    1. [BKLYN] GERMAN surnames 101
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. This brief explanation of German surnames is extracted from an email that I received about a Family Tree University program. Perhaps it will help you with your family. Barb Occupational names (also called Ecknahme in German) can be very common and therefore more difficult to trace Many end in -er or -mann Hoffmann Fleischer Gerber Schiffmann Mueller Other suffixes are -macher or -hauer Rademacher Schneider Eisenhauer Fenstermacher These names were most likely to be "translated" into new names in America such as Ironcutter (for Eisenhauer) or Tailor (for Schneider) Geographic (place or feature names) can be specific or general: General examples: Bachmann ("man from the creek") Bergman ("man from the mountain") Dieffenbach ("deep creek") Specific examples Anspach and Marburger (from towns and cities) Schweitzer (from Switzerland) Specific place-based surnames usually came about after the individual moved from the area -- therefore, the place usually isn't an immigrant's home village, but may be near the village. Characteristic names Examples (with their meanings) include: Lang (long) Kopf (head) Weiss (white) Braun (brown) Klein (short) Altmann (old man) Gross (big) Nase (nose) Teufel (devil) Unruh (restless) Patronymic names, drawing from the father's first name: Used especially in Schleswig-Holstein and Ostfriesland, as Scandinavian patronymics were, until the 1800s Examples: Martin, Friedrichs, Jakobsohn, Felty

    1. [BKLYN] FACT: Ancestry invading personal privacy
    2. mizscarlettny via
    3. Thank you for posting this Patricia. Living people in their 80s get scammed because of such details that Ancestry releases that invades privacy. That's one example that what I'm talking about. Barb -----Original Message----- From: Patricia Petrizzo vpat4gen@hotmail.com I found dates of birth as well as address histories for me, my husband, and my son (all living) on Ancestry's databases for Public Records. Tech services told me the info likely came from voter registration lists and other public records. In our state, voter registration lists are public records and you can even purchase electronic versions for a nominal fee and post them online. All legal. Many local and state records have always been public but you would have to travel to a county courthouse to research and transcribe the info. Unfortunately, not any more. In fact, in Florida, many marriage (and other) records are viewable at county courthouse websites (free), along with all the personal details therein. In any event, with a second call to Ancestry corporate, all our information was removed because it violates Ancestry's policies, not any laws. Ancestry was very receptive so it's worth a try. Pat

    3. Hi Madeline, I don't know how to remove your tree but am blind copying Brian in hopes that he may advise you directly. I am for you and forewarn others to take your time to consider all of your years of work before posting a tree on Ancestry or elsewhere. If you want to make contacts, post on Rootsweb Message Boards instead of posting your entire tree. Many rellies found me that way. ATTN: EVERY READER Please voice your complaints about "Living people with personal details on Ancestry." This practice is against solid genealogical practices. 1. [BKLYN] 1910 census -- looking for 193 Osborn St in Brooklyn
    2. Mary D. Taffet via
    3. If Steve Morse's site were functional right now, I'd go there to find the enumeration district for 193 Osborn Street (Brooklyn) in the 1910 census. But until his site comes back online, I'm trying to find that address in any other way I can. I think I've narrowed it down to Ward 26, which shows other streets in that general area, but there are many enumeration districts within Ward 26. I'm trying to go back and forth between Google maps and the enumeration district descriptions that show up if you go to browse the records in Ward 26, but can't find all of the roads mentioned on the map, so I don't know which set of images to start with. If I have to, I'll go through all of them, but that will take a very long time. So I'm hoping that somebody else might already know what enumeration district I would find 193 Osborn Street in. -- Here's hoping, Mary

