Carol, It's possible the little boy isn't even related...it's possible his family was friends with your family members. It's possible they were neighbors. Have you tried to find them on a census? Often, if people were in financial difficulty...others tried to help them out by offering a space in a pre-owned plot. Sometimes fellow church members. Sometimes if a couple were both already deceased and there is a third space in their plot, family members will offer the extra spot because they know they aren't going to use it. I hope this helps, Joanie carol wagner wrote: >HI, I am getting all sorts of help...And I truly appreciate it. > >But I should have mentioned I did go to IGG and checked and he, Peter Zank, is not listed, there is a young boy , Peter Zanko.. >I did send for his death cert, but the boro is different. Hello: I had a similar situation with my Great Great Grandparents. There was a unknown man with a different last name buried with them. He died over 30 years after they did. I found their daughter, my Great Grandmother, on the 1930 census and noticed a neighbor of the same name along with his wife & child in the apartment next door. I concluded that 5 years after the census, when the man died, my Great Grandmother did her neighbor a favor and buried the husband in her parents' grave. Times were tough and it may have saved the widow some money. If you have already found your Uncle on a census, go back and look at his neighbors. You might identify the boy. I am new to New York research and have recently found a family that I am trying to find out more about. Constantine Phillips and his wife Emily lived in Brooklyn and I have found them on the 1880 & 1900 census. I also found Constantine living with his daughter in Camden, New Jersey in the 1930 census as a widow. What I am trying to determine is if Constantine's wife is Emily Humphry. So ideally I would like to locate a marriage record for them. Emily came to the States in 1870, she was born in 1854 in England and was in Canada by 1858. Her father had died and her mother Margaret Humphry (Jeffery) was born in Quebec City. I do not know if her mother remarried before going to N.Y. In 1932 a relative living in Chicago died and willed Constantine & Emily's daughters some money - their names were Florence Phillips and Lillian DeForest. >From what I can tell there is an index for N.Y. marriages that I could check. Is this correct? Thanks for any help or suggestions. Patricia in Alberta
HI, I am getting all sorts of help...And I truly appreciate it. But I should have mentioned I did go to IGG and checked and he, Peter Zank, is not listed, there is a young boy , Peter Zanko.. I did send for his death cert, but the boro is different. This side of the family didn't live in Manhattan. And none of the names are familiar. They are in Most Holy Trinity, and have little info as to the relationships. There is no headstone. I really appreciate all the help... --- On Wed, 8/20/08, carol wagner <cmw5551@yahoo.com> wrote: From: carol wagner <cmw5551@yahoo.com> Subject: Unknown Child To: NYBROOKLYN@rootsweb.com Date: Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 10:06 AM My GUncle died in 1916, and his wife many yars later. Try http://www.germangenealogygroup.com/ , click on databases, then Vital Statistics. See if you can locate the child in the death database. Try all of the borroughs in case it was reported incorrectly. If the child is listed, copy down the death certificate number. Once you get the death certificate number, you can order a copy of the death certificate for $4 from the LDS: Go to Family Search Library: http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp, click Place Search; enter the city and state you are searching for. Look through the listings for Vital Statistics, then Death Records. If you know the death cert # you can locate the microfilm number for that film and order the record. If you don't know the death cert # you will have to order the index for the city and year and have it sent to your local Family Search library, look the # up and then order the certificate. Also, try RAOGK to see if there is someone willing to look the info up for you; it's usually free except for copy costs: http://raogk.com/ Good luck! Hello, I don't know if this subject has been mentioned on the List recently. But, I'd like to mention the "Orphan Trains" - adding to what I just posted a minute ago in response to Liz's question about the very early 1900's. If you go to this web site, you can read about the "Orphan Trains" and find this paragraph: In 1853, Brace founded the Children's Aid Society to arrange the trips, raise the money, and obtain the legal permissions needed for relocation. Between 1854 and 1929, more than 100,000 children were sent, via orphan trains, to new homes in rural America. Recognizing the need for labor in the expanding farm country, Brace believed that farmers would welcome homeless children, take them into their homes and treat them as their own. His program would turn out to be a forerunner of modern foster care. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/orphan/ (FYI: From a book I read about homeless children in Boston, I found out that the "Orphan Trains movement" started in Boston. When NYC officials found out about it, they decided to try it there. But, Boston officials only sent their "needy children" to farms within New England.) (FYI: There were also "Orphan Trains" in Canada, also following the MA and NY events. But, the so-called orphans were part of the "British Home Children" events.) (People on the BHC List are trying to get Government officials to declare: 2009 - the Year of the British Home Child." If you count all the years when "officials" in the U.K. (the British Isles) sent their "unwanted children" out of their country, the "Child Migrant Scheme" (their term) went on for almost 400 years. If you talk about only the 1800's and 1900's, almost 200,000 children were "shipped out of the British Isles" and sent to Canada, the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, etc. - wherever there was a "British Colony.") The terms, "British Home Children" and "Home Children, Canada (Pacific)" are both searchable terms at www.google.com It is estimated that about 9 million "home children" and / or their descendants made their way down to the States in the U.S. Possibly some made their way to Brooklyn ! Just an FYI for you ! Betty (near Lowell, MA) Remember to check the archives of all the Lists and Boards for your surnames and place-names. And, please remember to check the on-line auctions for for your surnames and place-names.
