Re: What paper may have the obituary of a woman who lived in Brooklyn an moved to Queens. To Peggy and Other Listers. My brother lived in Brooklyn and died at the Battle of Esperance when his ship went down during WWII in 1942 That was six years after the family had moved to Queens. The announcement of his death was in the Long Island Daily Press on the front page with a picture of George and my sister on his last visit home in June 1942. The death was October 12th, but the family only received a telegram around Thanksgiving telling them he had died. Pauline Salmon San Diego
I'm trying to locate on obit for my great grandmother who was a long time resident of 75 Stanhope St, Brooklyn and spent her later years in Queens. I found her date of death on GGG as 30 May 1942. What I would like to know is in what newspaper(s) would her obit be posted? Also, how many days after her death would the notification most likely show up in the papers? Her name was Josephine Schaefer and at the time of her death she was a widow and was living in Queens on 215th St with her daughter Mary and son-in-law, Leander Ring. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Peggy

Dear Friends, How do you interpret the governmental title "Minister for the Diaspora?" -----Original Message----- REPRINT today: The Irish Government is to provide more than $2.2 million (€1.8m) to organizations which support vulnerable Irish emigrants in the United States, Minister for the Diaspora Jimmy Deenihan has announced. Speaking in New York, where he is meeting with Irish community and business groups, the Minister said, “I am delighted to announce the award of Emigrant Support Programme grants to 34 organizations in the US, totaling over €1.8 million ($2.3m) for 2014-2015. This funding will support projects which address the needs of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable Irish emigrants. It will enable Irish emigrants and Irish community organizations to access vital local services as healthcare, education, and housing. We are also funding community-focused services such as the Irish Heritage Club, Seattle which encourage closer links between Irish communities abroad and Ireland, to the benefit of both." The funding is part of the Emigrant Support Programme (ESP), which is managed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. This year’s allocation is an increase of 7% on 2013 levels. http://www.irishcentral.com/news/politics/Irish-emigrants-in- the-US-to-receive-22m-support-says-Minister-for-Diaspora.html

Dear Friends, If you want to find a ZIP for a family address, go here> http://www.zip-codes.com/free-zip-code-tools.asp Enter the address and the ZIP and other data will surface. For example, Latitude and Longitude which are being used in today's research. Barb
Dear Friends, It's helpful to your research if you understand exactly where your ancestors lived. Run every address that you have through Google, and capture the ZIP. For Manhattan, enter address plus New York, New York. For Brooklyn, enter address plus Brooklyn, New York. ZIP codes can lead you to family neighborhoods, churches, and Wards. Barb
Dear Friends, When you are seeking assistance with a specific ancestor, whether from a list or when working with a genealogist, it really helps if you cut and paste *known* records into your post, like this Manhattan Marriage Certificate info> Clark Annie K Aug 29 1876 5221 (1876) Manhattan 1562178 Hannoway, Samuel This MC says more in a succinct way, even when surnames are misspelled. PLUS+ You can also use these transcribed vital records in a folder online, for easy retrieval of information. Barb
Thanks to all who replied to my query, Barb, Sheila, Donald and Patricia. This is the first time I have posted to this group, though I have received the posts on a daily basis for a couple of years. It is obviously a very helpful group. I do have the death record for John on Apr 1,1895 but it does not give parent's names. That may have started later. I will check out some of the other suggestions. I have used Steve Morse's site and found it very helpful. A lot of work has gone into that site. Your suggestions have been most appreciated. If it's any help, there are four public trees on Ancestry for John Morrow and family. One notes that he was living in Scotland in 1871, which of course would need to be confirmed. In another one of the trees, his wife Agnes is said to have been born in Co. Down and her parents' names are provided; there seems to be documentation for this. Wish I had this list when I muddled through my first attempt at finding some relatives who live in Brooklyn. The Family in question is John Morrow born about 1841 in Ireland. Died 1 Apr 1895 age 54 - Sources: Letter from his sister-in-law and Green Wood Cemetery Records. At the time of his death he was living at 54 India street, Brooklyn. The cemetery record states he died in M E Hospital. The only hospital I could find that might fit that is Mount Eden in the Bronx, no longer in existence. I would like to find a death certificate for him, hoping it may give his parent's names. I would also like to find his marriage certificate to Agnes McClurg (lots of different spellings on birth certificates of children - McLeod, McLoud, McCloudet, McCloud.) Using the 1880 and 1900 census I find the first child Jane was born between 1867 and 1870. Also according to the census his wife came to the US from Ireland in 1865. Nancy, On the Italian Genealogy web site (IGG), the records show a certificate exists for John Morrow who died April 1, 1895 in Kings County. The Cert # is 5909. This record might give you a better indication of the hospital where he died. Possibly also his parents' names. You can get this record from the Municipal Archives either by walking in, by mail or FAX. You can also get a copy of the record from a Family History Library by ordering the film which pertains to this name, date, and Borough. There are no Morrow births on IGG for the time period you indicate. It was not unusual for parents to fail filing a record. Baptismal certificates may be your only recourse Sheila

This is true well into the 1890s and not all clerks at NYC's Department of Records know it.
