It is not an expansion of the SSDI database. It is a totally different database of applications and claims filed with Social Security. It is a much smaller database than the SSDI, but it contains a lot more genealogy information, including in many cases birthplaces, parents' names, and name changes (e.g., after a marriage). I have located a number of people in the new database who, though dead, are not listed in the SSDI, because they died before the SSDI was established in the early 1960s. Also, though you cannot do searches on maiden names in the SSDI, you can do so in the new database. The name of the new database is "U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007." It's a very useful database. It's helped me break through brick walls for several people I am researching. For those of you with access to Ancestry.com, they just expanded the info they have from the Social Security Death Index. They now have the place of birth and the names of the parents. This appears to be the additional information from the original SS5 applications that the original index did not provide. Larry Lanzaro
I don’t volunteer with a formal organization but do help out whenever I can with either cemetery photos or research. My father-in-law lived in western Maryland and used to collect old pictures and I’ve spent a good bit of time reuniting them with their descendants. It feels good to do that for someone. I have a cousin in Westbury and have asked her to take a trip to Brooklyn to spend time at the cemetery. Hopefully now I won’t need to wait for someone else to go. Hi Kathy, I forwarded your request to a colleague asking if he photographs there. People outside the area don't realize that headstone photography in NYC is not merely "stopping by." Cemeteries may have multiple entrances, sections that are miles away from each other crossing over major urban highways, and rows labeled from A-ZZ---that's 52 headstones back from the path. Headstones may be camouflaged with vines (including poison ivy) and have faded or illegible inscriptions. As a headstone photographer, many times I'd get to the requester's location to discover that no headstone existed, or the location is scarily isolated, or the wrong location was provided. This adds the step of verifying each request with the cemetery office, if it is open or one exists. Snakes, mud, bees, and soaring temps [today's index = 100] are additional reasons why less folks volunteer to perform such acts of kindness that will take at least an hour to perform. Major NYC cemeteries are not the sweet, bucolic places one imagines in the county. I'd never expect anyone to perform the task fee free. That's the beauty of findagrave and these other sites, there are folks who do it for free. One thing I did forget to say is that for most of the NYC requests, the requester needs to make sure the grave location is included in the request. Yes. I’ve had a memorial w/request for photo on the site for awhile but just deleted the old memorial and reposted to see if it generates a response. Sometimes, when I have had no success through the normal process at FindAGrave I would look at photos on other people's memorials and then you the bio of the person who took the photo. It is a little time-consuming and a little bit tricky but in some of those bios is indicated to contact them directly for photos at certain the cemeteries.
