    1. [BKLYN] RC Church Question
    2. Sheila MacAvoy Block via
    3. Barb, There are 2 St Patrick Churches that I know of, one in Bay Ridge and the other, now closed, on Kent Ave in Bed Sty. The Bay Ridge St Pat's was organized in 1854 and is still in operation. The Kent Ave St Pat's merged with St Lucy to form St Lucy/St Pat's. That happened a few years back, I think in the 1970s. The current records are supposed to be in the new parish Mary of Nazareth. Merger of St Lucy/St Pat's with Mary of Nazareth, 41 Adelphi Street, was effective January 31, 2011. The name of the parish is Mary of Nazareth, but the name of the church at 41 Adelphi Street is Sacred Heart. It is about a mile west of St. Patrick's. Sheila Santa Barbara CA

    1. [BKLYN] New Irish Emigrants glean $$$ support from Ireland
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. REPRINT today: The Irish Government is to provide more than $2.2 million (€1.8m) to organizations which support vulnerable Irish emigrants in the United States, Minister for the Diaspora Jimmy Deenihan has announced. Speaking in New York, where he is meeting with Irish community and business groups, the Minister said, “I am delighted to announce the award of Emigrant Support Programme grants to 34 organizations in the US, totaling over €1.8 million ($2.3m) for 2014-2015. This funding will support projects which address the needs of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable Irish emigrants. It will enable Irish emigrants and Irish community organizations to access vital local services as healthcare, education, and housing. We are also funding community-focused services such as the Irish Heritage Club, Seattle which encourage closer links between Irish communities abroad and Ireland, to the benefit of both." The funding is part of the Emigrant Support Programme (ESP), which is managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. This year’s allocation is an increase of 7% on 2013 levels. The largest single recipients are the Irish International Immigration Centre in Boston $256,899 (€206,626), the Emerald Isle Immigration Centre in New York $192,281 (€154,686) and the Chicago Irish Immigrant Support organization $183,808 (€147,862). These organizations serve as valuable welfare and social hubs and advice providers for Irish emigrants and communities in the United States. They provide a range of much-needed social services, such as counseling on health, social and financial issues, and impressive social and educational programs which help new immigrants integrate into life in the US. Minister Deenihan said, “The announcement last month of $15.5 million (€12.5m) in next year’s budget to support emigrants and engage with the diaspora worldwide is a significant achievement. It means we can maintain the level of Emigrant Support Programme funding and we have secured an additional €1 million for new diaspora projects and initiatives.” Thanking those who run the centers for their work the Minister noted, “Of course, support would not be possible without the ongoing, dedicated work of the Irish centers and other organizations here in New York and throughout the US. On behalf of the Irish Government, I thank you for your important work in supporting our community here. Thank you also for your part in promoting Irish culture and preserving our heritage in the US.” Cultural and heritage grants of over $385,350 (€310,000) are also included as part of this round of grants. This includes a grant of some $124,306 (€100,000) to the Irish Cultural Centre of New England, while the Irish Repertory Theatre in New York will also receive some $58,061 (€46,710). http://www.irishcentral.com/news/politics/Irish-emigrants-in-the-US-to-receive-22m-support-says-Minister-for-Diaspora.html

    3. Regarding the middle name BONNER. You might consider, although it is a long shot, that the name was a misreading of the given name of Ostfriesian origin of BONNE. In my husband's research in Northern Germany, the part right next to Netherlands, the given name for boys in his family was sometimes BONNE. His adoptive father had such a name, when he came to the US it was interpreted as BONNIE which he didn't like much so he went by his middle name ARNOLD. Just a wild card. Sheila Santa Barbara CA

