    1. [BKLYN] ancestry and NARA
    2. Ancestry.com partners with National Archives WASHINGTON - Those interested in finding out whether their great-great-great grandfather was a German farmer or an Austrian shoe cobbler may have an easier time doing so, thanks to a new partnership between Ancestry.com and the National Archives. The D.C.-based Archives and the genealogy Web site signed an agreement Tuesday that would allow Ancestry.com to digitize many of its records and make them available online for family tree enthusiasts. "The National Archives has, truly, billions of documents and without partnerships like this, they have no really good way or substantial budget to digitize them themselves," said Tim Sullivan, chief executive of Ancestry.com. Under the agreement, Ancestry.com will make INS passenger arrival and departure lists between 1897 and 1958 available. Researchers will also be able to find death notices for U.S. citizens abroad between 1835-1974. The company previously worked with the Archives to put census records online, Sullivan said, and will put up additional information as their relationship progresses. Ancestry.com employees working on the project will be allowed direct access to the Archives themselves to do their work. Genealogy has been growing as a hobby over the past few years; Ancestry.com, for example, has around three million users. According to Elizabeth Powell Crowe, author of the book "Genealogy Online", the Internet has made access to primary sources rather than secondary ones more feasible and convenient, cutting down on the travel time and expense the pursuit requires. "It's getting easier all the time, and the interaction between online genealogists is getting better," Crowe said. For example, the virtual program Second Life has several groups devoted to the topic, she said. ************** Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. Watch "Cooking with Tyler Florence" on AOL Food. 3. Hi lists, Seeking info and relations to Jacob J. Samuels b. 1889 NY, d. 1969 NY. He was a police officer. His parents were Morris Samuel(s) (Samuel in England, Samuels in NY) b. England abt. 1856 & Sarah Jacobs (possibly Jacobson) b. England or possibly Poland-Russia abt. 1858. From my research he married a woman named Lillie (maiden name unknown) abt. 1914. I've gathered children's names from census records as well as from his obit's. Some of his sibling's names from his obits make sense & fit from what I've found through research, but some don't compute to me at all! Here are the obits I have for him from Oct. 25 & 26, 1969: SAMUEL Jacob J. Obit Oct 25 1969 SAMUEL_Jacob J. Beloved husband of Lillie. 2. Thanks to all who responded to my email and searched online too. Kathleen, thanks for the instructions on how to access current Death notices on the Newsday site. I did not find the obit online either but then I was not doing it right! Thanks for setting me straight. Wonder why they only have the Long Island version online? Being my Edwin Reynolds died in Jamaica, I would not expect it to be listed in the LI version. Will try Queensboro for a look up. Thanks again everyone - It is still the best group around... 2. Deborah, I couldn't find the obituary either, looking at March 10 through the 16th notices, but I would like to add on to what Mike (MIKE MCHENRY" _maurmike1@verizon.net_ (mailto:maurmike1@verizon.net) ) wrote... Go to _www.newsday.com_ (http://www.newsday.com) and while scrolling down the page, look on the far left-hand side for "Death Notices." Click on Death Notices and scroll down the page until you get to the monthly calendar. For past obituaries (back to May 2007), you will be able to search two ways - by surname or by month. I checked the surname and he did not show. I then went to the calendar and clicked on the '<' sign twice for the calendar to change to March 2008. Your Edwin A. Reynolds did not show up there either. The only thing that I can think of is that he was not submitted to the Long Island version of Newsday. Sorry. Just a thought... maybe you should give the Queens Library a call and see if they can look it up? 1. [BKLYN] 1880 Census Look Up Assistance
    2. Does anyone have access to images of the 1880 Federal Census or a digital, searchable version, who would be willing to search for my great grandfather? His name was Ignacy (Ignatius, Ignatz) Zabinski. I have found him in 1900, 1910, and 1920 settled in Brooklyn with his family. The addresses were: 1900 23? 26th St. (Brooklyn, Ward 8, Supervisor's Dist. 2, Enumeration Dist. 96, Sheet 12) 1910 146 30th St. 1920 1533 Graves End Ave. Ignacy arrived at Castle Garden in 1878 and gave his age as 32 (b abt 1846). His age varies widely in the Census records. In 1880, my great grandmother and the children still were living in Poland; they didn't immigrate until 1886. So in 1880, I suspect Ignacy was a boarder somewhere in Brooklyn. I tried searching using the feature on Family Search.org, but I did not find him. It isn't a very flexible search feature, but I did try entering common misspellings. If he's to be found, he's either misspelled or transcribed incorrectly. The 1920 Census indicates Ignacy was naturalized in 1884. Where is the most likely place he would have filed his papers? Thanks for any assistance you can offer!

    1. [BKLYN] Civil War (& After) Records
    2. Hello all! I haven't posted in quite a while but feel it's time for me to call in the assistance of some of the experts out there. I have a g-g uncle, one of those relatives that you don't know a whole lot about, (but would like to) but until now, was lost after his discharge from the Union army in 1865. I have always been able to establish that he enlisted in the Union Army on 6 Aug 1862 and discharged on 5 June 1865 from Company B 15th Heavy Artillery Regiment, NY. After that, I've not found any records on him. Until recently, when quite by accident, I found him hiding in plain sight! Seems, according to US Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914, I find that he "re-enlisted" on 17 Aug 1866. Now here's where I need some expert help; I can't read the script writing, or interpret it correctly. What I am seeing is that my uncle HOLLWEG, AUGUST (3rd line down) "re-upped" on 17Aug 1866. residing in Willets Point, NY, with all other personal information matching up. On the second page is where I have problems. I can't figure out if it reads "Dis or Des" which I'm interpreting to mean either "discharged" or "deserted"! Deserted makes more sense as my reading is REGIMENT: Eng (I'm assuming engineering?) COMPANY: None listed and then: DIS or DES Nov 4 66, Returned Nov 14,66, Des Nov 16, 66, ???? (Approx???) Oct 14, 72? Des Aug 17, 72. If anyone with an Ancestry.com subscription would mind taking a look at the record and giving me their input, I'd be very grateful. Thanks, Judy-Cincinnati
