I do think this is appropiate on this site. We study and discuss NY Genealogy and NY history here. 911 is part of that history for not only NY but for the nation. The list reminds us to fly our flags on Veterans Day, the Fourth of July, and Memorial Day in honor and memory, this is no different. It is to honor those who went before us which is a lot of what genealogy is all about. Please join us in this FLY THE FLAG campaign and forward this to your address book friends, asking them to pass it on. THE PROGRAM: On Thursday, September 11th, 2008, display an American flag outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States . Every individual can make it their duty to display an American flag on this seventh anniversary of our country's worst travesty. This is a gesture of unity to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends, and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who are fighting to preserve our cherished freedoms. In the days, weeks and months following 9/11, our country was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned the incredible losses and stood shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism. Sadly, those flags have all but disappeared. Our patriotism pulled us through some tough times and it shouldn't take another attack to galvanize us in solidarity. Our American flag represents our country. Together we can prevail over terrorism of all kinds Take a moment to think back to how you felt on 9/11 and let those sentiments guide you. Some folks are choosing to drive with their car lights on. Others will wear red, white, and blue as statements of unity. Dear Listers; Today is one of the saddest days in the HISTORY of not only the United States but the world. As was any of the wars our ancestors, fathers, brothers uncles, cousins, etc, have fought and died for, the only difference is WE have experienced this horrific history through our own eyes, ears and most importantly, our hearts first hands. As we pay tribute on Veterans Day, Memorial Day, VD Day, we pay tribute now to the events of September 11. You must remember, this is a tragedy that is being focused on in schools, across our town halls and parks across not only our great nation BUT the world nations themselves. We live history on these lists, we search our past, combing through time for events of the past, so we may connect to our lives, our children's future. The past doesn't need to be a hundred years old. Yesterday was the past, last night was the past, the moment this letter is sent it is in the past..It is history, it is a memory in the winds of time. This is not political, this is REMEMBERANCE. There are families grieving this morning who lost family members and friends..I for one am one of them..and I'll be damned if I let anyone take away the tribute to these innocent men, women and children whose lives were sacrificed in the name of a religious faction. As I asked you to fly a flag on July 4th, or visit a veteran's grave, I will ask you today to take those moments of silence , no matter where you are, and remember those whose lives were lost. As with WW2, we must never forget. We need to learn from these tragedies, we need to stand as a whole, not only as a nation, but as a people, as part of the human race. We can only make change, when we remember the pain of the past. Nancy **************Psssst...Have you heard the news? I received the following email from a veteran who I regard as a true patriot and retired Marine. He and his brothers were raised in a Rockland County, NY orphange, and all five served in the armed forces. One, never returned. Gerry informed me that only the President of the U.S. has the authority to proclaim when the flag is to be flown at half mast. The following link states: "By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the Congress has designated September 11 of each year as "Patriot Day...that the flag be flown at half-staff on Patriot Day." http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/proclamations/ Thank you Gerry for sharing this. Subj: Re: [BKLYN] Non-genealogy posts - are they allowed on the NYBrooklyn list? Date: 9/10/2008 10:03:21 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: john.dvorak@sbcglobal.net I wanted to say something here. Genealogy is history. What happened on 9/11/2001 IS ALSO history. Thusly we should not ban people from memorializing those who died on 9/11/2001 because of the fact it IS history just as Genealogy is. 9/11 killed the souls of many Americans who still live today with that memory burned in their mind and IT WONT GO AWAY, so let us be at peace with one another this month. Subj: Re: flag Date: 9/10/2008 7:59:46 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: birdsanct@optonline.net Good for you, I am sure many have forgotten that tragic day. My son-in-law was a NYC fire dept. member. Although stationed in Flatbush he was there many days on search and rescue then search and recover. He told me some horror stories. So sad. I was living in VS at that time and they closed Sunrise Highway west. I was home that day and happened to have the TV on and saw what happened. I will never forget. My poor son-in-law still has nightmares. He lost his old Captain and many men than transferred to NYC. We knew many that lost their lives or relatives of those that are gone. My flag will fly high tomorrow. Arden LI, NY The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time ************** Psssst...Have you heard the news? My flag flies every day. Tomorrow, it will fly at half staff and I will wear red, white and blue and a very patriotic bracelet and I will pray for our country and our military before I sleep tonight as I do every night. I sent an email to my entire office building today, reminding them of tomorrow's date, "in the event anyone intended to commemmorate in their own way tomorrow and had grown so busy they'd forgotten what date it is". I would hope that someone would've reminded me if I were so busy I was unaware of the date. It's that important to me. It occurs to me that I might also pray for anyone who needs to push the horrible memories of 9/11 away and make tomorrow a day like any other day. God Bless us...every one. Joanie