    2. Joyce Presnall via
    3. I should not even give this post the dignity of a reply but I will. Ancestry WANTS our feedback about things we don't like, things that are broken etc. HOW can they fix things if they don't know what the issue is... Ar first I thought when i saw your response who in the world would say something like this--but THEN I saw who it was from and it all made sense. I USUALLY ignore your posts... 1. [BKLYN] I see my last post re NEW ancestry has not gone through probably because it was so long...please watch for it
    2. Joyce Presnall via
    3. I DO hope admins let this long post through as it is important. While we are making lists of what we DON'T like about NEW ancestry we probably should also make a list of the things we LIKE about the new ancestry. Many people use different functions than I do, so getting everyone's input on things they catch is important. I am making a WORD doc of all the issues I will email to people after we get all the info together if they like. This will make it easier to keep track of issues when we try to register SPECIFIC complaints about what is not working or what we don't like. In case my last post does not get though essentially what it asked was for EVERYONE to make lists of the things they are seeing that either don't work right OR things you don't like...I had posted many things I have already found that were a problem such as NOW you cannot see the age people were at the time of various events-this really helps you to see if you have attached a child who was born when parents were 11 years old as well as seeing when a death date you entered means the guy was 120 when he died (no joke--I have seen this in trees) Also you can no longer print off a tree view to catch many generations unless you want to spend a fortune in ink as the gray background is going to eat up tons of it. Formatting stories with paragraphs etc is a waste of time as they are running all the text together. Please send me OFF LIST but in the same thread (this one or the one that hopefully will show up soon. PLEASE do not email me ONE issue at a time. Keep track of everything you find and send me ONE list of everything you like or don't like about the NEW version. I'll probably shoot myself by the end of the week, but I think it is important that we get a list together that is specific about the various issues. They cannot fix things that they don't know are broken--PUT THE SITE THROUGH EVERY PACE YOU CAN THINK OF--I am finding problems with all kinds of things. Thanks for your help--if we work together with luck we can identify MOST the problems. Have a great day Joyce --

    1. [BKLYN] I am working on a consolidated list of things that don't work or we don't like w/ New Ancestry-Please help
    2. Joyce Presnall via
    3. I am probably going to shoot myself for volunteering to do this BUT it is the best way I can see for all of us to ID the problems we are seeing with the New and NOT improved version of ancestry.com. I am asking for everyone's help in ID'ing issues they see. PLEASE do not respond with 1 complaint at a time--that WILL drive me crazy LOL Put the NEW ancestry through every pace you can think of, try to use every function you are used to working and email me ONE consolidated list of all the issues you find. Once I have a consolidated list I will be happy to email you the WORD doc so when we register complaints you can easily remember all the problems to tell them about. In order not not clog up the lists, please email me off list BUT USE THE SAME THREAD sop I can easily find all your comments. Here is what I have come up with so far---it takes a while to find everything that is wrong with NEW site..so really put it through the paces and try to check everything. Thank you Joyce NEW ancestry problems Formatting in Stories is useless as when you look at them ALL the text runs together ---this makes various things very hard to read---If you have a long story and it has NO paragraphs-it becomes a nightmare to read and understand…Paragraphs were invented for a reason—it breaks up the info to make it more readable. Copying the descendancy chart is useless now as it does not come out with spacing between the various people in the line. It runs them all together making it difficult to tell one generation from the next NO ages in the chronology in Fact View—It is important to to show people’s ages at the time of various things happening ESPECIALLY with the birth of a child. It used to be easy to see if there was an error in some ones birth date or something if you noticed on the timeline the person was 11 years old or something just as crazy --- You cannot see how old a person is when they die---I have seen some trees that have people 119 (or in one case I saw someone who was 300 years old at time of death.) We NEED to be able to quickly see how old a person is all along the timeline!!! NOW we have to take out our calculator for all those events to see if it makes sense—you USED to be able to tell at a glance—THIS is going to CREATE a lot more mistakes in trees if we cannot readily see how old a person was at various events—it used to be quite clear there was an error of some type—now we cannot tell so there are going to be a lot more trees showing up where someone had a kid at 11 years old OR lived to the age of 300… Can no longer print a tree view of a family unless you want to use TONS of black ink—also when you print and the background is such a dark gray it is not as visually pleasing…Black text with a white background is the NORMAL way of printing things. I don’t want to spend a fortune on ink to be able to print off family views so my tree makes sense to the person who will inherit all my genealogy info. I am in the process of making paper copies of many things so the person who takes over my work when I die will have a clue of who it who---It will cost me a fortune to print off all the gray--- There is NO way to do a quick edit on someone. I have a person marked UNKNOWN for date of death. I want to change that to a blank as ancestry techs told me a while back that one should NOT put unknown in a field as the computer searches for a death date of “unknown” BUT there is no way for me to edit this as his death date of “unknown” does not show up in the timeline. I want the ability to do a quick edit in the header portion of the profile page...There is NO WAY for me to get this entry of UNKNOWN off his page .

