Pardon my interruption... Will the woman from Campbell Hall, NY please contact me offlist. Thank you, Barb
Dear Friends, Yesterday I transcribed Mary JOHNSON's death certificate at NYC Municipal Archives, for a friend who *thought* it might be her Irish-Catholic ancestor. Mary was African-American, hailed from Connecticut, and was not my friend's family. Will someone repost it on a CT mailing list? This is one example of why searcher's can't assume that a name from a death index is an ancestor. Remember folks, you are dealing with New York City...historically the American port that processed the most immigrants. Millions! Immigrants who evacuated their homelands to merely survive. Immigrants who escaped starvation from an Irish potato blight, or a Russian Czar, or another Germanic war, or Armenian genocide, or the Italian eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Once you have different cultures living together, you have inter marriage, then surnames that no longer resemble the original immigrants of 1830. With a city as historically rich as New York still is, it was altered by the thousands even in route to settle in other places. This is all to say that: You can't judge a surname by it's index. Barb
Thanks Larry. This newish computer came with Windows 8.0, which is a huge bad joke. I know they do this to prompt us to by new machines. Anayway, since 8.0 had many faults they offered free 8.1. I had to re vamp my machines and add 8.1 in. It's since then I can't get on stevemorse....pain in my neck! Ray, I have the same version as you do...35.0.1...and have no trouble getting into Family Search. There must be something else going on and I would certainly contact FHL as they are quite helpful. Sheila

Hi Ray, I use Firefox and have no problems. I don't know which generation it is but it updates itself continuously. When I go to the site, I click on the "Search" feature and get to where I need to. I have never had to contact this site but I bet if you go to the LDS Salt Lake site via Google, you can find assistance. They usually quick and responsive. I hope this helps. Ray, I did look at 1865 census and Redmond and Bridget had 9 children. The sister-in-law Rose, 18 yr may be wife of Michael 30 yr. Both have married checked off. Found Redmond death b.1793-d.June 17, 1869. He is listed in Find A Grave with obit. Also found them in 1855 Census, Ward 12. Redmond is listed as Rodman, and Ross listed as Rofs 23 yrs., George 28, Michael 20, Bridget 17, daughter-in-law Maria 21, Grandchild Elizabeth 8 mos. This was also found on Ancestry. Hope this helps. There are three nephews, a niece, a sister-in-law and a boarder. Maybe they just got off the boat but if so, I can't find them. I would greatly appreciate any help. Great and thorough points Gail. I'm unsure if most people know these other aspects to Find A Grave. l) The US Army/Vets and other organizations post the names of deceased on it, with just enough details to post it. 2) There is a lot of competition within the FAG community; posters count how many submissions they make. It's become a kind of game. Find A Grave is a great tool, but I only view it as clues to a death, until I see a death certificate. Barb -----Original Message----- From: Bob Raynor via nybrooklyn@rootsweb.com I have relatives buried in the Flatlands Dutch Reformed Cemetery in Brooklyn. I went to findagarave website but they only have my g/g grandparents. I have other death certificates for various sons / daughters saying they are buried there. Does anyone know who is in charge & upkeep etc.? As well was there ever published a book with the name of interments? It seems kind of odd to me, if the person took time to go there and record information on findagrave website; which I am grateful for!!! Why wasn't more data recorded of the other burial plots?
The Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church cemetery is part of the two acre grounds of the Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church. The Cemetery is immediately behind the church. It is an active church, and I suggest you telephone them and ask about their cemetery records. Find a grave is a totally volunteer website. Each memorial that is there is created by someone who has enough burial information to start the memorial. Updates are only added as individuals who have updated information notify that volunteer of that information. You can create the memorials for your family that currently do not have find a grave memorial's. You can also notify the current keeper of the memorial of updated information on your great great-grandparents. You could also ask them to transfer ownership to you as you are a direct descendent. I hope this information makes sense and is otherwise helpful.
