Tom, What is Genealogy Bank's long term goal with its newspaper archives? Are you planning to expand the number of accessible years for the newspapers you already have available, or is your acquisition plan focused on providing a quantity of titles for a few years each? In the future, I would like to see more NYC newspapers that reflect its various immigrant cultures, and the NY Journal American, made available. C. on Montrose Ave in Brooklyn. Has anyone had any success with getting records from this Church? FHC lists a Holy Trinity Church but it's a Protestant church on Montague St I have a brick wall on establishing his village in Baden and perhaps a record of death from his church may help. He immigrated in 1843 at the age of 12 but have not been able to locate any passenger records or his application for citizenship. All census records just indicate Baden if anything. * I am trying to find out if my great-aunt might have been divorced. She was married on November 15, 1903. Her husband remarried in 1910 but my great-aunt did not die in the time between the marriages. I have a copy of the book "Genealogical Resources in the New York Metropolitan Area" by Estelle M Guzik and it says that Kings County (Brooklyn) has Divorces, separations or annulments from c. 1850 to present. But the restrictions say the records can only be viewed by the parties or their attornies. It also says that the index libers are open to the public. I am hoping that some of the knowledgeable people on this list can tell me if I can look at the records or libers and that they cold lell me the address to write to and the possible fee that would be charged. Thanks in advance for any help you are able to provide. John McGreal Beaver, PA *
Kathleen, Here are two suggestions. They've both worked for me. Try the online obituary sites such as America's Obituary and Death Notices and Rootsweb's Obituary Daily Times. Your local library might subscribe to America's Obituary and Death Notices. Then, the other suggestion is to email or call the library in the county that the death occurred in. Give all pertinent data such as name, date of death, etc. and ask if they have a Newsday index and would they search for the obit and mail it to you. They'll probably charge a nominal fee. Or perhaps you can ask for an interlibrary loan photocopy from your local library. I know that's also how I can get an out of state obit from my library in Jacksonville. Thank you for sending me the link to the WWI registration cards. Through the images there I was able to determine that my great grandfather served as a registrar in his area, and was the official who signed the registration of the nephew he had raised. That makes the card I have for that registration all the more interesting! Theresa denchief@earthlink.net EarthLink Revolves Around You. b./
Hi Kathleen, You could either try to contact NEWSDAY (www.newsday.com) directly (NEWSDAY is currently located in the Hamlet of Melville in the Town of Huntington, Suffolk County), or one of the 50 or so libraries (www.nassaulibrary.org) in Nassau County to see if they cam make a copy of the article for you. I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan Great Falls, MT & Jericho, NY

I have several images saved of these cards, and a few questions. If anyone could answer these I would be very very grateful. First, on the Registration cards there is a line for date of Registration. Above and a bit to the right of that is another line for a signature. Does anyone have the ability to read that fine print on a copy they have and tell me whose signature was required there? It is not the registrants, so I am assuming it is someone from the Government??? And I am assuming this would be pretty much the same on all the registrations, but I might be wrong - does anyone know? Next - I have an image of the registration for Walter Williamson Rennet. It is very difficult for me to read.. Would someone with access to these images be kind enough to look at it and see if they can read it? These are now online in several places, and I am thinking that perhaps a different source than mine might have made a clearer scan of the microfilm, or whatever it was they do - you can tell from the vertical lines that the problem is in the scanning. One thing that is very clear is a set of numbers stamped on the right hand portion of the card - 31-9-175-C. Lastly...I have been looking for the registration of my Great Grandfather. He was born in 1873 and served in the Spanish American War, of which he was tremendously proud. I am certain that if he was required to register, he did. However, the name is frequently misspelled and I have not hit the right mispelling, perhaps. It would be Edward J. Renaut, if it were spelled properly, but I have seen it as Ranuit, Rennet, Rennaut and just about anything else that could possibly sound more or less like Renaut. He was living in the 30's in Manhattan at the time and probably listed his wife, Emily, as his next of kin. (Now I know the 30's is not Brooklyn, but there was at least one Brooklyn card in the three or four I am currently looking at... ) Thanks in advance for whatever guidance any of you can give me. Hello all: I am new to the Brooklyn list and would welcome any suggestions on accessing probate records. Using the Family History Library (Salt Lake City) film "Master Card File Index to Kings County, New York Probate Records," #541783, I was able to locate the cards for two individuals I am researching. They are dated from 1870 to 1892. Is the Surrogate Court the only place that has these? Does anyone know if the probate files themselves have been filmed? I haven't been able to find anything in the FHL catalog that indicates they hold a copy. Thanks for the help, Laurie

Question: #1.) Would the original Social Security application for my grandfather have required some legal proof of his birth such as a birth certificate or baptismal record? He was supposedly born in 1883 and we have yet to find either of the two mentioned proofs. #2.) If such was required, would the SSA have record of it and be willing to share, or at least be able to tell us what was provided at the time of application? Thank you. >>Also include in letter the applicants birth and death date.<< **************Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. Found it> 17l6: New York City required licensing of midwives. Such licenses placed the midwife in the role of servant of the state, a keeper of social and civil order. http://www.midwiferytoday.com/articles/timeline.asp Barb ************** Gas prices getting you down? After some research online, I see that midwives were often nurses. Perhaps this is why old directories often had a separate listing for nurses. In its history, the subject seems to be intermingled with homeopathy, and foreign born were often neighborhood midwives.
