Hi Jack, and thanks for posting those most interesting details. Folks have written me with these questions> Tammany membership more years than 1894 Manhattan? Tammany membership in Brooklyn? We can't forget to search books, and periodicals, not just online links. As more and more records are being transcribed, we may not be able to view original documents the way we can today. I found that 1894 Tammany link accidentally while searching a family surname. BTW I also found another ancestor, a seventeen yr old, who made medical history in a book from 1880. A simple way to search books online is at Google.com/books. If anyone has other methods, please share. Barb -----Original Message----- From: jacklangton jacklangton@aol.com Hi Barb, I haven't even scratched the surface and all I can say is WOW! One of the first names I noticed was Col. Jacob Ruppert Jr, from 91st St. & 3rd Ave, in Manhattan. It was the old Ruppert Brewery, I used to ride past it almost every day on the 3rd Ave. El, it's huge copper vats on magnificent display through gigantic windows, the sharp tang of not-quite-fully processed beer hanging on the wind from 86th St. to 96th St. The Colonel went on to become owner of the NY Yankees baseball team. Wonder if there's more Tammany lists from other years. Thanks for posting. Jack Langton

It is with deep sadness that I share the passing of New York City Fire Department's [NYFD] f i n e s t, Howard Bischoff, Robert Leaver and Daniel Heglund on Monday, 22 September 2014, from illnesses attributed to their personal sacrifices for strangers, the morning that Islamic terrorists attacked the United States of America. May God bless them. May God comfort their families. With thanks, from all New Yorkers, Barb http://www.aol.com/article/2014/09/25/3-fdny-members-die-same-day-due-to-9-11-related-illnesses/20967748/?ncid
Dear David, ? I read your posts online about WILLS & Probate records. ? Last week I drove to Goshen NY in search of a WILL or Letter of Administration for Irish immigrant, a resident farmer, Patrick McGHAN [family also spelled McGANN/McGAHAN and deriv.], who died between 1875 and 1880.?In 1880 the wife Rebecca is listed as a widow. ? After a thorough search of the Index Books, I found no?records pertaining to him. ? The farm was certainly valuable, and by 1880 his son ran it. ? What would you suggest that I search next??Before Patrick's move to Orange County, he served in the Civil War?and resided in Ossining, Westchester, New York. ? Is it possible that his WILL was probated in another county?? I don't have an OBIT or DC, although I certainly tried finding both. ? Thank you for your advice, Barb.
I'm seeking descendants of the WIGTON family who began with Annie and John WIGTON in New York City. They raised their large family in Brooklyn, and died there. Please email me offlist. Barb

I love the photoduplication. It's fast, and I love getting the info asap. I just make notes about what cert I ordered - the person, with the cert # , etc to keep track. You could do a print screen and save your order. I know what you mean about having to enter personal info more than once, but my browser remembers the info and I only have to type the 1st letter/number. This is the new website: https://familysearch.org/ask/photoduplication This new site is very confusing because #1 - only one cert could be ordered with each request.....so to reach the 5 allowed each month, I had to complete the personal info 5 times. #2 - There is no way to make oneself a copy of the documents requested which makes it hard to track things and follow up as needed. Dick Eastman referred to *a site,* but not by name. This was around last Wednesday. Those responding took guesses at what site he meant, then bemoaned the imagined sites. Actually, the responses bordered on humorous. LDS/Family Search has a wider expanse of indexed records then ever before and of course someone had to detail their dissatisfaction. It seems that some searchers expect to plug in a first and given name then be directed to complete "tree" of five or so generations. Responders complained about 5-8 sites! They should have been around in the good ole early days online, when you could barely locate any woman, and were directed to search for related men aka Heads of Households. Better yet, when searched using dial up! Then, it could take you two hours to completely transcribe one family in one census.
