    1. [BKLYN] ROWE Family
    2. Sue Petersen
    3. Hello from New Zealand My great great grandparents were Richard James ROWE b 22 Sept 1824 in Tavistock, Devon, England. He married Elizabeth Ann Newcombe BABB on 8 December 1847. They had five children - Jane Newcombe ROWE who was my great grandmother and four brothers - William Babb ROWE, Richard James ROWE, George Newcombe ROWE and Walter Henry ROWE. Jane married Robert RUTHERFORD and moved to New Zealand, and her brothers Richard, George and Walter also moved to New Zealand. However William Babb ROWE moved to America and appears on the New York census in 1870. William Babb ROWE was born 26 December 1848. He met and married Eliza H Lampson in New York on 29 June 1885. They had one child (I have only been able to trace one through the census records). His name was Frank R ROWE born about 1887. Elizabeth also had two daughters from a previous marriage. Frank was born in New York about 1887 and married Helen V? Helen and Frank had one daughter - Dorothy born around 1914. I have copies of the census from 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 but the trail runs cold after this. I have not been able to find any trace of Dorothy or Frank & Helen after 1930. Does anybody link with this family? My main reason for tracking them is that these distant cousins were in contact with my grandmother before I was born and also when I was a little girl. I am now aged 56. Someone in that family sent a Ginny doll to me with a gorgeous wardrobe around 1960 (give or take a year or two). They also sent a tiny ring to my father's elder brother when that boy was only about 5 years old. I would love to find out who it was that sent the gifts and where the family has gone to now. Any information would be gratefully received. Regards, Sue Petersen New Zealand sue.petersen@xtra.co.nz

    1. [BKLYN] English Front-End for Bezeq's Israeli Phone Directory
    2. Joy Rich
    3. Forwarded on behalf of Steve Morse (http://www.stevemorse.org) Bezeq's website has changed recently and it is more usable, although it's still not as good as it was originally. Originally they would show you an initial batch of hits and would let you keep requesting more hits until you got all those satisfying your requirements.  But a while ago they changed it so that they only give you five hits, and they expect you to enter the city and street if you want to narrow it down to a specific hit.  Of course if you knew the city and street you wouldn't need their webpage to search for the person. The change they just made allows you to get 15 initial hits instead of 5.  They still don't let you get additional hits unless you narrow down your search by city and street, but they do make it easier for you to enter the city and street.  So things are a bit better, although it's still far from being as useful as it was originally. Consequently I have resurrected my one-step form that allows you to use the bezeq site in English.  It's where it used to be -- in the foreign-alphabets section of my http://www.stevemorse.org website. The features of my form are the following: 1. My search form is entirely in English (with Hebrew translations for convenience of Hebrew-speaking users),  whereas the bezeq search form which is entirely in Hebrew and unusable by English-speaking users. 2. You can enter the name, street, or city in Latin letters and have them transliterated into the hebrew letters required by bezeq.  If you use the bezeq site directly, you need to have a Hebrew keyboard in order to type theose items in Hebrew letters. 3. You can select the city from a list rather than having to type in the name of the city.  If you use the bezeq site directly, you must type in the city name. 4. The bezeq site gives the results entirely in Hebrew.  My site translates and transliterates the results into English as appropriate. Specifically, the first and last names in each result found are transliterated into English, and the original Hebrew spelling is displayed as well.  The city in each result is translated (not transliterated) into English.  And the names of the specific telecom company searched are translated into English. 5. If you use the bezeq site directly, each result contains links to get the phone number and map.  But of course these links are in Hebrew.  My result page also contains these links, but they are in English. -- Steve

    1. [BKLYN] PHAIR, PHIER, THIER
    2. Betty
    3. Hello, While looking on-line for information on my HUTCHINSON families living in Brooklyn from the 1850's on, I came across the name, Gustave PHIER. I had found a Gardiner / Gardner SYMMES, 21, in 1910, marrying an Adele PHIER (living with her parents at that time). If I'm remembering correctly, one of my ex-brothers-in-law in Brooklyn married into a PHAIR family. I believe her father was a government official of some kind. I'm just curious if these are different spellings of the same name, or whether they are different surnames - with different origins. (I also found PHIER spelled as THIER in census records.) Betty (near Lowell, MA) FYI: I am looking for descendants of 3 HUTCHINSON siblings from the 1800's. John B. HUTCHINSON and his 2 married sisters, Mrs.Gardner SYMMES and Mrs. Elizabeth DODGE left the large HUTCHINSON Farm in Winchester, MA, during the 1850's and 1860's and moved to - Brooklyn. I am especially interested in male descendants of John. Of his 2 brothers who remained on the Farm in Winchester, Thomas and Jacob, there are no living male descendants. Unfortunately, there was one. I only found out about a Robert HUTCHINSON a year ago. He was killed in a car accident 2 years before that. Sadly, I found out he had lived about a 20-minute drive from my home. He had never married. (Many divorces and "never married" in this extended family.) (There was another sister, Mrs. Maria JOHNSON, in Winchester.) (Through HeritageQuest, I can look for census data up to 1920, but did not have too much luck finding the above families from 1900 to 1920.)

