Hi everyone. I am new to this list but hopefully someone out there may recognize some of these names. I am looking for the following people and I will write what information I know . There was a witness at my grandmother's wedding named Katherine KAVANAGH. I am trying to track her family down because I think they are related to us in some way. My grandmother was Catherine Smith b 1885 in Newtown, Queens married in 1908 In Rockland Co, NY and died in 1949 in Rockland Co, NY. Kit and Bbokken and List, Thank you so much for the help! I'm trying to help a relative whose father just passed away before his 90th birthday. Her father and his siblings were all separated and put into different orphanages after their mother died giving birth to the 5th child. They have absolutely no family history, or thought they didn't anyway. I so appreciate the info sent to me. I remembered tonight what a generous spirit prevails on this list! I wasn't surprised at errors. I'm long time subscriber. I'm well aware of Mac and M' but adding a space was so unusual. For 61 years I have been spelling my name and never added a space. Nor do I know any family members or other Mc's who add a space. This was an arbitrary decision by a data entry person(s). This "error" appears throughout their databases. MIKE maurmike1@verizon.net
Thank you for the reminder, Mike. I'll add to that. For "Mc" surnames, check for "Mac" and "M', " preceding a space or not, preceding a capitalized next letter or not. Does anyone have ties to the FOLLIART family? Please email me if you do. A Brooklyn lister just received several family photos and photo albums and would like to see them returned to a family member. Hello all, I am desperately searching for "proof" of birth of Thomas/Tommaso/Gaetano Valiando/Valiante. His parents were Michele & Antonia Valiante (Italians that came to US ~1880 and changed surname to Valiando while in US) Based on records I have collected I believe he was born on May 17, 1887 (WWI draft card for Thomas Valiando). His 1912 marriage as Tommaso Valiando puts him at 25 years old. His 1922 death certificate in Brooklyn as Thomas Valiando puts him at 34 years old (no date of birth provided). The 1900 census for Michele & Antonia Valiante list him as Gaetano born in 1890, but many years on that census were off by +3 years) I have contacted the Municipal Archives to search for his birth certificate from 1887-1890 in Brooklyn, but no results turned up. He had 5 US born siblings (Alphonso, Maria, Rosie, Louisa, Angelina, Catharina) and only the youngest, Catharina appears to have been registered with the city. I know he was married at the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on April 30, 1913 to Esther Noel. >From 1894 (Michele's naturalization) to 1900 I know that Michele Valiante/Valiando and family lived at 3 Howard Court, and from 1900 and on they lived at 145 Prospect Street. The archivists of the Brooklyn Diocese were incredibly helpful and recommended three churches where he may have been baptized (as the child of Italian speaking immigrants): Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Our Lady of Mount Carmel St. Peters (records now at St. Paul & St. Agnes) I have contacted those three churches and am waiting for responses. I do not want to take the "shotgun" approach of bothering every Catholic church in Brooklyn that existed in 1887, so I am targeting my requests based on suggestions and high likelihood. Can anyone think of any other churches or options I can follow? I am in Sydney, Australia so this is a difficult search from a time-zone and distance perspective. I have gathered records for much of the Valiante/Valiando family, but this one record is missing. Thanks for any help that can be offered.
Depending upon the year, Directories may have business sections where they show business names, and usually proprietors. In some Directories business listings are categorized by the type of business. When searching online, go to the front pages or last few pages of the directory. You can achieve this by choosing an "A" or "Z" surname, and working away from it. If you are using Ancestry.com, you will notice "hits" for an ancestor, that do not appear in the alphabetized list. This usually means that your ancestor's name will appear on that page, perhaps even as an employee not owner, of a company. In this case, you have to scan the whole page for your search name. Sometimes, if you are lucky, you will find the name of the business, next to the owner's name, in the alphabetized section. @BarbN of NYC--8/8/2008 ************** Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? When searching for a modern day union, you first need to check its history page to find out when it began. Generally, unions as we know them, did not begin until the Industrial Age brought machines in to replace the hand-skilled workers. Thus, employee safety became increasingly important. In 1870 one of my "child" ancestor's lost an arm, after he was ordered by the company owner to replace a machine's belt; there was no union to support him---there were only lawsuits to pursue. If you think of the most popular commodities of the day: tobacco, newspapers, coal and clothing production, for example, you are more apt to find unions that began earlier. Samuel Gompers was a leader in the tobacco union. As commodities increased, and purchasing power of the lower and middle classes improved, unions gained in popularity and power. Since male wage earners were more regarded than female workers, the earlier unions were more inclined to protect male related occupations. There were two major events in NYC's history that affected the formation of unions, and the insurance business. The fire at sea and sinking of the General Slocum on June 15, 1904, was NYC's greatest loss of lives in a disaster, until the World Trade Center of September 11, 2001. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of March 25, 1911, NYC's worst industrial tragedy, sparked the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (beg 1900 NYC) to revolt and draw attention to protecting female employees. @BarbN of NYC--8/8/2008 ************** Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? I must apologize for the e-mails many of you received this morning. I joined a site named Reunion.com as an avenue for my genealogy search. It was a mistake and have canceled immediately. It was not my intention to have those e-mails sent. I have used Rootsweb for some time and appreciate any help I have received. I understand that e-mails such as you received are an annoyance, I get them myself, but the nasty attitude of some who replied went quite a bit overboard. Again, I apologize. For those who understand, Thank You, for the others I pray God will soften your heart. Tom Lyons **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Read reviews on AOL Autos.
