    3. Allen, My grandfather doesn't show up in the online SSDI index either. But, with a copy of his death certificate and proof of his social security number (in my case I had the original social security card in my possession), I was still able to obtain a copy of his SS-5. All it means is that you won't be able to use one of those auto-generated letters. Instead you'll need to write a letter, stating that you have proof of death (the death certificate) and proof of the social security number (in your case what was included on the death certificate). That's really all you need -- along with sending the proper fee of course. There are many possible explanations for why this person doesn't show up in the SSDI, but they really don't matter if your only purpose is obtaining a copy of the SS-5, since that can still be done. -- Mary AllenAmet@aol.com wrote: > Hi > > I finally obtained the D-C for one Frank (=Francis) Stevens, who died in > NYC on Sep 19, 1958. > > It states, typed, that his SS # was 088-03-5994, and that he was born in > 1873. > > But when I enter that SS # in the SSDI, it gives NO result at all, or > name, so I can't use it for an SS-5. > > Any clues? > > Thanks. > > Allen

    2. Ancestry had a program a few years ago that had the computer automatically merge families/people the computer thought were related....one such person wound up attached to my family...he does not belong there.... I called ancestry, they said there is nothing they can do to undo this, although they have discontinued this program...perhaps that is where your error is coming from? As many times as I have detached this person from our family info, every time the ancestry system recycles, it pops back in there...I dunno WHO thought of the automatching stuff...but they should be shot...especially since there is no way to undo it...Perhaps this is where your error is coming in? Sometimes I am really not fond of ancestry.com, but like AOL, I think they are the best game in town...Most the "new" info I see some cites talking about, has been on ancestry for years... If enough people complained about the wrong matching on these trees, maybe they would get it fixed, but I doubt it...I don't think they much care.... It makes me angry that all my hard work goes out the window when they put someone in my tree that is clearly not related...even the person who "owns" this other person knows he doesn't belong there, but we are powerless to get it fixed...ancestry is on auto-pilot, and keeps putting this person back where he doesn't belong, no matter how many times we remove him... 2. Hi I finally obtained the D-C for one Frank (=Francis) Stevens, who died in NYC on Sep 19, 1958. It states, typed, that his SS # was 088-03-5994, and that he was born in 1873. 3. The Social Security Death Index was not computerized until 1962. The index contains very few deaths prior to that date. Even if the death was reported to Social Security, if it occurred prior to 1962, it likely will not be contained in the index. 3. . I have been at it for 14 years and everything > was free or reasonable. Then everyone got on the bandwagon and > started charging and now they are rich and we cannot afford them. Too bad we > did not buy stock in them. Barbara The above quote from Mz Scarlett reminds me of when I first started my searches back when the Mormon site was a total freebie. I still have the early CD's of the census that I used for 3 years to help others find their relatives in England. Then the LDS site was free and you got your entire line and all the names of your ancestors and their birth and marriages and the deaths. You had the entire family, names dates places etc. both sides man and wife. Then along came "whatever" and all those records were sealed. The strange part was that of all the over 300 ancestors I found not one of them was a Mormon, but because an ancestor born in 1945 turned Mormon she had the whole kit and caboodle of ancestors from the 1600's to the present SEALED. Now you get diddley......if I ever get my hands on her she will get what for. Call me thoroughly disgusted Claudia. Steve Morse One-Step for 1891 Canadian Census   Now that Ancestry has added the 1891 Canadian census, Steve Morse's One-Step utility for the Canadian census has been extended to include that year. It can be found in the Canada/UK Census section of the One-Step website at http://stevemorse.org. Advantages of using the One-Step utility for 1891 Canada rather than going to the Ancestry site directly include: - can search all years from the same form - can search on middle initial - can search on birth year being between two values rather than using plus-or-minus - can search on age - can search on religion - can select district from drop-down list instead of having to type it - can specify more than 50 hits per page Joy Rich Brooklyn, NY
