    2. The reason, it seems, that your cursor keeps jumping around when you look at a manifest is ----- they did that on purpose - to prevent anyone from copying the manifest or any part of the manifest.....IMHO. Hold your mouse steady and move around the manifest slowly to review info you are looking for. According to other recent emails, we've been told that it will take up to 6 months to restore our 'saved' files. Other emails believe that these saved files are gone forever. That's about what I've learned. 3. I was expecting this. Clarification...the borders of France and German "as we know them today," AND as Ancestry incorrectly labels them in the 19th century. 3. Another great book regarding American immigrants to NYC in general is "How the Other Half Lives" by era photojournalist by Jacob Riis. It is loaded with photographs. This book dedicates a whole chapter to German cigar makers. At one time there were 8,000 in NYC. LINK to Immigration Info> http://www.ancestry.com/wiki/index.php?title=Overview_of_Immigration_Research Yet another book about growing up immigrant in and poor in NYC is Luc Sante's "Low Life." If you don't own more than three genealogical and photographic books, you're not serious. Barb

    1. [BKLYN] TODAY: German American History Day
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. In 1987 U.S. President Ronald Regan proclaimed October 6th German American History Day which honors settlers to what became the USA since October 6, 1683. Those of us with German ancestors, whose descendants were born in the United States long before The Great War and World War II, may know about the prejudiced climate that our people faced due to these wars. Until I researched my family genealogy, my living paternal side always told us that we were Holland-Dutch. Excerpted from Regan's proclamation> "The United States has embraced a vast array of German traditions, institutions, and influences. Many of these have become so accepted as parts of our way of life that their ethnic origin has been obscured. For instance, Christmas trees and Broadway musicals are familiar features of American society. Our kindergartens, graduate schools, the social security system, and labor unions are all based on models derived from Germany. "German teachers, musicians, and enthusiastic amateurs have left an indelible imprint on classical music, hymns, choral singing, and marching bands in our country. In architecture and design, German contributions include the modern suspension bridge, Bauhaus, and Jugendstil. German-American scientists have helped make the United States the world's pioneer in research and technology. The American work ethic, a major factor in the rapid rise of the United States to preeminence in agriculture and industry, owes much to German-Americans' commitment to excellence." To date, Germans are the largest immigrant group in the United States of America. Barb

Two years ago while visiting my family, my husband and I had the privilege of welcoming home our WWII vets from that area from their visit to Washington DC. A band played, we all stood with large flags and greeted these men and some women as they came into the terminal. Many of them cried and said they weren't greeted like this when they returned from the war. My husband a Vietnam Vet was wearing a baseball cap with Navy on it and as he saluted a Navy vet from WWII who happened to be wearing his hat from boot camp, this man saluted him right back and said thank you because you served too.
