I was not an enthusiastic student of history. Thirty years of genealogical research brought me to history, to see the wider vision, to understand how one event impacts another, to see the whole picture. Within the framework of genealogy is proving origins and their historical relevancy. Fact: The event on September 11, 2001, in lower Manhattan, was a manmade disaster. It was the worst disaster in NYC history since the sinking of the General Slocum in the East River. Families and their descendants were violated. Fact: NYC fireman, police, and professional civil employees reacted in emergency mode, selflessly responding. Fact: NYC firemen positioned the flag of the United States of America, at the site. Succinctly, the flying of the red, white, and blue was a statement to the world, that this is our land. It was an act of patriotism, unity, and custom. For those who view the flying of our country's flag tomorrow merely as political statement, you've missed the connection to history and genealogy. Hi Judy, I am writing to you in full view of the entire list. I want you to know up front that what I say is strictly and I mean this sincerely strictly MY OPINION. I have been on many lists since the inception of Roots Web many years ago. I have been "doing" Genealogy searches here in the USA, the UK, Norway & Sweden and South Africa and Germany. The premise is on each list, Genealogy and the list owners stress this along very strongly with no flaming. If you don't have these rules it goes to just a chitty chat list. No one wants this as there are hundreds of mailing listS for just these things. So we all usually go along to get along. BUT, Sometimes emotions are involved and in this case a very strong emotion, one that has transcended all the decorum we expect to find. 9-11 shattered our world, so terribly that no one will ever be the same for it. So, in our pain we reach out on the anniversary of this horrific tragedy , to each other, to remind us one and all that we should never forget. We beat the drums of our patriotism loud and for all to hear and respond to. No other single act of war has been able to do this to our spirit. Well... maybe Pearl Harbor. I ask you in the spirit of the love of our country and our fellow man to put aside your aversion to what you are seeing on the list for a few days and let us come together in the spirit of love, friendship and genealogy to bask in each other's love of country and recall the lives lost of many of our listers. THE PROGRAM: On Thursday, September 11th, 2008, display an American flag outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States . Every individual can make it their duty to display an American flag on this seventh anniversary of our country's worst travesty. This is a gesture of unity to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends, and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who are fighting to preserve our cherished freedoms. In the days, weeks and months following 9/11, our country was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned the incredible losses and stood shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism. Sadly, those flags have all but disappeared. Our patriotism pulled us through some tough times and it shouldn't take another attack to galvanize us in solidarity. Our American flag represents our country. Together we can prevail over terrorism of all kinds Take a moment to think back to how you felt on 9/11 and let those sentiments guide you. Some folks are choosing to drive with their car lights on. Others will wear red, white, and blue as statements of unity. I have death certificates where the name is misspelled to be unrecognizable. Unless the person at the MA did a search of the actual certificates and not Just the indexes for the entire month and year and into the next month of death than you cannot say the search has been exhausted for NYC. Family has the exact Bronx address. -------------- Having recently been through this very type of conundrum, I can say: Newspaper obits sometimes state "died at home" when that wasn't literally true. When I was researching Frederick Jacobs who died "at home" in Brooklyn (1902), there was no NYC Death Cert found. But when I visited the cemetery (in Bklyn), it said he was buried "from Vailsburg, NJ." He was ill with TB and had gone to live with his son in NJ. And that's where I finally found the DC. It may even be a 'Body in Transit' Document. So try to learn more about the possible cause of death, and even all/many family members nearby (over the state border). If the person was ill in their last weeks or months, they could just have moved in with them. Hello, This was discussed on another List a few weeks ago. Since I belong to about 100 Lists, I don't remember which one, and I need to be vague in my response. But, the gist of what was discussed is that you can call a woman in your home "a mother-in-law" even if she isn't. In general, you need to remember that, when people are chatting with the Census taker, they can tell the Census taker anything they want.
