    1. [BKLYN] New Data Base - Old Marriage Records
    2. Bill & Cathy McGrath via
    3. Marriage Notices Appearing in Lansingburgh Newspapers 1787 - 1895 An index to 2,712 marriage notices covering 5,424 names that were published in ten different Lansingburgh, New York newspapers from 1787 to 1895 was created by staff at the Troy Public Library in 1938 through 1939. The Troy Irish Genealogy Society was allowed by the Troy Library to scan this book so these important records could be made available on-line for genealogy researchers. To see these records go to the TIGS website - www.troyirish.com - click on PROJECTS and then click on MARRIAGE NOTICES APPEARING IN LANSINGBURGH NEWSPAPERS. Lansingburgh, by the way, for those not in the Capital District Region, was the first chartered village in Rensselaer County and was settled around 1763. In 1900 Lansingburgh became part of the City of Troy, New York. The ten different Lansingburgh newspapers were: American Spy Federal Herald Lansingburgh Advertiser Lansingburgh Chronicle Lansingburgh Courier Lansingburgh Democrat Lansingburgh Gazette Lansingburgh Daily Gazette Lansingburgh Times Northern Centinel Under “RESOURCES” on the TIGS website, www.troyirish.com you will also find an informative article, “Newspapering in Rensselaer County”, which identifies which of the above newspapers are available, on microfilm or hard copy, at the Troy Library. These historical records are extremely important to genealogy researchers as the bulk of the records predate New York’s 1880 law that required reporting of marriages. Outside of the marriage location itself, church, justice of the peace, etc., you will not find these records anywhere else. Most entries show the name of the bride and groom, the residence (city, town, village) for both, date of marriage, names of newspapers that reported the marriage along with the newspaper date, page and column number where you will find the notice in the appropriate newspaper. It is important to note that the residence for the bride and groom is not just Lansingburgh, but may cover all areas of New York State, other States and even foreign countries. While 1,231 of the names showed no indication of residence, those records where the residence was reported are of interest as they show 232 individual cities, towns and villages throughout New York State. In addition, residence of either the bride or groom was identified as being in 33 states other than New York and even in 5 foreign countries. Hopefully you will find some of your ancestors in this new data base or in the almost 300,000 Irish AND Non-Irish names listed in the various transcription projects on the TIGS website. Regards, Bill McGrath TIGS Project Coordinator Clifton Park, NY

    3. I've been hearing about this for a while via the Jewish Gen Discussion Group which gets reports from the Records Preservation and Access Committee (<http://www.fgs.org/rpac/>). As I understand it, the proposed rules only involve access to the most recent 3 years worth of SSDI data; records older than 3 years will continue to be available to the public, though with less data fields available than before. Hopefully that hasn't changed. Dee Dee King has previously gone through the steps to certify, and reported on her experience. That article is available at the following link if you select Volume 4, Issue 3: <http://www.forensicgenealogists.org/resources/newsletter/> -- Mary On 3/15/2015 12:56 PM, mizscarlettny via wrote: > Thanks to Mark Lomax in California for thes heads up on TV tonight! > > We utilize the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) in our research and many have cited > incidents of not being able to find family members in these open records. > > There are two issues here: l) TV tonight &, (2) the future of the SSDI > > # 1) Tonight on "60 Minutes" 7pm eastern, CBS-TV channel 2 in Metro NYC > > The show is addressing large numbers of deceased people who are not listed > in the SSDI, and large numbers of living Americans who are listed in it. > > The 60 Minutes website states that "Errors in the government's Death Master File are > costing taxpayers billions and creating nightmares for those wrongly declared dead." > > # 2) Our access to the SSDI is threatened to end. 3. Thanks to Mark Lomax in California for thes heads up on TV tonight! We utilize the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) in our research and many have cited incidents of not being able to find family members in these open records. There are two issues here: l) TV tonight &, (2) the future of the SSDI # 1) Tonight on "60 Minutes" 7pm eastern, CBS-TV channel 2 in Metro NYC The show is addressing large numbers of deceased people who are not listed in the SSDI, and large numbers of living Americans who are listed in it. The 60 Minutes website states that "Errors in the government's Death Master File are costing taxpayers billions and creating nightmares for those wrongly declared dead." # 2) Our access to the SSDI is threatened to end. The proposal is that select people will certify to access the SSDI by taking an exam. The excuse given is that these SS #s have been stolen. It's no wonder when too many online sources use ours, including department store charge cards. 3. I'm sure all of us have encountered deceased relatives who should have been listed in the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) but were not, and we've wondered why. Well, tomorrow (Sunday, March 15th) "60 Minutes" is going to air a story about the large number of deceased people not listed in the SSDI and the many living people who are listed in the SSDI. According to the "60 Minutes" website, "Errors in the government's Death Master File are costing taxpayers billions and creating nightmares for those wrongly declared dead." The program airs at 7 p.m. ET/PT. Mark Lomax California

    1. Re: [BKLYN] Brooklyn OBIT search?
    2. mmooney17 via
    3. Dear Barb, This is a matter of plodding through each issue searching for the page with obituaries. I started with the issue published on the date of your Annie's death. Newspapers published multiple editions each day, so sometimes there will be an obit in a later edition, even for the date of death. Click on "Add More Info" and enter the date of death. Don't bother with the name data. That will bring up a little picture of a newspaper. Click on it. You can change the pages by clicking on the date and page info in red in the Task and Info Bar above the newspaper. You can do the same thing by clicking on the page tape than runs below the newspaper. Before I do this, I do what you did, I searched for specific names. It is much easier, and sometimes it works. I found it on page 3, 26 May 1886: DIED BURKE - On May 24, at the residence of her parents, 1670 Atlantic av, Brooklyn, ANNIE E. BURKE, aged 17 years. Interment in Calvary Thursday, 27th inst. May she rest in peace. (Irish papers please copy). I checked the subsequent Obit listings in case more information had been added. Sometimes it happens with much more info. Not on this one, sorry. Cheers, Mary Ann ---- mizscarlettny via <nybrooklyn@rootsweb.com> wrote: > > > > Dear Friends. > > Does anyone have suggestions for finding an Obit at the > > Brooklyn Newsstand>http://bklyn.newspapers.com/ ? > > I have these two Brooklyn BURKE interments lists and can't > > find even one OBIT for any of them! > > Looking for >24 MAY 1886 death of Annie B BURKE, age 17 > > taken from DC.
