Hey Listers---Are there Brooklyn Directories published for the 1920's; 30's; 40's; 50's? Available at the Main Brooklyn Library? Any where else? My tree is on ancestry.com but I had to upload it. I don't know how it could get onto any site unless you uploaded it or someone who had access to your computer uploaded it. Did you upload it to any site at all including genealogy.com? Did you send your tree to someone who might have uploaded it? There is no way it could have appeared that I know of that a tree could appear.? They can't get into your computer. Does anyone else know? I have found a great number of relatives by uploading my tree, adding hundreds of names to my tree. Please let me know. Thanks for your response Joyce and your concern that it sounds strange. But have you ever tried to contact ancestry.com by phone? Nearly impossible. You are lucky to even find a phone number and then have any one answer at that number?..or if they do, to help you? Doesn't happen. Nope, the route I went via "One World Trees" for my ancestor listed after a search.... Entries: nothing, Updated: nothing and under Contact: UNKNOWN. No contact info or contributors listed. I'm still waiting to hear from anyone who knows what "The information listed below has been submitted by the Ancestry Community" actually means". How can something be contributed by the "Ancestry Community"? What is that? I thought info was contributed by actual individuals at their discretion and permission? Hi List, Then how do explain that I never ever put my family tree on ANY website, ever. So how does one explain the fact that there are parts of my family tree on Ancestry, that include facts that no one else has but me? As an example, I went to a family member listed under One World Tree and it says this " The information listed below has been submitted by the Ancestry community." That's my first question....what exactly does that mean?? Does anyone know? Further, on that page I click on "user submitted trees" and then click on my ancestors name from there and I get the info, but under Entries: nothing, Updated: nothing and under Contact: UNKNOWN. Usually, under normal submitted trees by REAL people, there is information listed under each category, including contact info. I do use Ancestry's genealogy software, so I feel like somehow they are getting my information. Call me crazy, but I agree with others that something might not possibly be above board here. I pay a great deal with my measly salary to have full access to ancestry's data. I repeat, I pay for that access. I don't need to find they are taking info from my use of their software or my message board postings or searches what have you....and putting things online I've not placed there. I hope I am wrong, but I do think they have their ways. I am a very private person...I'm selective about my information and I don't like being used. I hope that is not the case, but I do find it suspect. Luana Bbokken@aol.com wrote: > The answer is: that no matter where you put your family tree they > wind up on three different places. That's the point, the interment list does state a place of birth, although that may mean "U.S." or "NY", or "Ireland." The staff informed me that information comes from the undertaker. I'msorry that you misreadmy post. I was surpirsed today when I learned that Calvary Cemetery's prices for interment lists increased since I last ordered any. The charge is $60. for the first name, and $5. each for each additional name. Some of those big Irish families have ten in one grave. So, folks if you plan to purchase any, the Archdiocese of New York may raises prices again, any time. In my research, interment lists are invaluable. There is no equivalent. They provide the deceased's name, date of burial, and place of birth. Often an unfamiliar name will guide you to other family surnames. At smaller cemeteries you may acquire the cause of death, parents'names, name of purchaser, and even family addresses. Especially for those who live out of the NYC metro area, let me clarify that Calvary Cemetery is called "the largest in the USA," but I'm unsure if that refers to the acreage or the fact that 5 million people were buried there. Five million! They may have a dozen funerals schedule for one morning. Perhaps if family researchers understand this, you'll be more patient and understanding of this very busy staff. Calvary is also a complex cemetery to navigate. Some major thouroughfares dissect the grounds, and make traveling by car necessary to traverse from one section to another. For more information about Calvary Cemetery, this is a helpful article: http://www.ancestry.com/learn/library/article.aspx?article=554 Remember, Calvary Cemetery records are searched with an exact death date. That is how their filing system is arranged, and all look ups are manually executed, often requiring researching 2- 4 different sources. I hope this is helpful, because it is one unique place. @MizScarlettNY:9.4.08 ************** It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. Find your travel deal here. I am looking for any information about a family named Gienau. Some have lived in Brooklyn and some in Queens. Mostly Queens. Would appreciate any help. Obits are only available from the NY Times or in your case the Brooklyn Public Library as the papers for Brooklyn are not on line. I'm interested in finding an obituary (if there is one) for a Larry Rodie, who died in Brooklyn on 15 Aug 1992, per the SSDI. I'm in California, however, so looking is a bit of a challenge. Suggestions? Tina P.S. -- A death certificate would also be great, but I think New York doesn't issue informational copies. Right? ************** It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. Hi everyone - can anyone tell me if they have ever gotten a death certificate from the 1880's? I just sent for one and was wondering exactly what information may be on it. I am especially interested to know if the deceased person's parents are listed. Since I have never seen one that old I do not know what the form looks like or what they ask. On a side note - I think that these lists ( Brooklyn & Queens) are the most helpful, friendly and knowledgable of all the lists I subscribe to. Looking forward to hearing from someone out there. Liz In your earlier request, you cited West Broadway. I was confused because it runs north and south. Now that you say South Broadway, it makes sense and yes, it is not far from Marie St. Would you like pictures if they still exist? Do you know which cemetery your relatives are in? It would be really wonderful to have some early births on Ancestry, before the 1880 census enumerated women and children by name. Go to www.familysearch.org , on the right hand side you will see the word FORMS, just click on that. You will also have to include the film number on the form , you can get that also from LDS Hi, I have located the marriage record for Arthur DeForest and Lillian Phillips which took place in Kings Co., Oct. 14, 1903 #7236. This is from one of the indexes on-line. What I would like is the full marriage record. I believe I can order this from the LDS library, does anyone know how I do that. Actually Vivian, anyone who I've invited to my tree can see the pictures just fine. I know I've marked that living people are not to be seen, but I assumed that meant that those gone would be! I'll have to get in touch with Ancestry, in the meantime, I'll just play around with it and maybe stumble on the answer. Thanks to everyone who offered advice! Hi... This morning Ancestry asked me to fill out a survey. One of the questions asked was what I would like to see in the future. The most important thing to me is having as many historical documents, (census records, vital records, directories etc.) as possible. Which brings me to a big WISH! Does anyone know if any of the genealogical organizations are working to put the NY State Census 1875 online? I would especially love to see Brooklyn information added. I know that the NYG and B had some sort of system/index to help locate ancestors in this census for research requests. Now, I guess we will have to wait and see what will be available in months to come. I still have ancestors that are "lost" in NY. Bev W ************** It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. I have put my tree onto Ancestry (privitized so no current info is shown). I have many many pictures and documents in my tree (familytreemaker 2008).? For them to show up on Ancestry I had to upload them separately.?? I have only uploaded about 20 out of 100's.????