    3. After 2 people wrote me about how much they LIKED to new site I decided to go back to it today ALL THE PROBLEMS I AND MANY OTHERS SAW YESTERDAY ARE GONE SO if YOU hit the same glitch period that me and MANY others hit --try the new site again I have not 100% run the new site through it's paces BUT I am seeing things I thought (am MANY others thought) were GONE yesterday seems like we ALL hit the same glitch period. IF YOU DID Try it again...it takes tiem top get used to a totally new site look but aside form some minor things (like you cannot se pics when you look at profile page) overall it is not TOO much different than before. WHEW I am GLAD--I was worried I was going to have to find a new place for my tree and copy a gazillion photos and stories SO glad I don't have to FYI ancestry tech today told me her was TOLD to deny stories about auction although that info came from a highly respected financial website...I have NOT been able to find any stories about this since. 1. Re: [BKLYN] [NY-IRISH] New Ancestry.com format
    2. Joyce Presnall via
    3. I haven not gotten that far yet Barb--but I do intend to find out...I know somewhere in my travels yesterday on the old version I ran into a way to contact corporate but did not look at that link. This morning I discovered that they have info on LIVING PEOPLE listed. On my mothers page (who is deceased) they have made a note in her file for every time she had a child so they are listing on a PUBLIC PAGE of a deceased person, not only the names of the living children but their exact birth dates. ID thieves will have a field day with that once they figure that out! I did find a feedback forum this AM and I left a scathing review there, recommend others do the same...BUT unless they hear from us in very large numbers I would not expect anything to change. Right now you have the ability to go back to the "Classic Ancestry" but when you switch back to classic you see a note that says pretty soon the New Ancestry will be the ONLY option... I wonder if they are trying to keep people from having large trees and they are trying to save space on their servers...you cannot find folks in a large tree the way they have it set up...and the tree view is awful only showing 1 generation at a time. The ONLY thing I have found so far to leave feedback is the suggestions link http://www.ancestry.com/suggestions I used the General feedback <https://ancestry.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_bEi2G4scYqbsntP&ucdmid=005f7a38-0003-0000-0000-000000000000> but there are several other options that would fit the bill. Site navigation <http://ancestry.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_5nX2T2C4tFV0NE1&ucdmid=005f7a38-0003-0000-0000-000000000000> might be another place to put your remarks as they certainly have messed that us also. I'll do some digging to try to get a corp address...This is worse than what they did the the Ellis Island site BUT it has the same look and lack of function--I wonder if it was designed by the same people? Someone commented re having to do with the fact the site is up for sale...I thought about that...making it "modern and techy" looking...It is quite clear that nobody involved in this had a clue about research and all the things that were added to the "Classic Ancestry" over the years to improve functionality. They have set the site back 10 years and unless they hear from a LOT of us that is the way it will stay...so if ever there was a time to use networking to get everyone you know informed and also to get them to complain, we may be stuck with this mess, which makes a LOT of things just too cumbersome. When you look at a person's page, the Census data is off to the side as are the directories...over the years I have painstakingly copied the addresses I found in directories each time I attached one so I could follow their movements easily in their timeline...That is now ALL GONE...You virtually get NOTHING in their timeline except when their parents died and when their kids or born...for any other info on them you have to poke around in various places And of course FEEDBACK has a limited # of characters you can use in your "suggestion" so one cannot even tell them everything that is wrong with the site. I was on the news site for about 30-45 min trying to understand how it was set up--but when I tried to search for a new person that had a lot more stories etc so I could see what that looked like the search function did not work. I am worried that is I switch back to new version again that at some point I might not be able to get back to the old version but I am going to have my work cut out for me making stories for descendancy for everyone I possibly can as that function is gone too...while you automatically see your relationship to someone, you can no longer see the lines that got you there This is 10 x worse than Ellis Island--at least that only affected one small portion of documents...THIS affects your entire tree. Finding a way to get them to listen is going to be difficult as many people are not even going to realize this new version exists until one day they sign on and are in this strange new site... I suggest we all network as much as possible and get as many people to file complaints as possible...