Hi Liz, We were just discussing on the "British Home Children" List about all the people who died during the "1918 Flu Epidemic." If you look at this "Epidemic Timeline," you will see that the so-called "Spanish Flu" was going on at that time, as well as "Polio" (also a killer). http://hawkshome.net/misc_items/events/epidemic_timeline.htm (And World War I was going on between 1914 and 1918, and that affected many families, in many ways.) And, the "Great Depression" started in 1929, but perhaps others could discuss what was going on in Brooklyn during the 1910 to 1920 timeframe. Were there more "poor" families than there were "rich" families? * Just "food for thought." Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA) PLEASE REMEMBER THE "BRITISH HOME CHILDREN." (check out the BHC List archives) Notes: My EX's parents were born in the 1914 to 1918 timeframe, reportedly in Brooklyn. I just noticed that they were born during the WW I years. My ancestor, Jacob HUTCHINSON from near Boston, MA, had a brother and 2 married sisters move to Brooklyn during 1850's. I think they did OK as merchants, but I am curious if they continued to do OK during Civil War years and during the 1870's. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elizabeth Martinez-Gibson" <cosette.58@hotmail.com> To: <nybronx@rootsweb.com>; <nybrooklyn@rootsweb.com>; <nyc-roots@rootsweb.com>; <nykings@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 19, 2008 12:35 PM Subject: [BKLYN] (no subject) Hi Everyone, I've been trying to find my great grandfather's children in census records for 1910 and 1920. Hi Fran, Nancy Lutz has a section on the Brooklyn homepage bklyn-genealogy-info.com dedicated to certificates that do not belong to you. Why don't you contact Nancy at NancyL916@aol.com and ask her if she would accept them scanned or typewritten, and report back to the list. It would really help all of us. Liz, A good starting point when looking for orphans, might be: http://www.kesh.com/hnoh/welcome.html I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. L'Shannah Tovah* & Happy 5769, Walter Greenspan Great Falls, MT & Jericho, NY * L'Shannah Tovah (li-SHAH-nuh TOH-vuh; li-shah-NAH toh-VAH) Hebrew. Lit. for a good year. The common greeting during Rosh ha Shannah and the Days of Awe. This is a shortening of "L'Shannah tovah tikatev v'taihatem" (or, to women, "L'Shannah tovah tikatevi v'taihatemi"), which means, "May you be inscribed and sealed for a good year." Hi Ah yes, the Sea Beach Line. The city confiscated some land from my Gf who owned a big farm in the Brooklyn area near 10/11 Avenue. I have a photo of some of my maternal family sitting on the ground watching the workers laying the tracks just south of their home on 61 Street. I used to also take the Sea Beach line to 34 Street, walk to GC, and thru a pedestrian tunnel to GCS. One time someone showed me an interesting phenomena. At one of the pedestrian "crossroads" there is an arched ceiling. If one stood in one corner and wispered something, a person diametrically opposite could hear them with great clarity! I also remember getting off the SB at 34 street and walking to the "8th Avenue INDEPENDENT subway line", later incorporated in th City Lines. Hope it helps. ken **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Read reviews on AOL Autos.
