOKLYN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
Great point, Diane. Obviously they did not look at other models. I found some ships manifests on Olive Tree, but all the ads on it make it hard to follow. Great info there though. I tested your site and it is different and you can go through the whole pass manifest but slowly. I had passed the info on to two other lists and another researcher also had a problem leaving a response. Anyone firgured out how to do it from the web site?