    1. [BKLYN] Edward and Effie (TOOMES) HUTCHINSON, NY and MA
    2. Ms Betty Fredericks via
    3. Hello, I just wanted to add a few tidbits of information about the extended HUTCHINSON family.    As I've already mentioned, the 3 siblings were part of the large farm in what became Winchester, MA.    Three siblings remained;  three moved to NYC, then Brooklyn.    It seems the 3 families in Brooklyn remained close, but they also seemed to remain close to their relatives in Winchester.    And, I'm thinking they already had "money" when they moved to NY, and they made "more" in NY. Summarizing, the oldest brother, John Bonner HUTCHINSON,* b~1817 in MA, and his wife, Ruthy (WYMAN), had 3 children.    A son, John,  a son, Edward, and a daughter, Sarah.    With the help of researchers, I found out that Sarah married Walter WELLINGTON from MA.   He seems to have moved to Brooklyn around Age 30 while single. ..   The son, John, married Gertrude  (unknown), and they only had daughters.    Census records say Gertrude was born in VT.    The son, Edward, married Effie (TOOMES) in NY, and they had a son, John, and a daughter, Sarah. In 1898, in NY, Sarah married Louis CHASE from Cambridge, MA.    Shortly after 1900,  Edward and Effie's family moved to Cambridge.    One possible reason is that their son was to attend .. Harvard University.    In 1905 John B. Hutchinson  (b1880) graduated with an AB.    So far, I'm not seeing any indication that he married.   But I'm not finding him after 1920.  .. Unfortunately,  Louis and Sarah CHASE were in a terrible car / train accident near Worcester, MA.   She died the next day at the hospital, and he was seriously injured.   He might have been disabled for a few yrs., but I believe he remarried later.    So far I'm not seeing any mention of children for the couple. Edward and Effie lived to see Age 70 in Cambridge, and they are buried at the Mount Auburn Cemetery.   I'm hoping to visit the cemetery to see if I can find out who is buried with them.     ** By the way, the marriage announcement for Louis and Sarah made it to the "NY Times."   And, it mentioned the names of Sarah's cousins and other bridesmaids. Betty              (near Lowell, MA) *One of the things which I never tried to find out is why the oldest child of  Thomas and Betsey (HOMER) HUTCHINSON was given the middle name, Bonner.   Either Thomas or Betsey's families must have known a BONNER family. **Edward's cousin from the farm families in Winchester is also buried in that famous cemetery.   He was Dr. Leslie Loring HUTCHINSON, a Podiatrist in Cambridge.

    1. [BKLYN] inquest/death cert question
    2. Judi via
    3. Hi everyone... I found the death cert # for Ann Conlon on italiangen. It matched the 5/21/1873 burial time given to me by Holy Cross, but there was no corresponding film # to be found, so I was unable to ask the LDS folks for the document. I had another family member whose death cert was misfiled, but before I found it, HC told me there had to be one, as no one in that time period would be buried without a death cert. The wonderful LDS people went on to find a document that seems to be the same Ann Conlan, but it is dated May 23, 1874 - a year and 2 days later. The document isn't a death cert, however, it's an account of an inquest, with a Verdict of Jurors...I've never come across anything like this. Is this inquest doc in place of a death cert? Thanks for guidance, Judi

