Barbie asked: For those of you who have viewed film, I wonder could you please share your experiences on what else was learned from the films (or not learned) best and worst scenarios. I ordered many of the photocopy docs from LDS, but recently ordered my first film - a marriage record. All of the original record was included, 2 sides. It didn't contain any real surprises - but it had names of witnesses, and place of marriage, so I have more than the date to go on. The LDS center by me is run by volunteers. As suggested, I called ahead to make sure someone would be there. When I got there, it was busy, but someone took the time to show me how to view the film, and how to email a copy to myself to print at home. They will print it for you for a small fee. If you don't live near an LDS center, many libraries act as centers, and you can have your film sent there. If you put in your zip code, all the possible locations around you will come up. Judi
Barb, According to some the articles I found, records stored there include medical records, court records, and children's services records. Original BMDs from Muni Arch are stored in Bkln, but unsure if it is this warehouse. On the rare occasion when a film at the Archives is too damaged to make a clear copy, they will obtain original from the warehouse. We are living in an uber materialistic society of ultimate greed. Period. Every step we take is circumscribed by money mongers...homes, cars, food, goods, etc. No scruples. LDS sells OUR records. They're not the only ones. The Roman Catholic church where I was married had to sell it's records to Ancestry, as intimate and exact details of my marriage are on Ancestry! Did I sign a waiver to a "private" aka Catholic "sacramental" marriage to the parish? No! [Hey folks, if you don't believe me, just research yourself. Guaranteed shock.] Whatever happened to the basic genealogy "rule" that you shrouded details about living people? The only place that you see this "courtesy" perpetuated is on family trees that were submitted by those who respect the living. Five years ago, both my parents were old and living in a retirement community in FL. While they were ALIVE, Ancestry provided their ages and addresses online...oh...paid Ancestry subscription! We are not talking about newspaper Obits folks. But, their NYC Marriage circa 1950 is still not accessible online and limited to them or children by the NYC Marriage Bureau. No NYC Marriage from approximately 1950 forward is available online or in person to investigators. AND, most of these folks are long dead. So, who do list as the list as the defendant in a suit, Ancestry aka The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Church or the Roman Catholic church responsible for the "sacrament" of marriage? Probably both. Barb =============== From: buffycat@juno.com via ny-irish@rootsweb.com While Familysearch may tout itself as fully free, in reality it has sold off large holdings of its content and records to others. Years back I used to find records on this site unavailable anywhere else, they have since disappeared into a black hole. The only proof I have of such records is that I fortunately printed them out.
My great-grandparents lived at 89 Stanhope Street for many years, including the year asked about. Their obituaries appeared in the New York Times. Their last name was Weigand. The following link shows the index entry for the Naturalization Petition filed by my husband's great-uncle: <http://interactive.ancestry.com/7733/imusany1824_1175-00372/2445378> Next to the Petition No., and above his signature, there is an A.R.R. number listed. Does this number by any chance refer to a passenger arrival record? I have yet to find this family in any passenger list. I do know from another great-uncle's naturalization petition that they came through Hamburg approximately 1891, and that they were from the Bialystok/Grodno area. I also know from other records that the surname was originally something else, closer to Saminowitch or something like that. If this A.R.R. number by any chance identifies a passenger arrival record, how can I follow up on this? -- Thanks, Mary

January 27, 1945 On this date in world history, the Soviet army liberated the prisoners of Auschwitz. Tomorrow, is the 70th anniversary. Today, many survivors gathered in Poland to speak for those who lost their voices and their lives, by the torment and atrocities of Adolph Hitler and the Nazi regime. Some of those survivors were mere children...here's more about them today.> http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2926645/Survivors-visit-Auschwitz-day-ahead-70th-anniversary.html Today, as our news sources decline in numbers and quality, and trained, unbiased journalists are replaced by shoddy, sensationalists spewing forth news bleeps that seek poll voters, may we remember to tell the truth to younger generations.