    1. [BKLYN] Today at the Municipal Archives
    2. For anyone who has been to 31 Chambers Street, you know what an extravagantly beautiful building it is, with it's marble swirling staircases and handrails, high ceillings, carved medallions, etc. Even the dividers in the ladies' room are marble, from its inception. Today, as I saw a couple of weeks ago, the entire ground floor open space was decorated with thousands of live red and white flower bouquets, panels of burgundy velvet curtains between the interior columns, and later in the day, furniturel...a huge black, baby grand piano and furnishings suitable to an exquisite home. After speaking to some folks, I found out that a Disney movie was being filmed there, once the building closed to the public. It is a romantic comedy with Danny DaVito. The basic plot is about a woman in Rome who takes coins from a fountain, and then is pursued by the men who tossed the coins there. The expected release date is December. The building is supposed to depict a grand room in Rome. In addition to the swarming filming crew, the archives were chock full of out of staters researching. You can always spot them. They are not used to the pace. They inadvertently block the aisles to the microfilms and get offended when the limited, multi tasking staff at the archives gives them fast, curt directions to use the machines. It's vacation season here too. For those unfamiliar with 31 Chambers Street, the building is a landmark and photos w/o today's decor are available online...just go to Google.com. Episodes of Law and Order and CSI are regularly filmed there. It was one of those luscious summer days in NYC today with heat, but a breeze, and low humidity. Days like this make you proud to be a native New Yorker. Barb ************** Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. Do you have any idea approximatelu when he came to the USA? Did he arrive in, and stay in the NYC area? Please provide any addresses you mayhave for him. 2. I like it with one exception....I don't like it when the green leaf stays next to a name after I've checked it and determined that the person they are suggesting might be a family member is not. I have almost 4,000 names in my data base and can't remember if I checked that green leaf or not, so I keep rechecking when I see a green leaf. > [Original Message] > From: Karen <kromeo@aol.com> > To: <NYBROOKLYN-L@rootsweb.com>; <MD-BaltimoreCity-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: 7/1/2008 8:06:18 PM > Subject: [BKLYN] Ancestry's new search format... > > Is there anyone on the list that hates the new format? > > It is horrible! > > Karen > ___________________________________ > > The Bklyn Info Pages Website: > www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/ > > List Administrator: NancyL916@aol.com > > Post to List: nybrooklyn@rootsweb.com > ___________________________________ > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to NYBROOKLYN-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. > Hello Gareth..... Here is some information from one of the Social Security sites....www.socialsecurity.gov/history/hgaq.html I hope this will be of help to you. Best regards, Judie What information is available from Social Security records to help in genealogical research? A: You might want to start by checking out the Social Security Death Index which is available online from a variety of commercial services (usually the search is free). The Death Index contains a listing of persons who had a Social Security number, who are deceased, and whose death was reported to the Social Security Administration. (The information in the Death Index for people who died prior to 1962 is sketchy since SSA's death information was not automated before that date. Death information for persons who died before 1962 is generally only in the Death Index if the death was actually reported to SSA after 1962, even though the death occurred prior to that year.) If you find a person in the Death Index you will learn the date of birth and Social Security Number for that person. (The Social Security Death Index is not published by SSA for public use, but is made available by commercial entities using information from SSA records. We do not offer support of these commercial products nor can we answer questions about the material in the Death Index.) Other records potentially available from SSA include the Application for a Social Security Number (form SS-5). To obtain any information from SSA you will need to file a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. > > > > Hi Folks, > Greetings from Ireland. > > Could someone check the SSDI for me please. > > My Uncle Charles McAllister > was born Belfast Co Antrim on 25 April 1903 > He died NY on 4 July 1952 > > The last address I have for him is 1823 Flatbush Ave, Brooklyn but > this > is 1931 > > I would like to find an Obit for him and his place of Burial in NY > if at > all possible. > > Thanking you in advance. > > Gareth C J Mac Allister > > > > > . 2. Your Uncle Charles does not show up in any obituary in the NY Times. He is not interned in a popular Brooklyn cemetery called Greenwood. Although social security started in 1935 most listing on the index do not start until the early 60's. Ur only option would appear to be to order his death record from the Social security administration and/or get his application (SS%) from the SSA for further information. Chers to you across the pond. Bob Hi Folks, Greetings from Ireland. Could someone check the SSDI for me please.