    1. Re: [BKLYN] Ellis Island Website
    2. Joyce Presnall via
    3. You can still copy a file with your snipping tool although it does not come out crystal clear. When you use your snipping tool go all the way around the box, do not let your cursor touch the actual document...you'll still need to read the enlarged doc with the stupid cursor that goes backwards and jumps all over, but you can get a copy of it. Ellis Island has a facebook page and I recommend registering complaints there. I worked with Peg, the VP for the Ellis Island org and they have NO intention of making the manifest any better, they want you to buy their ridiculously priced copies and they are VERY touchy about any criticism of that. I suggested many changes to Peg and some have been made but the most important one is a GOOD FAQ which they had not done the last time I looked. It takes some hunting around but they do have some decent tools now but without a decent FAQ many folks are confused by the new site. The site USED to be halfway decent...I think they have made it worse JMHO...and when you ask about something that is supposed to be there and it is not they tell you what plate # it is on...well that does no good if there is no way to search for a document by plate #. Perhaps if enough of us refuse to buy their $50 copies they will get reasonable. I suggested an email version for a cheaper price and they got very hostile about that idea...It is quite simple...this is ALL about money so unless it hits their pocket book nothing will change. They claim they have lots of sales of those things...but I don't know WHO would pay $50 for a darn manifest. Luckily ancestry.com does have a lot of those manifests also...sometimes the date is just slightly different. I imagine the manifest copies are coming from 2 different sources as on one I only found a few kids and on the ancestry.com one I found for one day later it had all the kids... SO if you run into something on Ellis check ancestry.com and see if they have a copy...the date may be a few days difference...I think the one I found that way was one day different. Squeeky wheels get the most grease :-) Squeek away on facebook or by email... This entire thing is a REAL cluster...and it is $ running their decisions. 1. [BKLYN] WELLINGTON / HUTCHINSON connection (Cont'd.)
    2. Ms Betty Fredericks via
    3. Hi again, I got away from the computer for the morning and remembered I forgot to say that I found out brand-new information about the HUTCHINSON family over the weekend.    John B. and Ruthy (WYMAN) HUTCHINSON had 3 children, 2 sons and a daughter.    I already mentioned that their son, John, had married a Gertrude (?), bVT, and had 2 daughters with her.   But, he seems to have died young.   I don't know if their daughter, Sarah, ever married. But, what I found out accidentally over the weekend was that their other son, Edward B. HUTCHINSON, and his wife, Effie, and their children, moved back to MA.    Soon after 1900 they moved to Cambridge, MA, and had an active life there.   And they lived long lives.    Their son, John,  seems to have never married, and always lived with them.   Their daughter married but died in her 40's. And, because of that finding, I found out that there was a 3rd  HUTCHINSON Farmhouse in Winchester, MA, that I did not know about.    Technically it was a WYMAN - HUTCHINSON house fairly near my ancestors' HUTCHINSON house. By the way, from my new source,  I found out Effie's maiden name was probably TOOMIS or LOOMIS ..   I can't find my handwritten note at this second. Betty            (near Lowell, MA) (I was told earlier this month that the Cambridge Public Library (MA) has put the archives of the weekly newspaper, the "Cambridge Chronicle," on-line.   I searched HUTCHINSON and found it mentioned more than 500 times.   I didn't find what I initially looked for,  but found .new. things I mentioned above.)

    1. [BKLYN] Walter WELLINGTON, b1844 MA, to NY 1880 - connection to John HUTCHINSON
    2. Ms Betty Fredericks via
    3. Hello, For ~5 yrs. I've had a small mystery to figure out.    My research of 20 yrs. started out on the KIDDER ancestors, but also included the related HUTCHINSON ancestors.   I descend from George HUTCHINSON, arriving in 1630 MA.   His descendants were always on a large farm in what became Winchester, MA, from 1720's to 1950's.    In the early 1800's the farm was in Woburn, MA.    During the 1850's there were 6  HUTCHINSON siblings, and at that time, 3 of the siblings left MA and moved to NYC and Brooklyn, NY.    I've mentioned them many times before.   They were John B. HUTCHINSON and his 2 married sisters, all became merchants. The mystery involves "how"  a Walter L. WELLINGTON, b1844 MA, was related to them.     The 1880 census has him living in the home of William and Elizabeth (HUTCHINSON) DODGE and some of their daughters.    He is listed as 30 and single.    ..  He must have married within 2 yrs.,  as in 1900, he is listed as a widower, and has his 16-yr-old daughter,  Ruth WELLINGTON, b1883 NY, with him. Also in 1900, he has a Mrs. Gertrude HUTCHINSON, a widow, and her 2, unmarried daughters, Ruth and Margaret, 27 and 24.    She at the time was the daughter-in-law of  John and Ruthy (WYMAN) HUTCHINSON of Brooklyn.   This census page says that Gertrude as the sister-in-law of Walter WELLINGTON.   And the daughters are listed as his nieces. In 1910, Gertrude is living in Manhatten with one of her daughters.    In 1910 Walter is living at a hotel with his 2nd wife.    He is now 76, and the page says he had been married to  "Reela" WELLINGTON for 8 yrs.   I cannot read her age.   Since I can't find them in 1920,  I can guess that Walter died in NY between 1910 and 1920. I tried finding Walter's family back in MA, but wasn't successful.   There were several Walter WELLINGTON's born in MA during 1840's, but none match up to the one who went to NYC.   ...   My HUTCHINSON / CROSBY ancestors have a strong connection to a  WELLINGTON family of Belmont, MA.   But, that is not helping me right now. Thank you for your time. Betty                (near Lowell, MA) (on Lists and Boards for 14 yrs.;  now an Admin for 11 Lists and 5 Boards)
